Man, that little tidbit as a footnote? I'd say this event left a decent mark on your psyche...as it should. That's devastating to hear even as a historical reference. Sorry, man...Sorry.

I used to have flying dreams, all the time. As in every few nights. They were the best, man, the best. They actually started out as "leaping" dreams - have you seen that "Island Hopping" commercial, where the guy's just jumping from one island to the next? Sort of like that, except never amongst islands. I would just discover that whenever I want to, I have that power in my dreams. Then, instead of allowing myself to fall during one leap, I just decided to kind of swim through the air -- it worked, by jove!

Then I met my wife and got married, and I've been so happy while awake I haven't had to resort to dream-world happiness any more.

CortJstr's post reminds me of another type of anxiety dream I have that involves technology -  I'm trying to dial a phone number and I try again and again and can't do it correctly.  And when I was younger I used to have dreams where something like the TV wouldn't turn off no matter how hard I tried, and this was always very frightening in a Twilight Zone kind of way.

That's exactly what mine are like. Except I can't remember phone numbers ever so I try to look them up in the caller ID archive or in my cell phone. Except since you supposedly can't read in dreams there's always somebody's ear grease on the screen. After several minutes of frustration and mis-dials is when the unable to read thing dawns on me.

You can't read in dreams? I actually was gunned down and died in a dream once.

OK, I have two current recurring dreams, neither of which I have seen in awhile. When I am up against any kind of deadline, I get the classic school dream: I have to go back to High School and take a calculus test. Except it's been almost 20 years now, so it's a struggle.

The other happens every know and then (and I've heard that OTHER people have this dream, which is weird): I take out my contact lens and I squirt it with the cleaning stuff, but as I rub it it gets bigger. And bigger. Eventually I am holding it like a pizza dough and I put it over my bent knee, and I'm squiting it and scrubbing it like a madman.

OMG I don't have quite that dream exactly, but I do have dreams where my contact lens is really huge and I can't get it in my eye.  Often part of that same dream where I'm trying to get ready for work in a strange bathroom.

Is it true that most people can't read in dreams?  I'm sure I can read the numbers on the phone buttons in those phone dreams.  And I am pretty sure i have had reading-the-messageboard dreams.  I'll have to pay more attention.

I heard someplace you can't read in dreams because dreaming isn't really a left-brain type of thing. Of course I think I may have "learned" this factoid from Batman: TAS.

I know I frequently can't read important notes or numbers. Using the phone in a dream is more likey typing since I just know where the numbers are. I'm pretty sure the keys are actually blank in my dream.

Although I also frequently dream my vision is really blurry because my glasses are missing or covered in film or something. So it's not just you contacts people.

WEIRD! Anyone else have experience with dreams about vision correction?

Fantasies about mounting Velma while she's on her hands and knees looking for her glasses (it's the skirt) don't count.

I have sex dreams just about every night.  Sometimes I'll dream about women I've actually had sex with, sometimes about women I just want to have sex with, and sometimes I wake up and go "Ewww..."

My other recurring dream is more involved and too disturbing to publish on the internet.

But it's fun to hear people's interpretations of what sex dreams mean.  I've heard completely conflicting interpretations, thus contributing to my belief that generic dream interpretation is bogus in the extreme.

Hmm, things brought up by all the recent posts:

Firstly, I find it interesting that my dreams never seem to catch up with my real life. I will dream about recent things, say when I was playing a WWII flight sim, I had a dream about being at school but at war, with all these enemies dropping down on parachutes and having to fight, though my gun jammed and I had to hide behind the neighbours greenhouse. But, this all took place at the school that I was at eleven+ years ago. Even if I dream about people I know now, they will tend to be put into a place I haven't been in a long time.

As far as the vision stuff goes, it's kind of hard to tell with me, since I have had many sleep related problems. I used to sleep walk terribly. My brother's favourite story of me as a very young child, was when I walked through the living room one night, completely oblivious to any reaction from my family, continues to the kitchen, opened the drinks cupboard and peed in it. All completely unconscious. I spent many years sleepwalking a lot, but then also had problems like sleep paralysis, where you wake up and can't move or speak. This was probably the most terrifying thing for me.
I also went through a period of sleeping with my eyes open, which tended to cause people to assume I had just died, and consequently woke me up freaking out. Which was a good thing cos my eyeballs got kinda dry.
I still have very odd dreams, most of which never make much sense, and will blend many different places and people together, often including things like hedgehogs walking through little cat flaps in queues.
Also though, as I say, it tends to be about women, and I always wake up somewhat depressed by them. Damn my pysche.

I used to also have sleep paralysis. That's a bitch and a half. I think everyone has had this, it's also called night terrors and some southern friends used to refer to it as "the witch riding you" which was eerie also.

For those confused by this: your brain secretes a chemical that basically paralyzes when you are in deep sleep. This keeps you from acting out your dreams, which apparently our friend Slink had problems with as a young'un. Occasionally you reach consciousness but continue secreting. Or you secrete before you are completely unconscius. This means you are somewhat awake but you can't speak, move, etc. The victim will usually struggle, make some guttural sounds, eventually being able to move but usually thrashes and might scream for a moment. Even if it happens 3 times a week, it's terrifying because for the first bit of it, you are only semi-conscious. It took me a long time to get to where I could react to it, relax and focus on gaining consciousness. It really is very scary.

Vaguely OT but I was just thinking about this yesterday:

Has anybody else had the thing where you're just falling asleep then you suddenly snap fully awake and it feels like your 6 inches in the air and suddenly fall back onto the bed?

Or am I even crazier than I thought?

Yep... I think it's called a myclonic jerk or something similar.  My stepsister had a variant on that wherein she would see recycling boxes tumbling down around her.  Strange girl.

AFAIK, that's not exactly night terrors...many people with sleep paralysis also have night terrors, but they are distinct parasomnias.  (Ref. 1)

I've researched this thoroughly because Pedro has what can best be termed confusional arousals (Ref. 2).  I sincerely hope he doesn't mind my sharing this.  It's quite frightening to have a bed partner who occasionally leaps from the bed screaming and tearing the sheets off the mattress, particularly when that bed partner is considerably stronger.  But he and I have adapted rather well, and mercifully he usually doesn't remember his terrors the following morning.  I've become so sensitive to the warning signs -- episodes usually begin with a sharp intake of breath about thirty seconds before the screaming starts -- that I've awoken from a dead sleep and reflexively prepared to comfort him only to be greeted by a hearty sneeze!

Fortunately, his episodes have decreased steadily over the last few months.  I doubt they'll ever disappear completely, but we're dealing with them slightly better each time.

I almost always have this while dreaming that I'm falling off a ladder.  It's always within the first five minutes of sleeping, and it's always a ladder.

You think my dream-self would learn not to climb ladders, but no.  Instead I end up jerking like a jerk and kicking poor Pedro in the calves.
