That really is why most people want you to get married, though.

They wanna gruffle up grub at a big ol' excuse for a party.

Don't let 'em tell you any different.

The more I stare at this strip (it's so creepy, but so well-done), the more my cynical side thinks that the Philippe thing is a red herring of sorts and that there'll be some extended Beef/Ray drama going on, while Philippe returns home safely.

But really, I've been looking at it for the past ten minutes and I just haven't a clue where this thing is heading. If Chris doesn't update on Wednesday I'm going to have a damn heart attack.

Huh.  So what was so horrifying about this one that the Acheheads would revolt and hate it?

Is it because it is horribly dull?  Is that why?

Man these strips are just awesome because of the ray/beef dialog.  It is amazing no one has mentioned ray's line to beef:

"This is him!  This is my guy!
               That's why he's my guy!"

It is a poem, man, a fuck*ng poem. (said in I haven't slept for two days, really stoned voice)

Some truly excellent character designs on these mystery fellows.  This is becoming more and more a very evident strength of O's art, simple linework and fascinatingly elaborate and downright weird design.

I like the concurrent story lines...it's a pretty cool juxtaposition.

Which raises the question:

Is Onstad getting all arty and maudlin on us, or is he trying to show new readers he's gained since the outset of the GOF a couple of the extreme sides of Achewood simultanesously?

I...

Am in love with this strip.  The character designs are amazing.  I am so creeped out.

Is anyone else really happy to see Beef snapping back at Ray?

Also, gruffle is totally entering my vocabulary.  As of now.

That is how I feel as well.  It is like an old episode of some morning cartoons when I was a kid that have like one story but the second segment is a different show.  The first and third continue, etc.

What the HELL is with Ray's arms?  He fights a few guys and now he is all jacked like a ninja turtle?

The day one of my buds asks me, 'When you gonna get married?' is the day I spit on their shoes.

I think Onstad is aiming for a very grandiose series of arcs.  (Just don't overdo it, man.)

I made a funny sound (funny-creepy, not funny-haha) after my initial glance at the first three panels.  It was something like uuwwaahhhnnhaaaaa.

The juxtaposition of the disturbing/ookie Phillippe storyline with Ray's banal party should be highly effective.

Shit, those two are so creepy they make me wish Nice Pete would come along and inject a note of sanity and security into the scene.  Those two give Trouble Man and No-No the willies.

They are hairlip bog-zombie hobos. Obviously.

Phillipe finally went too far, and now he is going to pay with his life. Since they are ugly and creepy, they are evil and probably eat baby otters.

They are hairlip bog-zombie hobos. Obviously.

Canned. Even if "harelip" is misspelled.

Yeah, my initial reaction was pretty much WHAT the FUCK, and I seriously can't keep the strip open on the screen. I can't look at that tall one's face. Too creepy. Are those his eyes? Are they just sunken, skin covered depressions? Are those them on the top of his head? Or are those his nostrils? Why oh why did I wait until 3 AM to see the strip?

I zzz Téodor snif beddy bye indeed. Christ.

Ray and Beef interlude is just classic Ray and Beef. Still, it's such believable dialogue. Those two are straight-up friends.

EDIT: Oh wait. Those are grown-up outcast sea otters, aren't they? That's why they both have gross otter mouths (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=10152001). Maybe we're seeing some sort of disturbing foster care thing develop.

The tall one's face. I'm imagining a face covered in leporous gray skin, maybe a small red blotch here and there. And there are no eyes.

No eyes.

There's something there, under the skin. Something that twitches and moves and provides sensory information of a sort.

Dammit Onstad.

I was doing ok on this one until I noticed: is that a bone showing at the elbow of the standing one's shirt?

And yeah they do kind of have otter mouths but then everyone in achewood has kind of an upward mouth thing going, I'm willing to guess the standing one is an otter but not the sitting one I think.

This seems to be the whole 'creepy guys help out young helpless dude in distress and turn out to be nice' situation. They're too creepy to be evil. But then again.. this is Achewood, so who the fuck knows?

I'm hoping for Phillipe's long, painful death at the hands of hooks or something.

Eh...probably nothing...

But I find it interesting that what appeared to be the one-off in between the GOF arc and this one was Lie Bot telling Phillipe a terrifying (to Phillipe) story right before he went to bed.

Just saying is all...

I take back what I said the other day.  Yes Mr. Onstad I will have your freakish lovechild on this fine day; I need to find a uterus first though.  Maybe out in the dumpster.

Anyway, Delicious strip.. just delicious.

Mr. the Stad seems to have a thing for characters who travel in pairs; not that I'm complaining mind you but: Ray and Beef, Emeril and Spongebath, Troubleman and No-No, &c.

Beef's sass in the main is grelicious as well.  All pulling up his bracelet indeed.  Ray's ego re-fulfilling coverup shows Beef got to him a little bit I think.

Yeah, awesome character designs. Again, it's the mouths. I mean what is the wheelchair dude's mouth supposed to be? And yet it works. It's horrible.

I too, would actually like Phillipe to die. I love the character but his ugly death would be an everlasting reminder that Achewood takes no prisoners.

Ladies and Gentleman today Chris Onstad has taken Achewood to a new Zenith.  There has always been the funny achewood, then came the noir achwood of super secret ice cream parlour and cartilidge head, but now we've got both of those elements in a single strip.  This strip would be a landmark even if it weren't massively successful on both of these levels, but it is.  The dialoge between Beef and Ray is priceless, Beef's zinger is one that will be long remembered here i'm sure of that.  And the events unfolding in the forest are awesome in many ways.  So creepy yet beautifully renedered, it's filled with suspense.  It's dark, yet vivid, I can't wait to find out what happens next with these rich new characters.  Masterpiece!!!

I think the standing character is a female.

Lithium vs. Calvin comic.

What, like Calvin becomes a bi-polar revolutionary on a mission to take down Big Pharma (Personified by a walking, megalomaniacal, superpowered tablet of Lithium known as Dr. Dope) using only the power of his wits and the help of his tiger sidekick?

I actually don't know what you are refferring to, and would appreciate clarification, though that possibility is certainly in danger of being awesome.
Title: Re: ... - 11 Apr 06

See, when Onstad mentioned we wouldn't like what happened Tues., I figured Phillipe would end up in some peril, like falling down a hole with sheer, unclimbable sides or tumbling into the creekand realizing that for an otter, even a stuffed otter, he can't swim very well...or at all. Or even being approached by strangers with an unsavory appearance.

I did not count on him being snatched by a couple of disfugured mutants. Again, well played Onstad.

Plus, I think I'm going to like the juxtaposition of the Perils of Phillipe and The Guys Hanging Out. I like Ray's expression in that third panel, because he realizes Beef's comment struck home and he's trying to cover because even he realizes what a pig he makes of himself with the eats at weddings.

I really like the "lost stuffed animals" idea for these two, but on closer inspection, it seems very unlikely. The main reason is that the tall one has a bone sticking out of his sleeve; no matter how "rough-loved," stuffed animals do not have bones. However, he definitely has a circle of stitches around his head. Lobotomy? A very strange, lopsided lobotomy??
The wheelchaired one also has lost both of his legs, but the remaining appendages are the same length. This suggests a train or car crash rather than leprosy. Then again, the bone-showing of the the tall one suggests leprosy. OR, that he knawed himself out of a trap?
Also, does the wheelchair guy have a right paw? It's never shown; it could be the hand which is moving the wheelchair though.
Not sure I want to know, but what is the tall one's huge collar/scarf covering up? The high placement of his  ears suggests that he is a dog or cat who has lost his ears. His mouth also looks dog-like, but the lack of tail makes one wonder.

Also, look at the tunnel. Are those wheelchair tracks coming out? Possibly these two live together in the abandoned tunnel and wheel/walk out every night. Also, note the wheelchair tracks in the final panel; the guy has turned all the way around in place and headed back. Not sure if that means they're going to the tunnel again or not, but it's cool-looking.

(I've looked at the pair for so long now that I'm not sure they'e still scary. Hooray.)

That is not an exposed bone. That is a skinny dude's elbow. Also, while the stuffed animals with which you are familiar may lack bones, I also suspect that they are incapable of vomiting and then passing out face-down in the vomit as Lyle has done (Lyle, remember, is an alive stuffed tiger). Alive stuffed animals operate under Different Rules.

I still think it's a bone. Look at panel seven. Is the elbow DRIPPING? Plus it would be in Onstad's vein of creepiness if 'twere a bone.
But you're right about how stuffed animals might have bones in Achewood.  I'm excited now because it means they might still be abandoned stuffed animals.

He said he was afraid to mention it in case all people got all snippy when he missed a day. But then he realized Onstad misses all the time and nobody seems to mind.

I imagine there are people with elaborate perl scripts set up to email Onstad and others when they've missed a day. It seems to be the #1 reason webcomic artists go off the deep end.

And then there's Penny Arcade, which hasn't missed a comic in ever. I don't know how those boys do it.

I think Penny Arcade turned to crap.  Most of it doesn't even make sense anymore unless you are updated to the minute on gaming news.  I wouldn't dare say "pretentious" but it would apply.  I never laugh at it anymore, just wonder what the hell it's about.

We've had this discussion numerous times, do you want it fast or do you want it good.  Given that choice i'll take the latter of course, but I was only pointing out that his gentle reminder wasn't a reminder because it was the first we've heard of it.  Yeah, it's never really been a daily strip, but it used to at least aspire to be one. So don't admonish us for expecting it to be a daily strip when you've never said otherwise.

Oh c'mon, it's always been esoteric gaming stuff. Actually, I'd say it's gotten less gamer focused as the years go by. They just had a mini arc featuring Kenny Rogers (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/03/10) fer chrissakes. I haven't played any games other than Mysts, SimCities, and Civs my whole life, and I still read and enjoy the comic. Every once in awhile I need to read a paragraph of Tycho's news post to figure out what's going on, but that's about it. For instance, I know nothing about Warhammer online, and I've never played WoW, but I still got a kick out of this one (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/04/10).

Hmm - don't know why I got so worked up about that. They just seem like super nice guys who write a funny comic and never go all drama queen on their fans. (Note, I'm not saying Onstad, or anyone else, is queening out. I'm just saying that these guys don't.)

Penny Arcade is still consistently funny and it's just as much insider as it always was; chances are, you've changed.  I know I don't have time to follow the gaming industry as religiously as I did when I was a lad with a job that didn't require as much out of me as my current one.  (Yes yes, I'm aware it doesn't look that way what with my online time and whatnot... shutup).

Half the time I find Tycho's posts to be the funniest part of the whole gig really.

Also if you don't like Twisp and Catsby you can come over to my place and I will stab you in the jaw... seriously, there's a neon sign out there now "Jaw Stabbing Performed BY THE MINUTE: Now Serving 2 Million"

Y'see, that's part of what I love about Achewood... it seems to be the only internet comic strip that isn't about roleplaying games, Transformers or sex acts involving shapeshifting.

I will take two strips a week about Awesome Things over seven strips a week about Optimus Prime and a gay werebear's humourous observations on the pecadilloes of Worlds of Warcraft.

Am I the only person on the internet who has never played an interactive roleplaying game of any kind, be it twelve-sided-die or multiplayer things with strange words like "spawn" and something-"mining"... and doesn't want to? It feels like it. There have to be others.

There have to be others who beat Dragon Warrior 4 on their Nintendo, put down the paddle and said: "Enough. Enough and now I am a man."

This would be a fun uprising to stage, were I not beholden to such goals as "paying the rent" and "doing useful things with my life."

My cynical side tells me that Onstad knows of the power of making us wait an extra day after a cliffhanger strip.

You're not alone.  I've never played any roleplaying games and i'm not into video games at all.  I love pinball (yeah that's right i'm talking about pinball again), but I could never really get into video games (asteroids not withstanding).

It just seems so incredibly boring to me.

Scary Go Round never misses a day (except for his guest week strips, and they are updated every day) and is consistently funny while maintaining storylines for weeks at a time.

It can be done without furrysex and references to RPGs. Although the last story did feature a Minotaur. A sad, lonely misunderstood Minotaur (but not as sad and misunderstood as The Saddest Wookiee)

Yes, he does a great job on a regular basis.  But... I don't check a messageboard about his comic a zillion times a day. I don't cook food out of his cookbook and take pictures of it. I never met a bunch of internet strangers in person because of him. I don't use phrases from his comics in my everyday life.

I guess I'm saying that reliability isn't everything.  Onstad's the friend who you know is going to stand you up at the last minute half the time, but it's such a party when he does show up that you cut him a ton of slack for all the other times.

I'm in the "don't play video games but still think PA is consistently amusing and frequently excellent" camp, myself, though the news posts are definitely a big part of the appeal. Besides, how can you not appreciate this speech? (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/04/10) This is exactly how I get when I Pat out, every time.

Also, for once Q doesn't need to stab me in the jaw. Hooray!

No gaming of any kind for me.  I prefer "real" activities like reading, knitting, and container gardening.  "But Hobot," you say, "LARPing is real!"

No.  No it is not.

I find that the best best best part of the Problem with Internet Roleplaying is...

When one of those snarky sarcastic lame-ironic "I Love The 80s/Everything Sucks/Geekhate" internet "humour" sites like... Somethingawful or Fark or so on and so on... spends long "comedy" articles on the tiniest minutae of the giant roleplaying game du jour and... completely blows their cover as detached satirists and reveal weeping cringing dorks that just want to have their half-elf gather more imaginary gold.

"You suck, you all suck, everything sucks and is stupid and everyone is a geek and takes the internet too seriously except for me and... DAMMIT, WHERE'S THE NEW SWORD THAT DOES NOT EXIST IN ANY WAY THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE OUT THIS WEEK? WAAAHH! WAAAH!"

It is one of those deeply gratifying things that warms you on the inside to witness.

If you think those sites think they have a cover to blow you are greatly misinterpreting. The kind of situation you are kind of waving at (I am not sure because you are pretty nonspecific) indicates an acknowledgement that "Yeah, we're pretty much no-life dorks ourselves".

I guess I should go weep and cringe now and have my half-elf gather more imaginary gold, because I play RPGs and video games and also read comic books. I guess that makes me a "super-dork" (see, it is a hilarious joke because it incorporates the extra dorky activity in a way that does not actually indicate any knowledge thereof).

Be passionate about your nerdliness, Ben, that's all I ask. Be unashamed.

If... levelling up your... orcling... so he can shoot... Magic Missle? If that's what rocks your socks, man, rock proudly.

Be the ruling body!

I, myself, am... a cult-film dork, a radio dork, a progressive rock dork, a baseball statistics dork... and those are just the dorkinesses I can come up with off the top of my head. I am posting on the unofficial message board of an internet comic, y'know, so I just assumed that my support of being an Enthusiast About Things was implicit.

My beef is not with your desire to play a certain type of game. Do I understand it? Absolutely not, but dude, rock proudly. Perhaps you took my Dragon Warrior 4 comment as a Deep Statement of Opinion and not a Glib Use of An Obscure Cultural Reference for Fun. Mea culpa, if that's the case.

My beef is with the dutchbags (my new favorite internet malpropism insult, by the by) who are fighting the Battle of Who Can Care Less and expect all to fight that battle as well... except when its their own enthusiasm, then it is totally Good and Right to be unironically enthusiastic. It's a really dutchy way to act that could only be carried forward by major dutchbags.

In my experience, it's usually the people who claim to only be interested in Nerd Things ironically who are actually the biggest douches -- and, quite frequently, totally closet cases about this hobby. While there are certainly exceptions (God only knows that there are enough honest-to-Orcus authentic Losers in this hobby, but there are losers everywhere), most of the gamers I've known who have been forthright and honest about their hobbyists are also indistinguishable in this regard from any other hobbyists. They play for fun or for social connection, and it's certainly no more obsessive than having a weekly poker night would be. (I enjoy roleplaying, but I also enjoy just hanging out with the people I game with; it's a good excuse, when everyone's running around on insane schedules, to have three hours a week designated "hang out and have fun" time.)

We need a sticky explaining these.

Depending on who you ask, they're either a worthy representation of the value of a board members contributions (high = good), while some view it as an arbitrary, pointless system that trivalises the personality of the board by making cans more important than the person owning them. Essentially, people take cans for crap posts and give cans for good ones.

When you get to 25 posts, you can give or take cans. But be nice, because our beloved Jough tracks you down if you act like a dick.

Ohh, rad ... my cans have gone from 1 to 5 to 2 to 4, so I didn't know if it was something related to how many posts/threads I could make or what. Guess I'm just a really polarizing poster. :v

Ehhhh, I dunno.  You make a good point, but when I used to read it [almost] everyday, it seemed like there was always classic interaction between the characters.  Since then, the relationship between the characters has never developed at all, and strips that are just "EA sux because of this thing you've never heard of" seem to show up more and more often.

I must've just got bored of it and they've never really tried to evolve.

Yeah dude, if you're looking for character development, PA ain't your strip.

On the opposite end of that, is there anybody out there who still reads Megatokyo? I read it for maybe a year way back in the day, and then I gave up. It's real purty, but I got sick of comparing notes on which underage Japanese girl was which.

I still read Megatokyo... for a serial, it moves hell of the slow.   They've been running it for like 8 or 9 years now, and I think only 8 or 9 days have passed in the strip.

Maybe a month.

I stopped reading for a while when they had the weird side plot about windmills and girls with wings...***** wings?  I like a good mish-mash, but that was a little far.

Also: Penny Arcade.   Yes... I read it for the news posts.   Tycho has always been gifted with words.   Sometimes I forget to read the comic.

I don't know if that's really all that unusual. Wigu is only on day 4 or 5. The first 6 issues of The Tick are subtitled Sunday Through Thursday, IIRC. And hell between 1960 and 1990 Peter Parker only aged like 6 years.

I read Megatokyo for a while because I am a sucker for pictures of Japanese city streets.  But I couldn't tell the characters apart.  And, um, it had a plot?
