If we can't fuck around in other people's business, what's the point of being American?

Seriously, if we spent half the time, energy and money trying to help people that we do telling them how to run shit and trying to blow their asses apart, things would be going a lot better and people might not be so fuck*ng pissed off at us all the time.

Also, do some people really think that "ambivalent" means "indifferent"? Because if so, I am going to pushed over the edge into being one of those crazy people who rail against the unstoppable changes in the language.

STEP AWAY FROM THE LEDGE.

I think that it's one of those words that people don't use incorrectly as much as don't understand it when they come across it. It doesn't seem to get used all that often by people who don't know what it means, at least from my observation.

Not like "begging the question," which I'm convinced is understood by only a handful of people, but gets used all the time. Though I'll forgive Tom Waits for "the question begs the answer," even though it plays off the incorrect use of the term. But there isn't much for which I wouldn't forgive Tom Waits.

Also, I hate it when people correct me when I say "he hanged himself" or tell me that I mispronounce Nietzsche.

I'm hearing more and more that "begs the question" is so prevalent in its incorrect usage that the new usage is now considered acceptable as a bit of descriptive grammar. I'm not really comfortable with that, and I'm pretty much a descriptivist.

My main problem with that is that there are other phrases, like "raises the question" or "prompts the question," that work so much better. "Begs the question" is awkward and doesn't really make sense when used in that way. I think it mainly bugs me because, much like irregardless, I think its misuse comes from people trying to sound smarter. I hear it on NPR all the time.

I'm with you on that. I'm with you on the whole "begs the question" subject. I guess it's strange that I would have much of a problem with this, considering I could not care any less whether "ain't" is acceptable usage (well, except for wondering what "ai not" means).

It didn't completely swap until the second page - I'd say that's progress.

Yeah, communication at about 2800 feet per second.

a FB friend made posted a status update about culling her friend-list and wishing there was a 'delete friend' button in real life.  i replied that the trigger of a gun is that thing.

Guy I supervise up here (not a FB friend) posted that he wanted to go into the street with his shotgun and execute every liberal he saw. That makes it fun to work with him.

I am far more worried about something like this, on a day-to-day basis, than I am about an al Qaeda-sponsored international terrorist attack.
