Is there really a kind of therapy where you memorize random numbers? I hadn't heard of it :/
I wonder what's so scary to Ray about violins and Charlie Chaplin, too :/
-
Man.. are we back on diabetes here? This is like recurring themes to the max. Badass competitions. Diabetes. Goth Mockery. Next thing you know there's going to be an arc about "ConversationTestes"
(I just had to stop myself from saying "Way to go OFFSTAD" even though the Patesqueosity amused me)
-
The only scary thing about Charlie Chaplin is that he looks like Cartilage Head in Ray's drawing.
-
Huh. I would've thought that the Diabetes Results Center would use printed labels. If Avery is too expensive there are generics now, guys.

I feel like maybe they do, but Ray's drawings are not quite as "really high-quality" as he thinks.
-

But the Chaplin drawing was photorealistic!
-
In Ray's mind, with his very vague and generalized knowledge of most things, Chaplin is probably just... a generic symbol for being a multi-talent genius, such as Ray aspires to be and fears (knows) he is not. An avatar of the lofty goals toward which Ray foolishly aspires.
"There's a dude I gotta live up to, that dude from the old movies who looked like Hitler's good twin."
-
I wonder if this will lead to an arc where Ray actually goes out and gets a proper diabetes test done.
If Onstad is truly going for recurring themes it'll happen after Beef gets shot and needs a kidney, and while kidney brothers may not be quite as special as lung brothers (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=03062003), it'd be an interesting way for Ray to truly confront his fear.
-
Incidentally, I just noticed that Ray's area code, 94526, puts Achewood in the East Bay, basically in Danville. I always assumed it was more or less coterminous with San Carlos, where the Onstads live, (http://chrisonstad.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_chrisonstad_archive.html) which is on the peninsula, probably about 30 mins away.

Better yet, pancreas brothers. There's nothing closer than the bonds between islets of Langerhans.*
*Those of you up on your anatomy will appreciate this statement on another level.

Come on kids, please remember to post a link to the strip:
Ray's Drawing Therapy, Wednesday June 28th, 2006 (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=06282006)
Feh!
Amateurs!
-
Damn that Diabetes! Damn it to HELL!
-
Incidentally, I just noticed that Ray's area code, 94526, puts Achewood in the East Bay, basically in Danville. I always assumed it was more or less coterminous with San Carlos, where the Onstads live, (http://chrisonstad.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_chrisonstad_archive.html) which is on the peninsula, probably about 30 mins away.
The Acheverse (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=01032005) is based in North Cali ... according to Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=palo+alto+ca&ie=UTF8&ll=37.444812,-122.149&spn=0.037275,0.097504&om=1), Dexter University = Stanford, and Seven Pines Golf Course = Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course. Ray lives on Claremont Way in Menlo Park (zip code 94025, not 94526), the Onstads and their housemates (in the strip, anyway) live on Coleridge Ave. in Palo Alto, Pat lives near Rhodes and Channing, and the apartments of Molly/Spongebath/Emeril/Vlad/etc. are near Gilbert and Laurel. Beef's old trailer looks like it may have either a) been the victim of urban renewal, b) a map error, or c) artistic license, since it looks like the map points to a location that's primarily smaller single-family houses. However, there *is* a small trailer park immediately to the south, so I'm going with 'b'. Likewise, I don't notice any apartments in the area of where Molly and co. live, but I'm thinking they might reside in a once-single-family house that was converted into a few smaller studios, or something similar.
Man, I feel like I should've been enjoying a smoked turkey leg while I did that.
-
Okay, we're entering into Creepy Stalker Land here kids. Let's keep it about the comic.
On that note, this one I enjoyed. I think it may actually be theraputic to draw a detailed picture of your fears, because that way you're focusing on them and totally ruling over them like you are master of them.
I can see why it took two days to write this one.
-
Yea, this is a good idea, and pretty funny.
-
my favorite part is that ray is scared of violins... but goddamn if he isn't going to CONQUER that fear.
-
He is affraid of what a violin can do, not of the violin.
Violins are beautiful, this is a reasonable fear.
And, I thought "That stuff don't hurt me no more." was the star of the strip.
-
two days for this?
Chris Onstad? more like... Constad!
-
Okay, this is funny, and the drawings are cute. I think the Chaplin fear is the best of them, because it's one of the least explicable, although the envelope is pretty good too.
-

The Chaplin fear is that Ray has been having Cartilage Head nightmares but refuses to admit that the dude got to him that deeply. So he drew Cartilage Head, put a hat on it and called it Charlie Chaplin.
-
I for one am hoping that Onstad will continue this theme further.
In my mind I am dreaming of a six month arc where we can fully explore Ray's existential angst, where we will plumb the depths of Ray's mind, where we will take a long, long, journey that starts from Ray's conception and follows him through his troubled childhood, we will see him meet Beef for the first time, understand the conficted mind of a rebelious teenager, and continue until Ray is laid bare before us in all his oh so tarnished glory for us all to know and to see.
Failing that, I'd settle for Conelius Bear: The Early Years
-

I'm still waiting for The Story Of Molly Sanders!
-
... and follows [Ray] through his troubled childhood...
come again?
-
come again?
Ray has WASP-y angst. He grew up privileged, but he never fit in. This is why he hung out with Beef (from the Wrong Side of the Tracks) instead of his Lacoste-wearing, Range Rover-driving peers.
It ain't easy havin' it easy.

Exactly! The cat is conflicted.
-
Mmm, but why does Teodor have claws?
He is a stuffed bear, not an alive one.
Minus 2 points.
-
Mmm, but why does Teodor have claws?
I would imagine that they're there to make it easier for T to pick things up &c.
With the claws he would clearly have better purchase, especially when trying to grip items with smooth surfaces.
-
Tangental to Ray's drawing his fears, I too had/have a manifestation of my doubts that comes through in doodling. Though mine is a character, Lil' Mikey, a rough representation of myself at six or seven... slender, doe-eyed, with a He-Man bowlhaircut, a Spidey shirt and sweat#####.
Generally, his purpose is to berate me for not living up to his potential, not accomplishing the goals he set out to accomplish and generally for not being the World-Beater Genius he believed himself/me/us to be. Also, because I grew up to be fat.
Do most peoples' inner-children do this to them? Tell them that 26 is too old to break in as a writer... to put the MacDonalds down, fatty... etc etc? I always assumed that most peoples' inner children just pop up to remind them how fun it is to play on swings or to suggest that maybe they should look on myspace for that girl they had a crush on in the third grade.
Not at the margins of notebooks, proclaiming you a failure.
Anyway, I just assumed Ray's fear of violins was that he'd never be really really good on them.
I view Ray's life as so confused by prilivedge that the only two things he has to be afraid of are... not being automatically awesome at things and death. If you've got enough money to choke Warren Buffet, what else is there to be afraid of?
-
I have versions of this doodle myself. I'm pretty sure some psychoanalytical person would have a field day with my college notebooks especially. I still have them for this very reason (and I am not one who keeps things).
-

This is how I interpreted it, as well. Sure, he has that deal with the Devil regarding playing piano and being a successful musician, but you don't really want to resort to making pacts with Satan in all instances of musical insecurity.
-

You could always turn them into a comic like the guy at XKCD did.
-
Lacoste-wearing, Range Rover-driving peers.
this has been my friends lately. I am so ashamed. Driving down Queens Road (ie: where all the "old money" houses are) blasting bad rap music. Me all covering my ears and saying "seriously guys, turn this shit off!" Them all laughing. All using their dad's credit card to pay for dinner. Me all going broke because I actually have to pay for my own dinner. All having to explain to one guy (I shit you not!) the concept that I had to pay for my own gas. He literally wears lacoste shirts while driving his Range-rover. what I'm saying is, THAT WAS LITERALLY A DESCRIPTION OF THE PAST MONTH OF MY LIFE. Stealing people's golf carts, going to barbeques in gated neighborhoods, meeting fat old men with pretty blonde wives...
but it's ok, because they're really cool people. They're just spoiled as fuck. it's kind of funny, actually.
anyway...
-

I suppose, but I don't think my stickmen ever look that streamlined.
If you want non-angst riddled doodles, consult flickr.. it has some of them.
-
Yeah, I figured that generally, the Devil only trades you for your soul once.
What would be the point of him/her owning your soul twice over?
Unless it's like The Marvel Universe and there's four or five cosmic beings running around claiming, to one extent or another, to be the Biblical Satan.
Then I guess he could trade it to three or four Satans and then just sort of hope that he'd outsmarted them, hoping that if it came up to arbitration in Supernatural Tricksters' Small-Claims Court, maybe the devils would have to just all give up right to him at once rather than battle it out and he'd get into heaven or a well-placed reincarnation (lipstick lesbian, living planet with a power ring, etc) on a loophole.
Homer Simpson pulled it off. That one stoner character on "Kids in the Hall" pulled it off.
In Ray's head, he's capable of deceiving multiple Great Deceivers at once... even if it would end up with Beef bailing him out in the end.

Yeah, my first collection of poems was pretty much versions of myself at various ages berating the author of the poems. It was far too post-postmodern to be any good.

I still want the opportunity to go back in time bitchslapping earlier incarnations of myself, like me around the high school days, kindergarten-era me, or hell, even last week me... God knows we asked for it.

It wouldn't work. You'd go back and be all, "pay the cable bill on time, bitch!" but you'd still forget. Like Bill reminding himself to wind his watch.

I wonder if Ray has a fear of sax, as well as a fear of violins.
I'm so so sorry

Surely not a Fear Of Music?!
(Because this joke really needed stretching further)
-
Just a Fear of Pop.
-
You're right, I can't commit.
To you.

Man, you're old signature was bugging the hell out of me because I knew it was a song, I just couldn't figure out which one. Then, today I put on Green by R.E.M. and find out. Then I get on and you have changed it, it's all too much.

That pun was once made by Gilda Radner on Weekend Update. I miss Gilda Radner. Even though she was before my time.

And since no one else said it, Welcome, LauraLaura.
-
A Laura so nice they named her twice.
Welcome.
P.S. I am astonished that Vassar doesn't block this site.

theinevitable, as I continue to prepair for your horrible reign of terror, I would like to pause and award you the WASP award for Lily-White Youthful Abandon. Most inoffensive "bad" behavior ever. Exemplary. Also being possibly paraded about as the one poor-ish slummy-ish friend earns bonus points. As a mixed racial girl who went to an exclusive private school on a special grant program for the financially disadvantaged, I salute you and your kith and kin. Bra-ha-vo.
-
Prepare.
-
oh, no, that's the best part. I think my family is possibly better-off than these people's families. But we aren't "old money," which apparently means "not throwing around money like it's month-old-salami." I come across as the Not-well-off one because I actually earn money from a job (and before that, it was a matter of having a fixed allowance, rather than a credit card). so I don't like to waste my funds.
I keep trying to type a funny story here, but I am not good at encapsulating things.
why are you preparing for my reign of "terror" exactly?
-
why are you preparing for my reign of "terror" exactly?
Well, remember how I realized I had to destroy you, but then, was rightly warned that one can only prepare (hope you're happy jough) for theinevitable? So if you are my protoge, and you will grow to destroy me, I can only get myself ready for what's to come...
This is not funny.
I'm tired.
-
wow, I thought I was Q's protege.
I need to figure out who I am emulating.
OK after a second's notice, I would rather Tell Amazing Stories than Be a Sick Fuck.
-
Why not both?
-
...because I am choosing you over Q? Is that not OK?
-
Oh you. You can be sick and under my wing. This is definitely not a contradiction.
-
Prepare.
It's not the (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2236.msg48203.html#msg48203) first (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2180.msg45460.html#msg45460) time (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2028.msg41963.html#msg41963) she's done this. I thought it was a special Canadian spelling or something.
~Paul
-
Yeah, I've always spelled it prepair, and the spell checker here doesn't correct me, but my Canadian dictionary doesn't list it as an alternate spelling, so it ain't a Canadian thing. As I have noted before I basically can't spell at all, ever. The nuns cared very little for teach us spelling. It's all spell checker for me, lads and lassies. I always connect prepair with repair... hence my spelling, but I'm fairly certain jough is totally right to correct me. The French word is "preparer" after all - and I know this one for sure. Considering where http://www.prepair.com/ (http://www.prepair.com/) takes me, I think I'll still use my spelling.
-

You haven't been my protege for like... weeks man. Smells can have you.
(Be careful Smells, he wets if you know what I mean!)
