Bon Appetit (Free back issues up for grabs)
« on: May 22, 2012, 04:16:34 pm »

Ladies and gents, I have about 100 back issues of Bon Appetit from 2001 - 2008 that I have been hoarding jealously for years. I am going through them and putting them into digital storage (via Epicurious.com, which is much simpler than trying to retype them all) and I am going to give them up, but...it's hard. This collection has been one of my prized possessions for years, but they are not getting used and I really need to reclaim the space.

So, friends, I'm giving them away. To you, my foodie amigos, because I know you will appreciate them. Carlos has already asked for two issues to complete his collection, but that leaves a huge stack of beautifully photographed food-porn mags just begging for a good home. Who wants some? I have eight each of the Thanksgiving, Grilling, and Travel issues, plus a bunch of annual food survey issues and more regional-themed issues than I can count. So if you have a particular interest, let me know in this thread (and PM me your address if you weren't on the Christmas exchange last year) and I'll be happy to send a magazine or two zipping your way, gratis.

They really are chock-full of fantastic, inspiring recipes -- especially the older editions, which were fatter and had fewer ads. So far I have been through seven magazines and I have digitally archived 61 recipes. And if you want the whole collection, well...you can have it for the cost of postage. As long as you promise...to love them as I have.

I have BA from January 1996 to present. Every year or two when it comes up for renewal I'm like "Do I really want to keep getting this?... meh, it's $12 per year, screw it." But it is my primary source for scaring up recipes and such. Some good travel advice, too.

It's up there, yeah. Mostly for the gorgeous photography, IMHO.

I'm keeping my Cooks' Illustrated, tho. Not nearly as many issues, but no ads, just really solid technique tutorials.

BA and Gourmet have both been around for a long time, but with the collapse of magazines alongside newspapers, Conde Nast decided they didn't need multiple cooking titles and Gourmet got the axe.

I personally think Saveur is a better magazine right now, in terms of going a little farther afield to find new and different things to cook (if that's what you're looking for). BA's travel issue keeps going back to safe places--Paris, Italy, etc. The latest Saveur had an article on Senegal.

BTW, a really good blog for cooking in general, and if you're into cooking magazines, is The Bitten Word (thebittenword.com). They get every cooking magazine known to humankind, cook at least one recipe out of every issue each month, and blog about the outcome. And they take good photos.

Mkay, if nobody's interested I'ma try to eBay these sumbitches. Looks like some of the older ones go for three to seven bucks a pop, plus postage.

Which ones did you want, Carlos?
