Thoughts on the Superbowl
« on: February 03, 2014, 06:01:56 am »

I think they need to get rid of the numbers. Who cares what number it is.

The game was terrible. That's obvious. I don't know what the hell happened. I know that Seattle has a great defense, but they made Denver's offense look like a bunch of rookies.

Loved the halftime show. Thought Bruno brought it. Really dig all of the lights and explosions and shit.

Learned during the pregame that both Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry were assistant coaches with the NY Giants in the late 50s. They won the Championship together in '56. That kinda blows my mind.

Seems like another NFC West team gave the Broncos a hard time about 24 years ago.  Agreed though - that was like a JV/Varsity scrimmage.  Even if the Broncos were going to lose, I wanted/expected Peyton to make some amazing reads, plays and passes.  Instead it looked like the Seahawks snookered him, tricking him into at best throwing to a guy who was in the path of a linebacker or safety and getting pummeled in the next half second.

Yeah, disappointing for sure. I didn't have a preferred team going in, but it wasn't long before I was howling "nooooooooooo!" every time the Seahawks had a big play, just because I didn't want it to be a blowout.

The crowd was surprisingly loud for a Super Bowl--it's usually so many corporate people, and those with more money than sense, so not many actual fans. I wonder to what extent Peyton's "OMAHA!"-ing and such was disrupted by the crowd noise. Certainly looked like it on the safety.

Speaking of which, I believe "first score is a Seahawks safety" was paying 400-1. Imagine raking in $8K on a $20 bet on the first play from scrimmage.

Petey Carroll set up the SeaChickens exactly the way he should have, right in line with his philosophy, for the game and it paid off big time.

What they did, was they treated the game like a game. They'd been doing their thing all year long and it had got them to the big one, so what they did was obviously plenty good enough. So instead of adding more and more to their game plan, they streamlined things, they came and played as who they already were.

That's why the SeaCocks were playing smooth and liquid and fast as all fuck while the Geldings were disjointed and *****ic. One was thinking way too fuck*ng hard while the other was operating at the speed of instinct and muscle memory. One could see it and be it while the other had to process a bunch of shit before hitting the go go button.

When you have to think it out while somebody else is hitting you in the mouth with a helmet is makes for a long shitty day.

Bruno Mars reminded me of a James Brown 1964 Review-Lite. Nothing wrong with following the Godfather's footsteps, but on the SB Halftime stage it was a shoulder shrug for me.

I didn't think the announcers had a very good day. There where too many moments when one of them could have had a take and not sucked and they passed it up for vanilla. For example, Carroll challenged a spot on a Russel Wilson dive for the marker early in the game because the officials marked it a yard short. The replays where really good, you could see that dude had put the ball right on the marker before any other part of him had touched ground. When the officials didn't over rule the bad spot, Buck and Aikman kinda weinied around it and didn't really point out what was, at the time, a big deal.

John Madden had his faults, but he would have ruptured a piece of small intestine over that and made it fun and interesting while doing so.

Fuck all y'all Seahawks haters. If y'all don't like us, blow us.

Kidding. Though a lifetime as a Seattle sports fan has molded me into a very gracious loser, I am a terrible winner.

Since Ash played D-line, he knows of what he speaks - and that was all praise.

I drank Rolling Rock. If there's ever a time for shitty American beer, it's the Super Bowl. Goes well with chili and wings, and the missus likes it.

I drank water mostly. My brother in law made me a root beer float at one point.

My host made pozole, and provided Stellas.  Beyond that, a lot of people contributed a sixer of beer, so there was a hodgepodge to choose from.  I had 3 Stellas, a Sierra Nevada, 3 more brews of uncertain heritage (didn't really look at the labels) and whatever it is that Costco contracts out to put in their Kirkland Amber Ale (sweet for my preference, but not terrible).

champagne

of beers

yes friends i once again indulged in that most american of pastimes, the cheapest beer in the biggest can, accompanied with chili and shouting at a screen. i rooted against seattle because i dislike a guy who ferociously adores them. he's straight but would suck off russell wilson if requested, he's that into the team. it's super-offputting, and he's been unbearable on other websites since the game started. i have blocked his posts, but he responded to an unrelated thread about poker with "Go Hawks!!!" as if there isn't an actual atlanta sports team called the hawks (they play basketball).

i really wish he would move.
