Well, shit. Didn't get that job. Now a little worried that I have nothing lined up for the summer.

That sucks, inev. Hope you get something even better. Their loss, anyhow.

I got my first paycheck today. One hundred and three smackaroonies. Not much, but it'll more than cover the amount I expect to spend in my own damn store this month, so that's something.

My kids are off school for three weeks starting next Wednesday and I'm stocking up on stuff to keep them busy so I don't strangle them. I justify this to myself by looking back at how much I spent on Mama School last time they were tracked out, before I had a 30% employee discount on everything.

Someday I will get a job where I can just make money and not spend it on the things I'm supposed to be getting other people to buy.

Gave up on getting anything done at 5, took the train in and met some friends visiting NYC from St Louis. Ate a delicious home-cooked meal, drank beer, then took the train home to Jersey. The lady who cooked was very good at cooking, and her boyfriend had a great record collection that he wanted to talk about. Life is good.

This all came because I called my mom to complain about all the work I had to do, and she told me to shut up and take the day off. In nicer words. She was right, I feel way better now.

Turned in my last assignment of the year. Suddenly all the dumb shit I wanted to do instead of working for the past couple of months doesn't sound that appealing. So I cleaned the kitchen floor at midnight. It didn't really get any cleaner-- there are still discolored pathways where we tend to walk. I used 1/2 cup ammonia to a half bucket of water, maybe I just didn't scrub hard enough?

Lately I have been playing SNES games on my computer, do you guys have any suggestions? Just finished Chrono Trigger, starting A Link to the Past. FFIII and Earthbound are on the list.

Tomorrow: summer job search hardcore mode.

Going totally stir-crazy. There is only so much time I can fill with reading and cleaning. I am trying to think of this as a good mental habit, the need to be working on something. Much better than my usual fear that I am a fundamentally lazy person. Strange how a week ago all I wanted was a full day to relax, and now all I want is something productive to do. This too shall pass.

One internship is finally being really good about communicating with me, and of COURSE it's my last choice of last choices. Unpaid, doing land use research (which I know almost nothing about), with a commute to the city. A friend of mine from college works in this office, but I am torn about whether to let him know I am coming in for an interview, since I would definitely take any other job over this one. Although it certainly sounds prestigious, in the way that city government bodies sound fancy to me and possibly only me.

I guess it would be ridiculous to suggest that maybe you should go to a doctor?

Talked to a classmate at the graduation BBQ yesterday who said he might be able to get me a job working with him if I don't find anything soon. Torn between just jumping on it as a semi-sure thing and the fear that I'm pigeonholing myself as an academic/research guy. It's a vicious cycle where I don't have any concrete planning experience, so I only get interviews for research positions, so I only have research experience, etc. This would be doing something pretty completely un-related to any of my planning interests (researching access to healthy food in poor neighborhoods of New Jersey), but it would pay really well and only be a 10 minute walk from home. Definitely better than working at the bagel place.

That sounds like an interesting subject, it's in your field, and it pays well and is a ten minute walk commute? I'm really not seeing the problem here.

It is nominally in my field, but I am not really interested in food access stuff. It is also not something where I will meet anyone who could give me a job-- I would be sitting at school on a computer all summer. So it's better than doing nothing or something entirely outside my field, but majorly inferior to even an unpaid position where I would actually be working on building/development projects, meeting people who work in the field, etc.

I guess it's a question of whether you need the money to eat or whether the money would just be nice.

I don't think I'll ever get used to the idea of living in a world where it's hard to get a job that doesn't pay you anything.

Tomorrow I'm gonna meet a pug that I might adopt.

I'm kind of anxious. I really want a pug right now. Don't tell Rose, but it's really boring to have only one elderly blind pug.  I already applied for another really cute brindle pug mix from another rescue and they dropped the ball on the paperwork and by the time I called to follow up someone else had adopted it. So I hope I don't make the mistake of taking any old pug that seems OK.

The thing that seems cosmic though is - this pug's foster person is the same woman I got Rose from. This is highly statistically unlikely given that this rescue places over 400 dogs per year, so they must have a LOT of foster homes.

Oh, and the Tech Staff is not here to help decide. He's on a trip to Italy. He told everyone he was going to come home to a strange pug, I think he likes the idea of doing it that way.

You know I'm not sure if Rose wants a new sister - she's the one who liked to cuddle but she seems to be doing fine as an only pug. I'll remember to mention to her that she would have someone to shoulder part of the burden of photography.
