Title: June 2007 blogs
Post by: wombat on June 03, 2007, 07:03:01 pm
I forgot that Mrs Onstad is a vegetarian. So that was a very thoughtful present indeed - in my house anyone who bought Bacon of the Month Club for someone else would be suspected of wanting it for themselves.

I want to slap him when he starts to talk about mirepoix, but he wins me back completely with his suggestion for the use of kidney beans. It is a fine line that he treads sometimes.

Chris seems to use the descriptive "fat little" quite a bit and it disturbs me. It comes out a lot in Philippe's blog, but his as well. Like fat little sardines or something, I seem to remember Philippe mentioning something about that and it's just a gross mental image. Maybe it's because I don't like sardines.

...The UPS man dropped a fat little package of a new sort of bacon into the rattle of all that misery....
...He was from Germany, but he didn't have a mustache and fat little boots...
...I saw a corgey dog! I'm not sure if that's how you spell it. He was little and fat and he was super nice...

Should not a man obsessed with Bacon be a man obsessed with fat also?

As a man who is not experienced with Bacon, on account of religion, I have always assumed that they are just tiny slivers of meat in a comforting blanket of pure white fat.

I agree completely with his assessment of kidney beans.  They do need to stop showing up in food.

Ah, but what is red, but the vibrations of light at 428 THz?  Simply stating a thing's physical parameters tells you nothing of the poetry of the experience.  I do find it tragic that, but for a quirk of traditional lore, a significant fraction of the world will never know the sublime taste of crispy bacon.  Indeed, much of the violence in the Phillipines probably stems from the cognitive dissonance of Polynesian pork palates meeting with Muslim dietary laws.  I have several coworkers who hail either directly or generationally from the Phillipines, and all not only love pork in various guises, but find Spam to be the equivalent of Soul Food.

Dammit Beef, you do not need to get another ring. New diamonds are for suckers. Go old school and get a birthstone ring if you must have something store-bought.

I love it when the strange continuity of Achewood comes back around to explain a situation in a fashion that completely makes sense but makes no sense outside of Ache-logic.

He has to pay all these costs because her family has been dead for four hundred years.

These are the perils of meeting a girl in Heaven.

A shame the family's not around, really. I hear there's a fine Welsh tradition whereby the bride's family kidnap her before the ceremony and the groom and his friends have to get her back.

I had not heard of this tradition.

When you consider that her family would all be zombies/ghosts, that sounds even cooler.

Ray would love it so much.

Getting to help his best friend save the best friend's lady from ghosts before the wedding.

Airwolf would definitely get in on the act.

OK, so stamped knives are bad, what's good? Forged? I forget how to tell the difference.

Basically, you want a knife with "full tang".

My mnemonic for it is asking myself what kind of knife Bill Clinton would want.

And then I rememeber. Full tang.

and in this situation what does tang mean?

I thought I saw W have good things to say about cheap stamped giraffe boning knives the other day...

Cheap stamped knives are great in situations where proper balance is not required, such as in light knives made for their flexibility and lack of heft.

Bigger knives where balance and equal distribution of force are important traits, you want like a drop-forged full-tang sorta dealy.

Or so cookbooks and cooking shows tell me. I can barely scramble eggs.

Compare and contrast Little Nephew's blog against blogs by similar jagoffs on MySpace.  The black-on-white isn't fooling anyone, Onstad.  You need hella pix in da backgroundzzz that make tha copy 2 tuff 2 read, plus some gratuitous glittery Playboy bunny headz or something that looks like an airbrushed picture of a gun on a van's spare tire cover.

As starving college students, my roommates and I went in on a set of Ginsu knives - cheap but sharp, plastic handles.  We used them for years, divvied them up when we graduated.  Fast forward to my marriage several years later - a set of Henckel knives as a wedding present.  Its like the difference between using a penny to tighten a screw vs a screwdriver.  A penny can do the job - but the screwdriver does it better, doesn't make your hand cramp up, and has that "right tool for the job" aura.

when Phillipe said that celebrities get "koo-koo on beer," I realized that he is basically the same as my friend Kate. weird.

and in this situation what does tang mean?

The tang is the part of a knife that extends into the handle.  Full tang means that it conforms to the shape of the handle, like in the picture below:

The best knives to get are, as mentioned above, forged full tang knives.

If you were asking what tang means in the context of what Bill Clinton wants, it means "vagina".

It sounds like he's just going to scare her. If he could make her stop saying "1 turn around the pan" that would be awesome.

And referring to "EVOO"

I think her recipes are tasty though.  Plus she's easy on the eyes.

For an ethnic broad with a voice like a chainsaw hitting nails she does surprisingly OK.

And yeah, that EVOO thing is a pisser.

If Nice Pete is just going to scare her a little, I'd like to see the recipe that comes of it. So far we know hands and thigh meet are open possibilities.

She should totally hook up with Dr. Girlfriend.

Nothing on Téodor's latest masterpiece?

I find Rachael Ray incredibly annoying in nearly anything she does, but I can't find it in my heart to hate her for it.

See, I totally don't get this.  This is one of those I Will Never Understand Men things.  When I turn on the TV for Alton Brown a few minutes too early and she is still on, I shriek aloud with pain. She is so awful and annoying in every possible way.

Possibly it may have to do with me never actually having heard her speak.  I just look at her chipmunk cheek grin and it makes me smile.

Jesus H. Christo, Onstad gets a tiny can from me straight from rural Alaska for this simile. Hell of awesome.

She is deeply annoying.

However, in small doses, she is the archetype of... the one cheerleader in high school who was passingly polite to the nerdy guys because they wouldn't judge her on the fact that she had a few screws loose herself. The one cheerleader that all the nerdy guys all thought they might have a chance with if she would just get to know the REAL them.

As time has passed and as you watch her in larger chunks, yes, she has become and does become a fetid ball of catchphrases and extremely poorly-advised attempts at putting blonde highlights into the hair of an Italian woman in her later thirties...

But for Guys Of A Nerd Persuasion, she is and will always be the one cute girl in high school who occasionally laughed at our nerd jokes and therefore as long as we only see her in small doses, we will lust for her forever. It is that simple.

We are that simple.

The key to understanding men is to not overthink the situation.

Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, and sometimes this is in a good way and sometimes this is in a bad way, the most obvious explanation, the suspiciously almost-too-easy explanation of our motivations will be the correct interpretation.

Don't outthink the room trying to figure out a dude.

The first uncomplicated theory you come up with will probably be the truth.

The first uncomplicated theory you come up with will probably be the truth.

You say this but...

A. The only uncomplicated theory I could come up with was 'she has a (female sex organ which board filters won't let me type),' which doesn't adequately distinguish her from anyone else,

B. Your theory is pretty damn complicated itself. But it kind of makes sense... From the female point of view she's that kind of girl who isn't actually that attractive but is so convinced that she is that with a combination of self confidence and makeup, guys are convinced she is desireable. But deep down you know she isn't so you think you might have a chance with her.

I actually saw her for the first time ever today.

I think the reason men find her attractive is that she does the following:

1) Wears a skirt, heels, and stockings, while sitting on a stool.
2) She stuck her tongue out in a way I think fellows would find sensual.

I have no personal opinion on her.   In attempting to form one, I have come to this.

She is the celebrity chef I would most likely choose to have sex with, were they all lined up.  This is after I discovered that the show "Barefoot Contessa" had nothing to do with the subject of foot fetish.

Likewise.  I was hoping someone here would post what all the songs are, so I don't have to click them all.

Rachael Ray opinion:  Can't stand to watch her shows, but her cookbooks aren't half-bad.  She's cute, but she doesn't have an ounce of sexy in her entire body.

she's a hell of a lot more interesting than the Stepford Wife that's on before her ... I've never seen a program that's as soft-filtered and muted as that before, even on PBS.

This is another way of saying exactly what I am saying. Thank you.

And... I hate YouTube links, period. Sigh, I guess this means it's time to spend the rest of my life in my rocker on the porch yelling at kids to get off my lawn.

I also hate YouTube links. I have the shittiest connection and I don't want to wait 20 minutes per clip. That is why I have never, and will never, contribute to the "Electricity" thread.
