Title: August 14th 2007: DOGS WITH HOGGS
Post by: MrCB on August 14, 2007, 09:26:07 am

This totally makes up for yesterdays insult of a strip strip which I personally didn't not enjoy due to really really not liking The Philippe Times. Hopefully the start of a series like with the flowcharts.... *fingers crossed*

Edited on account of perhaps being overly harsh.

Heh...gents with implements. And yes, a series based on "what did you think about today" would be kind of amusing.

As for "making up for yesterday's shitty strip"...Onstad's pretty spot on most of the time, maybe there are folks out there who have enjoyed what I perceive as low strips. After all, he's making money at it and I'm just a 13-year-old hater in Akron with nothin' better to do than criticize another man's livelihood on the internets.

Téodor didn't even skip a beat at Philippe's question, I guess he must be used to it by now. Philippe in the last two panels in kind of creeping me out.

Uh, Dykes with Trikes? Lads with Nads?

I like the strip but I'm not sure I respect the inner life of Teodore much.

So, when is Onstad gonna address Teódor's fierce loneliness? Ever since Penny we had no more frolics d'amour coming T's way...

I read it as kind of significant that we don't get enough detail on the cashier to let us determine gender. I think T is still struggling with his Issues.

Shit, more are coming.

Dude, I was not bashing on you at all, and I am sorry if my post sounded like that. There are several strips that Onstad has done that I really disliked or thought were just plain weak. Then again, I don't want to sound like I'm bashing on Onstad because I don't like the free entertainment he is providing. Christ, the man provides one of my favorite things in the world for free, so I don't want to sound like a dick.

However, I also don't want to sound like a whiny fanboy who thinks that Onstad is god. Honestly, criticism is part of the whole damn game - this board is not a bunch of drooling fanboys who will do anything to make Onstad like us...because honestly, we're just pretend people on the internets and I'm sure that he couldn't care less about what we think.

I'm sure my opinion is well-known here, but I think if Onstad couldn't care less about what we thought, he wouldn't have kicked us out of his sandbox way back in Dumbrella days.

He also would probably not point out in every single interview how very much he emphatically doesn't care.  Because he's an artist, and art is a way of connecting to other people, and to deny that that is your purpose in creating it is to deny that your work has a purpose at all.

In fact, I'm pretty sure he reads this board occasionally, surreptitiously, and I wish he would speak up more often.  Especially when a strip doesn't go over well -- I'd like to know what he was going for sometimes, because I think a lot the strips that bomb are ones with really funny ideas behind them that just don't come across clearly.

Then again, I think the Phillipe Times is a way for him to come up with a bunch of one-offs and not have to draw so much.  Sort of a break for him without giving us a break from content.  I don't particularly enjoy them, but I don't have to love everything the man does.

I'm okay with that if he is.

Also: Pigs with Twigs, Grannies with Fannies, Teenies with Peenies.

Desperate to avoid work, I am seizing this opportunity to mention a recent change of attitude I have had about the question of whether Onstad reads the board. (Thank you, jl.)

Used to be, it was totally impossible for me to believe that he didn't lurk here. If there is a place where people talk about your work, how could you possibly resist reading it?  Don't we all wish we could overhear the conversations people are having about us?  I was positive that he had to, at least once in a while.

Then a few months ago I got a job where I write stuff and it gets published in newspapers. Which means it is sometimes on newspaper websites.

A friend of mine pointed out that at one newspaper there was a place for comments and I said I hadn't read them and had no intention to.

My friend found it totally impossible to believe that I didn't want to read the comments. I, of course, immediately thought of all the discussions we've had of whether Onstad read the board and realized, it absolutely makes sense that he would never come here.

I really, truly, have absolutely no interest in reading the comment threads.  When I've occasionally read one by accident because it was right on the same screen or suchlike, I never felt like it was something I needed to see. And they weren't mean or anything - Sometimes a nice comment, sometimes someone with an axe to grind promoting their pet cause or something.  But nothing that informed me or helped me do my work better.  Just not worth my time.

I had another incident where I posted something on a messageboard looking for interviewees.  This caused a great, fascinating Internet Kerfuffle in which my motives and personal reality were dissected and attacked. You know the sort of thing.  It's sort of interesting to have it happen to oneself, but only briefly. After I had watched it get going and acquired my interviewees, I never went back to follow the thread further.

I do read (and answer) the rare email I get from a reader who bothers to write directly to me.  But I have absolutely no interest in reading comment threads and such. It would just be a waste of my time and effort and, if the comments were nasty, a waste of energy being annoyed by 13 year olds from Ohio and such.

Anyway, this is a long and work-avoiding way to say, I used to be totally unable to believe that Onstad didn't lurk here. But now that I have sort of been there, I find it completely plausible.

And back on topic: I like the Philippe Times. But not on Mondays!

Sure, curiosity may get the better of him once in a while, but checking in once every few years is enough to remind him that all it does is keep him from getting work done.

I know, it's sad that he doesn't recognize our brilliance. But come on, we have each other. Isn't that enough?

Oh man, I just re-read my post. How asinine of me to say that - of course Achewood is the sole reason the board exists, but I meant to say that it's not, individually, my personal reason to live. I doubt that most folks on this board would qualify as slavish fanboys.

Bitch, let your Freak Flag Fly!
But yeah, Achewood is hardly my reason for living. I just... talk about it a lot. And occasionally have to explain that, yes, I know a guy in St Louis, but no, I don't know his real name. I know him from the Internet.

People always assume I know you people from some sort of creepy chat-room. At this point I tell the stories like they happened to a friend from home, or a friend from school if I am home.

Ash, I had no idea that we were part of your sordid underlife. Wow. I'm somebody's secret!

I also tell messageboard stories, though most frequently to Kelli since she knows of the board, and I'll qualify the person's name with "from the board" in case she doesn't remember since she's not on here as much as I am. It's similar to our BBS days whenever my sisters and I would refer to "Kaneda* from the boards" or whatever.  However, if a topic comes up with my other friends and one of y'all's stories bears repeating, I'll say vaguely, "one of my friends" or maybe branch out and say "a friend from the internet."

-----
*I did not misspell the name of smells' country.  Kaneda is a character in Akira, the dude that I knew on the BBS took his name from that film.

Apparently to most of my friends, The Internet means one of three things:
-I met him in some sort of gay-cybersex chatroom
-he was stalking me.
-I was stalking him.

My primary social outlet is an IRC server, so there is little surprise there about me knowing people through MBs.

It took a while for it to sink in to my family that these are actual people, though. And then my mother discovered a MB for doll collectors and suddenly grasped the concept.

'The internet lady who went to Alaska and lived'

This character, and a number of others, are common topics of conversation in the Wombat household. The Technical Staff will sometimes inquire as to the wellbeing of one or the other of you.  He was particularly fascinated by the Alaska thing though, because he is obsessed with snow.

I also sometimes mention messageboard stories elsewhere and say a vague thing like it's from 'someone I know'.  I'll say it's an internet person when pressed, but if I say it up front it seems to distract from the point.  I guess I lot of people think like inev's friends.

The year I got to call a bunch of you for my birthday, my Mom was vaguely creeped out.  That is still one of the best birthday presents I've ever had.  Although this coming birthday I will be able to hold my three week old second-born child on my birthday, and that will probably be better.  No offense.  It's just that last time I had a baby he was born three weeks after my birthday, so all I got on my actual bday was a steak dinner and no wine, and also braxton-hicks contractions and lower back pain.

Point is, when something comes up in meat life (love that phrase), I just say "this guy I know was on Jeopardy, he was up against Lex Luthor," or "my friend worked at the National Zoo and let me touch a naked mole rat, and it felt like a flaccid penis."  Usually it ends there, especially with the latter story, because y'all are so interesting that most people care more about the story itself than how I actually know all these amazing people.

But when it does come up, I'm all, "yeah, we met on a message board about a comic strip."  And people are usually like, "okay, wierd..." and then I'm all, "I'm really famous on the internet, but nobody knows it.  Like MC Frontalot."  And then they back away slowly, and I'm reminded why I like you people better than nearly everybody else I encounter.

In other words, fuck meatbags.

Man when I first got the net (around late 90s) my ICQ list was just full of people from the internet, that's what it was for and I thought it was super-rad. Now no one wants to make new friends and this makes me sad.

I talk about you guys to my Lady but rarely otherwise, not for any shame reason necessarily I just tend not to cross pollinate my social groups.

Sweeeeet! I almost got to see Frontalot at the PAX convention in Seattle in 2004, right before I moved to Alaska. However, the event coordinators did not provide for an auditorium large enough for all convention attendees. There were thousands there, but the auditorium was really tiny. The folks who got in were the ones who forewent all convention activities to camp out for Frontalot tickets.

I'm jealous that some of y'all got to meet. Worse, I could have met AD and his family and probably have gone shootin' when I visited Hawaii in '05 but I did not think to mention the trip before I went. :( I want to do some kind of TOUAMBICON.

I've seen him in concert twice, since he comes to Chapel Hill annually.  He is great on stage but even greater off -- the place he plays in Raleigh is a really small venue, and he sits at the place's only booth after the show to sell t-shirts and shoot the shit with his fans.  I have such an enormous crush on him that I have to get extremely intoxicated during the show so I can talk to him afterwards.

This past year I knitted toques for Front and his band, I wish I'd taken photos.  Front's had "FRONT" really big in the front and "back" really small on the back.  Gaby, the bassist, got one that said "all your bass are belong to us."  Brandon (keyboards) got a Space Invaders theme and the new drummer (he replaced Badd Spellah but I don't remember his name) got Breakout.  They were very gracious and wore the hats on stage even though it was, like, 95 degrees in the bar.

Also, the baby I am currently carrying was conceived the night of the most recent Front concert.  So I'm pretty convinced that I'm having a Bizzaro Genius Baby.  Either that, or a tiny MC.  We'll see if next month's ultrasound reveals a tiny microphone.

Legal class hard propellant rockets. Ever since the Indian Guide fiasco little dude days my oldest has liked launching stuff into the sky. Me too. Now that he's older he builds his own from scratch kits and has learned about design flaws and construction weaknesses causing flight instability or worse.
That's part of the blowing stuff up fun. We haven't been able to send up anything big lately, the rangers would gaffle us up quick 'cause of the fire hazard this year any place half local to us. Going into the local high schools back fields and sending up some C engine stuff is still worth it, though.

I'll never forget the 4 foot tall to-scale Saturn V with 3 'D' Engines. Lifted off slow and picked up speed just like the real thing. I wish I would have had multiple stages but I think we would never have found it afterwards.

Never let that dissuade you from building and launching a multistager!  I think I've recovered 10% of the ones I built.  They're so damn cool to watch.  I like to imagine the delight of kids going out to play in their back yard and finding a terminal stage, chute deployed, in their garden.  Maybe it'll even prompt them to start flying themselves...

JL, you are awesome.  I've seen Front twice, once when I was visiting New York (great timing...) and once when he came to Lawrence, KS.  I'm still pissed that I missed him on his most recent tour with Optimus Rhyme.  I'd really like to see those guys live.
