There are too many quotable lines (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=03052007) in todays comic to pick one, but I think I have chosen the correct one.
-
oh man. would ray fall for this?
-
It is a good thing that gentlemen can disagree because...
"hero or fatso? [link]" is pretty much the funniest phrase to ever grace the internet.
I was greatly entertained by this strip but... not by the funny-but-kinda-rote scam-e-mail joke.
In terms of that joke, like, it is funny but has been done so many times that it has kind of lost its punch. It would be akin to making a joke about mistaking a man talking into a cell phone headset for an insane homeless gentleman...
The observation is apt, there is humour to the concept, but it has just been mentioned by so many people so many times that the familiarity breeds a certain level of comedy contempt.
No, I'm made to chuckle by the fact that Roast Beef turns out to be that one guy in the circle of friends who forwards everything he thinks is funny on the computer to everyone else and pretty much no one reads.
I should've known that guy, for them, was gonna be Beef and yet I did not. Humour ensued.
-
No, no LFM, all of Beef's e-mails are replies: He is replying to all the stuff Ray has forwarded him. Of course Ray would be that guy.
I personally like 'dancing baby turns ten - hella poignant'
My take on this: Ray may very well fall for it but a) it will be a genuine plea and he will add to his vast pile, or b) he'll dig out Mengis Adoso's number from his rolodex (they met at some fancy do and agreed they should really catch up some time over nachos and crispy stellas) and call to ask him why he didn't call Ray direct if he is in Serious Times. Adoso will be shocked at the deception and have the person who sent out the e-mails hunted down and killed for his families honour, but Ray won't realise this.
Am I straying close to fan fiction?
-
lfm-- my psych professor brought up the cell-phone/schitzo person thing in class the other day. There was an audible groan.
And then these girls started laughing hysterically.
-

Ah! Even better!
Then we are talking about Beef being such a good friend/so meticulous that he replies to every goddamned idiotic forward Ray sends him. That is how not-a-crap-dude Beef is if that is the case. Now it is funny in a hell of touching way. Nice!

I think if we learned anything from that one troller swoopin' on in a week ago and quizzing us on the Tenmen, it's that... postulating a character's reaction to a given situation from what they have done in past fictional occurances is not fan-fiction.
It is story-math and story-math is completely fine unless, I suppose, you went completely overboard.
Which I don't think you did.

Yeah, it's like Beef was brought up Right so he knows he must reply out of Politeness and might also try to explain to Ray how some of the more idiotic chain e-mails are probably not based on events such as ever happened, but Ray never learns and the forwards keep coming.
-
Ray all saying that yeah, Beef is right, that probably never happened. But this one did! I checked, it's legit man. It's for real.
-
So, how awesome would a song named "Gravity Train" be? I am of the inclination that it would be extremely awesome.

Hell of awesome.
"Baby Come and ride my...
GRAV-IT-EEE TRAIN"
-
For me, mostly a sort of shit strip - but Beef's emails all being replies to Ray's crap forwards is pretty nice.

Agreed. Fan fiction is story-numerology, so as long as you avoid that it's all good.
-
I feel like beef would also have emails that were like "hey is it OK if I come over in like 10 minutes to grab some stellas"
you know, it's not like he lives 10 seconds away.
my friend is famous for saying, TO HER ROOMMATE, "hey, can you just email [the homework] to me so that I don't have to write it down?"
-
Well, in her mild defense, it could be an issue of not being able to read her own handwriting.
Unless I write very slowly and concentrate completely, I can't read my own handwriting.
I just pretty much type everything, now, and my handwriting was crap to begin with.
It might not be sloth, it might just be understanding her situation and rolling with it.
-
no. she was being utterly lazy. I just remembered, I was not telling the story correctly at all.
it was the girl in the room next door. and it was "can you email it to me so I don't have to come over there?"
-
At first I thought Ray was singing in the first panel, but then I realized it's actually his inbox message sound. He's looking all excited because he has email. Oh, Ray.
If my inbox sang to me I would totally be checking my email every few seconds, perhaps hitting F5 to refresh just to make sure.
...I smoke two joints in the morning... YES EMAIL

The SO wanted me to sign up for Google Talk so that she could ask me stuff from the bedroom without getting up. I pointed out that our cordless phones already have a built-in intercom system but apparently the phone is too far away from the bed.
I've often considered turning on a New E-mail sound just like old times. Like back in college when everybody seemed to use either "<twang> Message for your, Sir!" or "You've got mail, motherfucker."

Yeah, we can tell that these are things that Ray sent to Beef from the subject line, "RE: check out this bald dog Beef (hilarious!)"
Ray would find the dancing baby's 10-year anniversary hella poignant. Beef would not.

my boss has this recorded .wav file of applause that she has set to play really loudly whenever she gets email.
-
Am I the only person who has never gotten one of these email giraffeing scam things? I have been getting email since I was 12 (I'm 21 minus three weeks now) and I have never received a misspelled plea for my bank number.
And also, I've read about those things....and what kind of pathetic scam artist spells that badly? Spell check is not hard to use.
I bet this goes somewhere, and I hope Phillipe somehow gets involved. If Phillipe had email, he would get caught up in this stuff all the time. And he would be the other guy in the Achewood universe who would send those things out.

You mean like SmileCash (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=11112004)? Or huge uncut asian jerkboys (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=09202002)?

I have to be honest, this (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=06072006) was the first time I had ever heard a joke about a crazy guy on a cell phone and I laughed a bunch. Of course, I bet the execution of it is better than anyone else's anyway.
In a similar vein, I felt like hot or not spoofs have been way overdone and therefore was not as amused by the hero or fatso line.

My hope is that Ray falls for it hook line and sinker, but Beef finds out and helps him to scam the scammer ala 419 Eater (http://www.419eater.com/)

I've never got one to my personal e-mail address, though I've had them as part of bulk e-mails at my work. I like to think this is becuase I don't act like a damn fool with my personal information on the internets.

Ooh, I've seen these anti-scammers before but not this one specifically. Thanks for this new source of amusement.

I so enjoy doing this. I love to get all indignant and shit. I especially love when they say that some individual who happens to share my last name has died, and I write back and say "Oh sweet Jesus, Uncle Robert is dead? Why did I have to find out this way?"
-
Likewise, I'm hoping this gets spun out into an internationally ranging, surreal riff on "what would happen if this were true".
I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints,
And then I smoke two more....
-

See, perhaps this is a cultural artifact of living in Southern California.
Pretty much the moment I stepped off a Greyhound bus in a flannel shirt with a stalk of wheat in my mouth and into Los Angeles, I saw a dude talking to himself and another dude joking that he didn't know if the dude was homeless or a powerful businessman.
You could make this joke ten or fifteen times a day, just off observations of that same scene.
Whereas... I dunno... "hot or not" jokes seem so old to me that it flipped the dial and became insanely funny because it was so very old and so far away from my consciousness. It would be like turning on your computer and finding a webpage about Mr. T eating your balls.
"Holy shit! I somehow woke up in 1995! So funny!"
That is why a hot or not reference is so funny to me. It was so long ago that I forgot about it.

Here's something I found interesting:
There actually IS a song called "Gravity Train" (http://www.tesco.com/entertainment/product.aspx?R=518203&bci=7%7CCD). Track 14 on disc 2.
Well actually, that isn't the interesting part. Check out the first song on disc 2. The same song Ray's PC is playing in panel one.
An eerie coincidence.

Less a coincedence, more someone breaking Onstad's secret code.
We will only find out Molly's origin by listening to surfing-themed mix albums.

I would like to think this as well, but I do rather act like a damn fool with my personal information on the intraweb.
I figure that spam-blockers are like immune system: the only way they get better is if you test 'em!

That would be cooler if it was the Tesco of Tesco Vee's Hate Police. Of course, Tesco wouldn't have anything to do with any of those songs.

The problem is that it's more like stopping your regime of antibiotics early. The bacteria just gets that much stronger.

If a man or a lady did this to decode alleged significant messages in Achewood, that man or lady would be derided as insane at best and viewed skeptically even on TOUAMB.
If a man or a lady did this to decode alleged significant messages in LOST, that man or lady would be interviewed in TV Guide and be hailed as a hero on various other LOST fora.
It is up to us to determine which is worse.
-
True. This is because TV is fuck*ng the world in the ear.
-
Tragic truth: It is actually possible to decode achewood in such a way. It will never be possible to decode lost becuase those writers have lost their grip on rationality. It just broke my heart when I realised they were turning into the x-files.
-
when I realised they were turning into the x-files.
QFT. I watched the first season of Lost, mostly in re-runs. I was thinking then "I hope these guys already have the bones of the story written, or this will end up like the X-files." Two years(?) later, it seems to have come to pass. It was at about season 6 of the X-files that I gave up hope and accepted the fact that the writers were purely making it up as they went along.
-
Sure, but that Gillian Anderson - whew!
-
I think it is More Than Fair to say that Gillian Anderson's early work in the X-Files is responsible for an entire generation of sick fucks' (and more than a few hot-nerd girls, I assume) sexual fixation on the Hot Librarian Lady Archetype.
-
I, for one, am proud to admit that Gillian Anderson (or, at least Scully) is the sole reason I continued watching the show after I realized it had jumped the shark.
-
Gillian Welch is totally gorgeous. also, this is my 1000th post.
