Broadly, very broadly, teams don't get to choose who they play.

It is funny, though, that Georgia sucks when they're on BSU's schedule but they are really good when any other SEC team has to play them (and you can sub in anyone you want for Georgia/BSU in this sentence).

Georgia is the only team in the SEC I like, because a friend played for them years ago.

Dang it. Looking like a LSU/Bama title game. I'd actually be for LSU, even though they beat us. They are just a fuck*ng spectacular team this year, and I don't hate their coach. Also, there's a guy at work who is an Alabama fan, and he's a douche.

Yeah, pretty much all out of conference games are either schedule padding or the occasional high-profit out of conference rivalry-type game.

The only reason for a BCS-league team to schedule an out-of-conference game that they could actually lose is because they could make a boatload of money.

A team like Houston has no opportunity to get a "championship-level schedule" and even a team like Boise has to win for years and years straight to even begin to get a chance to, only if they've been successful for so long that a team from another conference things they can make so much money off the game that the risk of losing is justified.

Major college sports, basketball and football, have become weird byzantine profit structures hidden behind the mythology of amateurism and basically need to be burnt down to be saved.

The thing is that those teams don't need any money, and all non-BCS teams that play OOC games against BCS teams actually are the ones getting paid. I'll confess I don't really know which direction the money goes when an LSU plays an Oregon.

A team like Houston has no opportunity to get a "championship-level schedule"

Houston is in a tough position.  The only chance they have at winning the championship is if they play the schools that are perceived as top tier programs, but since they have been winning a lot the last couple of years none of those perceived top schools are gonna schedule them and risk a loss.

Everybody down here is bemoaning the end of the Texas A&M - UT rivalry.  But there is no reason for that rivalry to end except that neither program is going to put a tough team like A&M or Texas on their schedule  if they don't have too.  So basically the rivalry goes away so A&M can pad their won loss record by beating up on North Texas State or Abilene Christian or whoever they pay to take the fall.

As for as the UT - A&M thing, there's a guy up here who is hit pretty hard by it, but I can't give a fuck.

In terms of the Houston thing, tell me all about it. The teams can't just schedule a top-tier team, they basically have to have all of their out-of0conference games be AQ conference schools. They don't necessarily have to be ranked, but every other game has to come from Pac-12, SEC, etc or no love. It's hard enough to schedule two of those a year. And of course, even if that non-AQ team beats those other 5 teams (shall we say Georgia, VaTech, Arizona State, UCLA, and Baylor), those are teams that still recruit better than a Houston or BSU does, so the team is going to get beat up and will probably lose a couple in conference, and the point will be moot because you'll be looking at the Frankenberry Bowl. BSU is 10-1 and the winningest team in the FBS over the last 7 years, and since they lost to TCU (unbeaten in conference) they aren't eligible for a BCS game, not by a long shot. It's hard to think a team from the Big East deserves a shot over BSU.

I am so fuck*ng pissed that UCLA didn't even bother to show up last night against USC. Now for the next year, all we're gonna hear from USC fans is that they beat the best team in the Pac-12 (there is no doubt that Oregon is better than USC, last Saturday was an off night--it would sort of be like arguing that Nevada was better than Boise State last year), narrowly lost to the second best and crushed the Pac-12 South champs. If UCLA could have pulled off an upset, they would have been the champs even had USC been eligible, but if they would have at least just made a game of it...

I guess they literally had nothing to play for. They knew going in that they'd be playing Oregon in Eugene and couldn't risk many injuries, but USC wanted to show the world who the true Pac-12 South champs are.

And it's right, they are. I'd love another shot at them next week. I think the NCAA is corrupt and I think this post-season prohibition is bullshit. The people hurt worst are those who had little to nothing to do with the scandal, which probably could have been prevented anyway if it weren't for the NCAA with their bullshit rules and selective enforcement and misguided punishment.

Major college sports, basketball and football, have become weird byzantine profit structures hidden behind the mythology of amateurism and basically need to be burnt down to be saved.

Exactly. Take someone like Reggie Bush. A tremendously talented athlete and he's treated like a celebrity and makes a lot of people a lot of money in ticket sales and merchandising, and he can't be compensated beyond tuition and a few hundred dollars for food and rent? Bullshit. I almost think that college football is more tightly and chaotically regulated than the securities industry.

Also annoyed that Stanford has a better overall record than Oregon, though it's better for us all around that they won. Unless some crazy shit goes down and they end up in the title game... I would be very upset. But the only ranked non-conference team they played was Notre Dame last night and, well, they're not ranked anymore.

Georgia just kicked a field goal on their first drive and then recovered an onside kick. Why am I not watching this game?

What happens of Georgia beats LSU? BSU going in is at 7, and they beat Georgia, but they didn't win their conference. I'm sure the powers that be in their infinite wisdom will make the right decision. I'll leave it in their capable hands.
