What's in a name?
« on: May 04, 2004, 01:54:39 am »
Hopefully not too much 'cause I just shrugged mine off.

It's possibly one of the more insane decisions I have decided to make while high. OK, probably not one of the more insane I've made, but one of the more insane I have gone through with!
It felt kind of like something I had to do tonight. I have had a very odd weekend. Well, an incredibly odd weekend, and a very odd preceeding fortnight. I went away and was able to spend a weekend just introducing myself (to some people who I quasi-knew in this crazy ethereal manner) as Slink. I kind of realised that that's who I am now, and at least with that name I am comfortable to say it myself and thus can introduce myself to people!
I didn't veen keep my family name. What with it sucking.

So yes. There we go. Cripes, you all know my real name now. That oughtn't be allowed!

I thought so. 'Til I saw the list of spelling mistakes present in my above post.
Bugger.

But actually no ones ever said that to me and Zaphod has always been a hero of mine. Wow.

Oh, and I'm intrigued... Does this beat Paul's mohawk?

Are you telling us you legally changed your name to Slink?

It might help to tell people what you changed it from, G. Or, former G.

Personally, I totally think you're more of a Slink. So it that the whole name, just Slink? The one word?

That's fuck*ng sweet. I'm going to change my name when I get married this summer - first and last. They will both be conventional names, though.

You can never top the mohawk.

But it's gone now.

Good luck with the new name though.

I'm going to shave my head except for the back, and shave my new name into that.

Paul, I respect your decisions entirely, but your head is unnervingly shiny and pointed.

(Don't take it personal-like. I'm sure mine would be too.)

Anyway, congrats, Slink, and early congrats to Nabu. It's a gutsier thing you've done or will do than... well, than I'm entirely capable of.

One of my coworkers got married and changed both names, from Amy *something, I don't really pay attention*, to Ruby Uby.
How long before that gets real damn annoying?
However, Slink, in your case, the name change is most excellent (unless you changed your last name to, like, Dink, and your middle name is Yosemete), and I'll bet it will serve you well. For one, now I feel okay with getting William Gibson to sign your copy of "Pattern Recognition" to "Slink"...because it's your real name now!

I changed my name eleven years ago last month.

What, did you think someone would actually name their child "Jough"?

Good on you, Slink - I'm all for people moving to non-human names.

And there's no adjustment for me, since I've never known you as anything else.

Although I kinda dig your last name.  Lots of character.

I'd just think all the time about Ruby Tuesday and Pere Ubu.  It wouldn't be such a bad life.

But yeah, props to you Slink.  As anyone here with whom I've traded CDs knows, I have a ridiculous name, and I've thought many's the time of ditching it.

Well, to kind of try and answer all in one fell swoop - yes JL, it is now Legally changed to Tormad Slink Jadranko.
I felt I should keep Tormad, one to make my parents happy, and two because I don't mind it, and I felt somehow like not letting go of my old name. But basically, I am now Slink Jadranko formally.
Which is interesting. I guess it'll kick in when I sort my passport and driving license out! Which also means I get to have a picture of me with short hair on my license.

I just think of me more as Slink now. I have always wanted to change my name, since I was about 11, but never really wanted to change it to anything conventional. So it just meant finding something I could identify myself as.
Eeeeps.

Dude, you have the name of a schoolgirl who goes on magical adventures with cats, and maybe joins Belle & Sebastian. You know it, it's like Stuart David...**** ******....it works.
