While I will agree that there were some iffy calls, the Steelers won it fair and square. It's good to be a Steelers fan in the Northwest, I tell you what!
-
Football season is still going on?
~Paul
-
Well, not anymore.
-
Oh, man. Fuck you.
Where are you in the Northwest, by the way?
-
Inland Northwest. Northern Idaho, to be exact.
-
Oh cool. I've spent some time in Coeur d'Alene, and a lot of time in Spokane (which isn't Idaho, I know, but it's really close). Are you in that area?
I'm from the Seattle area, so, I repeat, fuck you. And I mean that in the nicest way possible.
-
Yes I am. I go to school in Moscow, University of Idaho.
-
Dropped passes cost the Seahawks more than the refs did. That and clock mismanagement. And missed field goals. Okay, and the calls.
Also made my final four pick turn out wrong.
-
Our Super Bowl party this year had 13 people show up, effectively reaching the maximum capacity of our condo. Next year's party may have to be in the neighborhood clubhouse. This is excellent, as I have grand designs for my SB party to get bigger and bigger each year (this was the fourth such party).
Of the 13, two or three didn't much care for football, one is a Browns fan, I'm a Redskins fan, and everyone else in the joint was a Steelers fan. So it was fun times. Only one (the Browns fan) was actively rooting for Seattle. The rest had sided with the Steelers, along with apparently everyone in Detroit. It was a good game, with not much to bitch about.
-
That was weird. Considering the tickets are handed out basically by lottery and contest pieces inside specially marked boxes of Wheaties it seemed unlikely for the fans in attendance to actually give a shit about either team. Even the announcers mentioned this at one point and wondered if somebody was just handing out Terrible Towels outside the entrance or something.
And it's been 26 years. I hardly think it qualifies as "one for the thumb" because there's probably all of 6 employees that have actually been with them for all 5.
And "world champions"? The hell? Was last year's game held in Seoul and I forgot? When was the team from Mexico City knocked out of contention?
-
With Pittsburgh being not all that far from Detroit, Steeler fans being all over the frickin' place, and the Steeler fan base generally being more rabid, I think they were more willing to pay inflated prices from ticket brokers and the like. Also, the "city of Detroit" got a number of tickets; not sure how they handed them out, but I'm sure they were taken by bandwagon-jumping native-son Jerome Bettis fans. Hence the pro-Steeler turnout.
There were four iffy calls by my count, none spectacularly awful, but they all went against the Seahawks. That drive where they started at their own 2, as it was happening I thought we were witnessing one of the all-time great Super Bowl drives. They completed a pass to the 1 and I thought for sure they were taking it in, but one questionable holding call and it comes way far back. Two plays later, interception, followed by the sweeeeeeeet WR pass, and that's your ballgame.
The ads mostly sucked. I think my favorite was the Full Throttle energy drink ad, for becoming more over the top with every passing second.
Every major American sports league calls themselves "World Champions," which is mostly stupid. If anyone can get away with it, it's the NFL, because there are no other serious contenders (sorry, Canada). There is an actual basketball club world championship, which is routinely won by the NBA champ, but they should at least wait until that's over before calling themselves World Champions. And while MLB and the NHL are far and away the most talented leagues of their kind, there are baseball teams in Cuba and hockey teams in Europe who would probably welcome a shot at the title.
-
This superbowl sucked in almost every way possible. It was poorly played, poorly coached, poorly officiated, and the only funny commercial was like 10 seconds long and just had one dude throwing a cellphone at another dude's head. (side note: what was with all the commercials of people tackling each other? yes, obviously tackling is football relevant, but there were literally i think about 6 or 7 commercials with this motif. did adam sandler write every commercial that was aired last night?).
-
I thought the MacGyver ad was entertaining and I'm always a sucker for a Benny Hill reference.
-
Very good call Cort I forgot about the MacGyver ad but that was pretty solid.
-
Talking about Super Bowl ads makes Baby Jesus cry.
~Paul
-
Yeah, how dare we talk about something as frivolous as sports, TV commercials, or webcomics with talking cats for that matter, when there are much bigger things happening in the world? We all suck. I'll go kill myself right now.
-
Yeah you're right Carlos. I need to follow my advice to Ark and stop caring. I caught part of the halftime show, thought the Stones looked and sounded pretty good.
~Paul
-
the Stones looked and sounded pretty good.
During the half-time show, were you actually listening to an older CD of the Stones and looking at a poster of Natalie Portman? That is the only way that sentence makes sense to me.
-
CortJstr, I'm with you in that I also do not understand the title of "World Champions" when no one every competes versus anyone but their fellow U.S. counterparts! It makes no sense! How do you conquer the world without ever fighting the fight?! :sigh: The truth may forever evade me...
Also, I preferred Grey's Anatomy over the Super Bowl. And why not, since the Super Bowl was basically not that happenin'...I mean, how can you watch it without hoping to see Justin Timberlake rip off Janet Jackson's clothes in a halftime show?!
-
Oh yes, and on a completely unrelated note, I forgot to mention how incredibly happy seeing Biz Markizzle's avitar made me...Oh, Philippe, I do love you...
-
Also, I preferred Grey's Anatomy over the Super Bowl.
Okay, so what IS a "code black"? I really want to know but refused to let those ads sway me into watching a show that I did not want to watch.
-
I will admit to being swayed - and I'll probably be swayed again next week, because of the DAMN CLIFFHANGER ENDINGS WHERE AS SOON AS THE CREDITS START RUNNING I HAVE A HEART ATTACK REALIZING THAT I HAVE TO WATCH THIS SHOW AGAIN NEXT WEEK EVEN THOUGH I DON'T WANT TO.
I will render this text unreadable so that those who do not wish to be spoiled are not, just select from

A code black is a bomb.
HERE, and in the middle is the answer.
-
Alex forgot to mention where the code black was! That was the best part! I don't know how to make my text the same color as the background and all hidden like he did, but if you want to know and won't be offended by hearing it, I'll post it anyways! Or ask Alex and he'll post it all fancy ##### like.
-
I thought the game was mediocre and the ads average.
I thought the calls were OK - that 'push off' in the endzone was kind of weak and we'll never know if Big Ben really broke the plane or not. The kicker for Seattle can't really be blamed because they never got close enough for him to have a high percentage shot. The real story of the game was the dropped passes for Seattle and some inexplicable clock decisions at the end. Pittsburgh won the game, but more than that I think Seattle lost the game.
My favorite ads were the cell phone throwing guy and the sofa-on-fire Benny Hill one which was just surreal.

This was exactly my reaction. The rest of my family already watches this show, so I have some nodding familiarity with it. Promos looked go, so why not -- I'd already written off the day to couch time anyhow (as befits Super Sunday).
Not bad, but a cliffhanger after that level of hype is just a fuck*ng low shenanigan.
-
You all should have been watching the Puppy Bowl (http://animal.discovery.com/convergence/puppybowl/puppybowl.html) instead!
-
Maybe if it had a code black I would have watched the puppy bowl.
And yes someone please tell me where the code black was; this is so much better than actually having to sit through a TV show.
-
I am sorry to everyone, but it was asked, so I oblige...the code black was IN A MAN'S CHEST! Some guy and his best friend created a homemade bazooka and a bomb to shoot from it and when the bomb didn't go off after shooting the bazooka he ventured to the front of it to figure out what went wrong and THAT'S when the dang thing decided to blow! GO FIGURE! Except :drum roll....: THE BOMB DIDN'T EXPLODE! It just lodged its little damn self in that man's chest. So when they found out, they had to call the bomb squad. And now Dr. Grey is standing with her hand in the man's chest to keep him from bleeding out and also if she moves, it may detonate the bomb! NOW YOU HAVE TO WATCH NEXT SUNDAY! CAN YOU BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT HANGING LIKE THAT?!
Is it sad that I am truly this excited about it and can't wait until Sunday?...It's almost like I have nothing better to do than post on TOUAMB and watch Grey's Anatomy...
-
What I found so funny was that they evacuated like a six block area. I mean, sure it's an explosive device, and sure if it goes off the dude and Dr. Gray aren't going to be any too happy about it. But dang! It's not like the whole hospitals going to go.
-
Exactly - a homemade rocket shell, while clearly a problem for the immediate people, and maybe those people next door with the other guy's brain, is probably no reason to evacuate an entire wing of a hospital.
Also, if the guy made it from his yard into the ambulance before the girl put her hand in, isn't it pretty clear that it's not going to explode? I mean, points for caution and everything, but come on.
-
In real life, they let the pizza guy with the bomb around his neck explode. TV can't compete with that.
Did his buddy bring him to the hospital in his car? Because the ambulance would never have transported him with a bomb in him. They would have created a perimeter around the guy and made the bomb squad deal with him first. Darwin at work.
-
That's really hilarious and weird. If the show were 24 instead of Grey's Anatomy, Jack Bauer would have stuffed that guy into a locker, taken him up in a helicopter, and dumped him over the Pacific Ocean.
-

No, the ambulance brought him in. But they were unaware there was a bomb in his chest until the second (literally) before the surgeon was going to cut into him! The guys wife was so hysterical that it took them forever to get the story out of her and they didn't know what caused the wound until almost too late. Then the shenanigans went down and the whole world was cleared in case of Hiroshima 2 and then they left us hanging in suspense of whether we would all die from it.
-
Back to football... I've read in two places now that on the 4th quarter play where the Seahawks completed a pass to the 1 yard line, but it was called back on a questionable holding penalty, that two Steelers were offsides on the play. If they'd still called holding, it would have been offsetting penalties, still 1st-and-10 at the 19.
I completely missed this at the time. Would love to see it with my own eyes. But oddly enough, NFL.com's video highlights don't show the play. Anyone else catch this?
-
Dang it Carlos! Didn't you hear when they said that descriptions of the game without express written consent of the NFL is prohibited? Now you're going to jail. Way to go.
-
You all should have been watching the Puppy Bowl (http://animal.discovery.com/convergence/puppybowl/puppybowl.html) instead!
YES! Thanks for mentioning it on IRC. I watched it after the game and it almost completely cheered me up. I tried to get my sister to watch it, but there was just no consoling her. If I could turn back time, if I could find a way...I would kill Bill Leavy. Or, I would have just wached the Puppy Bowl instead.
-

The NFL can write their consent... on my wang.
Wait, wrong webcomic. Sorry.

I missed that as well, though I did not miss how extremely ticky-tack those holding calls were. Just generally these were the worst officiated playoffs in recent memory. I sort of miss the time when the camera work from the TV networks was so bad that we couldn't see the details of a given play from like 40 different angles. At least back then we didn't realize how many huge, huge calls were being blown.

Hells yes the puppy bowl! Did you vote for MVP? I voted for Agatha, that was a cute little bitch. Did you notice Barry (the white poodle) he was acting a fool! All tearing into the other dogs, trying to make up for the fact that his breed will always be girly. But then Agatha took his ass down a few on several occasions. Really put him in this place. That's why she got my vote.
Very cute dogs really, any one that missed it should watch it next year for sure. Plus there is a bowl cam, instant replays and a referee with an ear piercing that looks like an intern.
-
a referee with an ear piercing that looks like an intern.
Oh yeah, all sitting on the sidelines hoping a puppy will poop so he gets to be on TV.
Vote Louie! They won't admit it but he's obviously a pitbull mix. Just enough pit in him to kick ass. Go Louie!
-
C'mon, folks. Sheeba. You can't deny the power of the freakin' Shiba Inu! That is a dog that manages to be both adorable and worrisome at the same time. It takes serious effort to trigger both the "I should hug this" and "I should flee from this" circuits at once.
-
You are right, and normally my vote would be for a Shiba, but I hate to encourage those Shibas that are the wrong color. Only the red ones are any good. Still, a strong second choice.
-
Danny 1 41036 31%
Sheeba 2 28974 22%
Belle 3 16418 12%
Louie 4 11967 9%
Barry 5 7505 6%
Domino 6 4851 4%
Agatha 7 4261 3%
Bessie 8 2975 2%
Mickey 9 2897 2%
Cha Cha 10 2834 2%
Badger 11 2705 2%
Tab 12 2645 2%
Zena 13 2492 2%
Disco 14 2448 2%
Who the hell is voting for that white bastard of a dog, Barry? I hate the world right now!! Agatha for the win!
-
Ok I like this thread now. There were like almost 2 post about the game, and the rest has been about the lame ass show that followed and mostly about the Puppy Bowl. Most TOUAMBites would rather watch a dog show than the super bowl. Boo Yah.

It's because big sweaty guys that no one knows are not nearly as entertaining as a preciously cute little puppy doggy.
Also, that show was not lame ass...it was AMAZING! Good day now. I said GOOD DAY!
-
Puppies could have removed and disarmed that bomb with ease. EASE!
-
From the Washington Post:
Puppy Bowl was telecast three times on Sunday. At its height, its average audience of 690,000 nearly equaled MSNBC's 707,000 for the State of the Union address last week.
-
Apparently, there isn't much that puppies aren't capable of doing. Maybe the world just needs a little...puppy love. (insert insipid boy band single here)
