Found it.  (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,3616.msg90471.html#msg90471)

First thing I thought of as well. I'd actually been thinking of that suggestion for a while, especially since I've recently felt like stealing that "I will give you a sign. And that sign will be that life is awesome" line every time I smoke.

THIS IS PROOF THAT ONSTAD STILL LURKS.

One other thing: note that Onstad has made the bat translucent. Hell. Of. Awesome.

At first, I thought that Ray was coming to a Philip K Dick-esque realization about the nature of reality, all gnostic and psychotic-breaky, in the first few panels and then... I realized he was LITERALLY talking about a road that plays music.

It was not a metaphor for the way information is holographically encrypted into what we believe to be reality that Ray was musing upon, he was not grasping for framework within which to understand this construction through the eyes of a person walking the earth in these modern times.

He was LITERALLY inventing the record-road.

...and that was the moment I realized I read too much into everything.

All pulling into the EZ-Pass lane, turning off the stereo, and the strains of Iron Maiden's "Number Of the Beast" all vibrating the entire vehicle while four small children in the car ahead of you cry and their bumper sticker saying "Abortion Stops a Beating Heart" falls off and disintegrates.

I'm watching Elvis's hair slowly float back down after Ray turns the bat up in panel 4. And Mr. Bear is still the most rational person there. I for one am not surprised.

all all all all all all all all all all

coldfrog, I have used up all the 'all's for the next hour. This is an intervention

(damn. Hell of tryin to tell people what words they can use. Shame on me)

Now, now.  There's plenty of "alls" to go around.  But also note "hella'" makes a nice substitution.

Come on now, don't be harsh to a n00b.  gowerski makes a good point in a way, since in the strip previous to this one Ray actually describes the bad as "clear liquid-filled acrylic." RMJ12345 might have been split on the green before.  That is what I suspect.

I like the thought process that leads to any message being expressed by something that relates to music, or more specifically records, must be a satanic message, even if its purpose is public safety.

For a second there, because I'm not a smoker, I looked at the bow on Mingus' hat and tried to figure out what kind of bone it could be. Then I had an "oh." moment.

No shame 'giraffe.  I used to smoke up to excess and it wasn't until I read your post that I got the reference myself (with Urban Dictionary's help).  You're probably just getting old.

No!  Dude!*

It's not that any message expressed by a record is satanic.

It's that, by driving the wrong way down a one-way street, you'd be playing the record backwards.  Any message encrypted into a record via backwards recording is satanic.

In this case, it's a satanic message telling you to stop playing the record backwards.

I cannot believe.  I cannot believe.  I cannot believe.  How awesome this strip is.

ok, I can't... does a "bone" mean a joint? or... his skull? is that it?

this:

makes me think that it does not mean his skull? I feel like his skull thinks...

I believe Nightlife is referring to his "head bone," ie. his brain.

I have seen a conceptualized version of the record-road about a year ago at an art exhibit here in Tempe.  At least, it was sort of like that.  I suppose it could be more correctly described as a music-box-road.

Even though a bone is a joint, in this case I think Nightlife is referring to his brain, since A) he doesn't have a joint in his hat, and B) his joint probably does not think.  Also, the rest of the poem is about his brain.  He might have chosen to describe his brain as a bone in order to evoke some stoner imagery.

Jaydub -- if you used urban dictionary to find out that a bone is a joint, just how many pages of the primary definition of "bone" did you have to go through before you got to that information?

Also:  This (http://www.tmbg.org/band-info/songs/lyrics/TurnAround.html) is the only satanic song about turning around that I can think of.

I have more to say about this strip, some of which is also about They Might Be Giants.  I will be back after homework.

I'm not sure.  I have a built in noise filter when it comes to UD.  Its more like - from Mattgiraffe's post I came to suspect there was a drug euphemism for 'bone' and so I went trolling for it.  There were a sufficient number of "joint" and "cigarette" and similar (chiefly British) euphemisms that I conclude there's some validity to it.  Also, I have seen folks at Reggae on the River with a jay rakishly tucked into their hatband so the line from Nightlife's rap makes sense from that angle too.  The fact that it could also reference "skull" only adds poetic weight to the idea it could be either (or both!).

I really want some glasses like the ones Nightlife has. or... maybe not.

this guy on my floor has these frames that scream "old school German man" that I really dig. They're similar to those black plastic frames that a lot of people have that I have wanted since I was a little kid and they were still lame, except they're... kind of taller? They are vertically bigger.

kind of like these (http://www.ingenious.org.uk/media/4.0_SAC/webimages/1043/8/10438229_1.jpg) but less rounded.

FUCK YES. Tiny can.

Speaking of crazy-ass inbreds and their retarded anti-choice bumper stickers...There's some asshole in my town who drives around with a "NOT A CHOICE" bumper sticker, and recently he added to his asinine car-based political ideology with a bumper sticker that says, "BORN TO HUNT, FORCED TO WORK" with a graphic of a deer or elk on it. I want to go make "HYPOCRITE" bumper stickers and plaster them all over his car. I heard him muttering, "Hurrr...the Bible says killin's wrong so women who use birth control are whores but Ann Coulter and Jesus sez that we getta rape the earth and pillage it and kill all the animals and eat 'em CUZ GAWD SAID SO."

ALSO: I am hella glad to see Nightlife. He's one of my favorites.

All I am saying is that a hat is a popular place to store a bone and that he didn't have one in the panel before that.  (it looks like he might be inhaling though).  Also, a cat like Nightlife is sure to be aware that a joint affects his brain.  But yeah, I guess it could just be about his brain.  That would be a weird thing for a person to call his brain though, especially when he calls his joint that.

It is an anti-abortion sticker that is next to a sticker that promotes killing things.

And yeah, abortion is the same way for me.

no, I meant the "Abortion Stops a Beating Heart" sticker.

But, I mean... what? I feel like hunting animals is very different from (what they view as) killing a baby.

Let's not get into this, though.

PS I realized, if I bought the glasses that Nightlife has, and wore my favorite article of clothing (a hooded blue zip-up)... I would basically look like the GM of the radio station I work at. Buzzed hair about 1 cm, sideburns, skinny white guy, blue zip-up hoodie, glasses... it would be going too far. It's enough that we like the almost-exact same music...

His other bumper sticker implies that he enjoys hunting animals for fun, as opposed to hunting for just for food. That he probably enjoys hunting and killing animals is what I think her issue is.

Look, either Life Is Sacred or it's not. So if you fuck*ng hunt and kill animals, or if you eat animals that have already been cut up for you and are purchased in a climate-controlled store, you're participating in death and murder, hence being a huge fuck*ng hypocrite. I find it amusing that they think that killing and eating living beings is a-ok (pigs have intelligence similar to a 3-year old human, for example), but for a woman to extricate a clump of cells outta her uterus is somehow evil. There are now efforts to make it illegal for women to get abortions even in case of severe fetal anomaly. I am fuck*ng sick of religious freak godbags saying, "She shouldn't of gotten herself raped in the first place!" or "The BABY'S life is important, not yours!" or "You're SO havin' that baby, bitch!" Or you could be like the fuck*ng nutty Texan senator who advocated selling babies for cold, hard cash (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/4654720.html).

It's all a bunch of shit. US out of my uterus.

So is it only cute animals that have sacred life? What about bacteria, or ants, or cockroaches, or rats, or beets?
How can one arbitrarily draw a line at what living thing is sacred and what is not?
Can it be simply understood that there is a very clear division between the life of a human the life of a beet? I'm just saying it is not necessarily hypocritical to eat animal and believe human life is sacred. The fine area of the debate, for me, is when exactly "human life begins". As a pro-choice male, I still struggle to justify to myself drawing some artificial line at the third trimester or day before birth or day of conception as to when its "ok" to terminate. What I don't struggle with is knowing that I don't have lady parts and therefore have very little to say about what happens in or around them.

Yay abortion!  Anyway.  Back to the subject at hand, which is playing records backwards.

So, you know the song "On Earth My Nina" by they might be giants?  The story, for those who don't:

Eight years ago, tmbg released an album online.  One of the tracks, called "On Earth My Nina," consists entirely of a voice singing backwards, unaccompanied.  As you listen to this track repeatedly -- which you do if you're a teenaged me -- it grows on you.  It becomes haunting and mysterious, and you start to imagine that the backwards words are forwards words, and that they make sense.

Tmbg explained at the time that they had written a song called "Thunderbird," and played it backwards.  They liked it backwards better than forwards, and so they listened to the backwards recording repeatedly until they could mimic it with their voices, and then recorded this mimicry.  "Hmm, the original must not have been a very good song," I thought, "But I'm glad they found a way to turn it into something cool."

Five years later they released another album, and one song on it in particular caught my attention.  It was very catchy, with cryptic lyrics seemingly about an addiction to some kind of transcendent experience.  It quickly became my favorite song on the album, perhaps one of my all time favorites.  This song was Thunderbird.

So, next time you wonder whether tmbg have sold out (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,3613.msg90422.html#msg90422), remember:  They wrote a hit, and sat on it five years, just to let the backwards version really sink in.

In conclusion:  Thunderbird/OEMN is the only song I know which is a song both backwards and forwards, and so it should be encoded on any single lane, two way streets in Ray's vision.

Also:  I think I am getting second-hand stoned just from parsing the rhyme scheme in Nightlife's poem.  Man.

on that note, the song-road-coding deal reminded me of this article i read once where someone came up with the idea to put a record needle type device onto some way old pottery. on some of the pots they discovered that somehow something had been rubbing against the pot while it was being molded, and recorded the vibrations at the time. The result was a recording of people talking and laughing at the time the ancient pottery was being made. Eerie.

Holy shit: has anyone else noticed that Cornelius is rocking the ganj?

So is it only cute animals that have sacred life? What about bacteria, or ants, or cockroaches, or rats, or beets?
How can one arbitrarily draw a line at what living thing is sacred and what is not?
Can it be simply understood that there is a very clear division between the life of a human the life of a beet? What I don't struggle with is knowing that I don't have lady parts and therefore have very little to say about what happens in or around them.

Technically speaking, if you justify humanity on anything reasonable - something that doesn't entitle ancephalic fetuses or the braindead to legal protection from termination - the level of brain activity which would qualify isn't present anywhere except in potentia until about, oh, 6 months after birth.

The only reason we get our panties in a bunch about infanticide is because we're programmed in the dumb hairless ape part of our brains to consider children cute (as opposed to the three other preprogrammed states: sex, food, and run) well before they're worth according with the dignity of a human being.

For perspective, it is literally biologically impossible for a human being to remember anything that actually happened before they were 18 months old. (Hypnotic regression to infancy, re-birthing, and especially 'past lives' are hilarious to me, knowing this. (That people have been put in jail because of 'recovered' infant molestation memories, that the idea of reincarnation basically kept the caste system alive and billions of human beings in rags in India for millenia, and that a young girl in Colorado died of strangulation while being crushed to death under a 'womb-simulating' blanket by her well-meaning parents and a couple of fraud therapists does kind of ruin the humor.)) I am not sure why I know this, but I do. I can look for a source for you if you like.

I'm not saying kill your baby with a tack hammer, but next time you hear about infanticide in some famine-stricken country don't be too fast to shout away the devil's advocates saying how otherwise the grown children are gonna starve. And pretty much any line in the sand as to where abortion becomes OK is arbitrary, unless you really find fetuses adorable.

That was on a Mythbusters episode.  Did you know they're not gay?

Don't want to see the episode where they test that one.

Yeah a Mythbusters where they prove they're not gay would be so awesome - they'd be all standing in a bulletproof box, firing dildos at a ballistics-gel ass.  "Nothing?"  "Nothing."  "Okay, well, I call this Myth busted!"

Also, a highway that played music to determine speed would definitely work for me.  The song I'm listening to is directly related to whether I am in "relaxed Sunday drive" mode or "get the fuck out of my way, I'm tryin' to get somewhere" mode.

Also, yes, lets not do the abortion thing.  If anyone really wants to beat a dead dog, please search and post to any of the way-too many-already threads where it's debated.  This strip has nothing to do with fetuses people - unless hairless Elvis is in an un-born state...

The funny thing about the highway music thing is that this is an idea that I've had for a while.

"You know, you could vary the depth and spacing of those strips so that it would make a recognizable sound rather than a constant tone, maybe a baritone voice telling the car to "slooow doooown."  I don't think you could get the kind of fidelity of information to get a recognizable song in there, plus you're going to get a delay-pedal effect when your back tires roll over the same strip.  The pitch and tenor of the message is going to be affected by how fast you're going (if the strip is really intended for you, you'd get a Tod the Squirrel squeeking *slow down!* in echo) and if you're going the wrong way you'd get a "nwod wools" which would probably freak you out pretty bad if you were in whatever mental state is making you go the wrong damn way down the road, you moron.

Anyway, this is an idea I've had for like, ever, and won't ever shut up about, so it's funny to see it repeated somewhere else.  That it is repeated by a stoned talking cat... I don't know what that says about me or my ideas in general.

Although high speed dildos fired at ballistics-gel asses would be entertaining I think it's not necessary. They hired Kari, therefore they straight or at least bi.

I believe that TMBG has never actually released a song with legitmate backwards singing. It's always them imitating singing backwards. So if you were to play Subliminal backwards you still wouldn't be able to understand what they were saying.

They hired Kari, therefore they straight or at least bi.

Proves nothing. Could just be to appeal to the audience.

They also put her in a body suit w/ visible thong in her first appearance. Although I don't recall how much they were looking at her.

We never have seen their wives. And Adam was single when the show started.

What about when Adam was playing with the fake breasts and falsies?

Also: Kari. Kari!

Yeah a Mythbusters where they prove they're not gay would be so awesome - they'd be all standing in a bulletproof box, firing dildos at a ballistics-gel ass.  "Nothing?"  "Nothing."  "Okay, well, I call this Myth busted!"

Heh, you get a tiny can, cuz I just nearly shot diet Dr. Pepper out my nose. That's awesome.

ok. this "bodysuit with visible thong." Was it visible literally, or was it visible through the bodysuit because of Tight?

Not particularly naughty, but some people's standards are pretty stringent...

oh, geez. tame.

I googled her, and that picture came up, and I figured it was a fake nude image. I was confused, as it didn't even show her head.

Man. Let's be honest... the thong is a brilliant invention. Sorry, true.

You see her head in the episode. Later she takes that photo and gives it a huge cottage cheese butt.

This conversation bothers me in that I don't remember the episode itself and I'm pretty sure the draw is "What, I missed one!?! INCOMPLETION! AAARGH!" not "Oh Noes, no bodysuit butt shots for me".

Damn, I think I just experienced the Collectors Gay.

It was the fat woman stuck to the airline toilet story. It was a pretty early episode and apparently Kari had basically been coming to the shop and pestering Jamie for a job. I believe this was part of her hazing. Or perhaps her interview.

"Oh Noes..."

Ash, where does this come from?  The SO started saying "Oh Noes!" about a month ago, I asked him why, he said he just made it up, but I was sure I'd heard it somewhere before, and now this...

As for Kari, they really treat her like one of the guys, and I sort of thought she might be a lesbian.  She's hot in that way.  The way that makes a girl wonder.

I don't know where it started, but it's been around long enough that it was the title of Q's page back when he was still posting.

When I was a toddler I remember my dad owning a pair of glasses like that.  They were made of fake tortoiseshell.

Personally, I can't stand how angular glasses frames have become.  Black plastic rims being back in style is alright, but what I'd really like to see would be that style, only with perfectly circular lenses, like Harry Truman's glasses.  I had a pair similar to that (with metal frames, alas) when I was a kid, but eventually I outgrew them and my mom made me stop wearing them because they were cutting off blood circulation to my brain.  By that time, of course, the powers that be had decided that round lenses were "out," and the best I could find anywhere were a pair in that oblong egg-shape that I think is exclusive to glasses frames.  I have borne a grudge against the glasses industry ever since.  Just say no to corporate eyewear, people!

Of course, I haven't worn glasses in a non-hung-over state since I was fourteen, so it's kind of moot now, but if they brought back the Truman glasses I might just buy a pair anyway, just to make a statement.  Those things were bitchin'.

I'm pretty sure I saw something in the paper last year about her getting married.  One could protest about "beards" and all, but this is the SFO Bay Area - if she wanted to be a harem owning diesel dyke, no one would think it improper.

Although it would be pretty hot.

Re: Oh Noes...

I had a girl friend in 1988 who worked in daycare when uni was out and she picked it up from the little kids. Her common habit to a thing that someone was maybe overacting to was to press both hands to her cheeks and say, in imitation of a childs voice, 'Oh Noes. Why did [blank] have to happen?'. That phrase has been used all over the interwebs for as long as I know of, and everytime I read it I hear it in her voice.

The memory associated with the phrase is nice but a little bitter-sad for me. I'm sure there's a good sturdy german word for that feeling.

Actually, to drag this thread a little more off-topic, I know there to be a good Japanese word for this feeling: natsukashii, an adjective referring to something that creates feelings of nostalgia, in a wistful, sad sort of way. It can be used for things that are happy, but typically there's this undertone of "ah, those were the good old days, and we are less for lacking that now."

LAST OT THING: I wonder if anyone has come out with cake toppers appropriate for this kind of thing? Having a girl figure in a pant suit to put on top would be a seller, for example. I know we didn't find any in our attempts.

Aparently there are lots of them. (http://www.helyn.com/lesbian_wedding_cake_toppers.htm)  The one I don't get it the one with three people "Couple # ss802-1" which appears to be a guy, a women in a suit and a teenage girl.  I don't know a lot about Mormons, and for some reason that is the only explaination I can come up with.

Edit:  Wait, I was just looking at it again, and I noticed the teen bride in the threesome is sitting on what appears to be a decorative wheelchair.  What is going on there?

Thanks for the answer but it doesn't help to know that I missed one. Looks like I'll be obsessively checking now.

Dangity.

It's the Biscuit Bazooka episode which was on today at 11. And won't be on again for at least 2 weeks.

I just want to point out that if the scenario involves three people it is no longer a couple.

Well the cake people call them a couple, so maybe here is the explanation:  The teen bride is dead from the waist down from an accident caused by the man, therefore she is half a person.*  The man was emasculated when his now paralyzed fiance took on a butch gay lover, but too much of a loser to do the noble thing and leave her - hence he is half the man he used to be.  So the two of them combined only total up to be one person, hence three bodies make one couple.

*  To clarify:  I do not think this, I'm saying the cake people think this.

See, I just assumed that it was a custom-made cake topper for a wedding/commitment ceremony/handfasting/something for a polyamorous triad consisting of a man, a woman who preferred #####uits, and a woman in a wheelchair. That seems a bit strange, but not all that actively sinister or unlikely.

I'd recently found these for a friend. Perhaps it is the statement you were also seeking. http://www.eyeglasses.com/product/1115221498-1115221498

I do not have any special opinions regarding cake toppers.

V-- it took me a really long time to figure out what #####uits were.
Mostly because for some reason I was pronouncing "uits" as in "Inuits," not as in "suits". So I was thinking "*****-uit?" "#####-uit?" What?

And then I typed them out and realized... OH!

The #####uits were one of the most fierce of the native tribes of the North, frequently coming into territorial conflict with the Tling*****.
