Title: Introducing..
Post by: mavies on August 29, 2007, 10:21:32 am
Hi. I'm Matt. I just registered after a few days of generally browsing around. You seem like generally okay people so I figured I should try conversing with you all. I'll try not being too much of a newbie. Speaking of which, why aren't there any? Mostly everyone here seems to have been here for ages. Do you eat the ones you don't like or something?

So about me: I'm 18 years old, Welsh, though I'm currently living (wasting away, more like) in Qatar, out in the Middle East. It's a very shite place to live, but I've got a job that pays me a lot for doing very little, so I shouldn't really complain. But I do. A lot. It sucks here.

Also, I want to delete my account. I signed up as emmdee, then realised it's actually quite a crappy moniker. Sorry for messing you around, internet, but I want to be mavies! Should I be a man and suck it up, or is there any way i can switch to my new, slightly girly name without using a different email address?

So, yes. hello!

Edit: Oh, sorry. There is another (almost) newcomer. Sorry for trying to steal your thunder, goomba! and any others I've missed.

Hi emmdee/mavies. I've never been to Qatar, so it would be pretty cool to see photos, if you have any. Also, you read some of the archives as evidenced by your chip butty posts, which puts you leagues ahead of most of the newbs that have joined in the past.

Welcome.

So the, "cutter"? "Gutter"? "That country, the Q one. No Quebec's a province, not a country. In the Middle East"?

Welcome.

PM Jough about the name change.  He will probably be more amenable to it if you hit up the tip jar.  Failing that, however, we'll just call you mavies even though your official name is different.  It's what we did for Bozack all those years ago, since his username was a decidedly un-memorable series of mostly numbers.

Honestly, around here we recognize each other by avatar.

And yes, we eat newbies.  For breakfast.

Newbies cereal is an important part of this complete breakfast.

That's quite all right.  Now they can stop eating me and focus on you instead.

Word of advice: Don't talk about linguistics.

P.S. It's actually "gloomba," as in a goomba that is sad.

Hello Emmdee, try not to send everyone pictures of your cock.

no, no, talk about linguistics all you want!

*pronounces the Q in Qatar very loudly and very deep in his throat*

Welcome! A lot of newbies leave because we are pretty strange, and tend to not put up with jerks. When we were younger, maybe, but not so much now-- maybe they change, maybe we change!
Title: Re: Introducing..
Post by: mavies on August 29, 2007, 02:32:08 pm
Kwuttar, kattar, I aint really sure how to say it myself. I usually just refer to it as "the desert".

Linnea, here you go: http://picasaweb.google.com/mattdavies/ (http://picasaweb.google.com/mattdavies/). Some pictures, complete with insanely witty title. They're all out of the city though. I've been meaning to get some of it, but at the moment it's painfully hot outside. Considering I hate the heat I'm living in just the place for it, it's pushing 50 degrees here some days. You're lucky not having been here, it's appallingly crap. At least for any length of time longer than, say, half a day. But if mind-numbing tediousness, horrible climate and mostly awful people is your idea of a good time, you'll love it.

Gloomba, that is awesome. Gloomba! Colour me impressed. I couldn't really talk about linguistics even if I wanted to though, as I'm fairly clueless about it. I could try, but i'd just offend you intellectual types with my ignorance. Linguinorance?

I'll just stick to plain Matt, then.. Mavies is all fine and dandy 'til I forget thats what I've called myself and stop answering to it. I get confused enough when people call me Matthew. I'd still tip if I had a paypal account. Or even a credit card at all.

You wouldn't want to eat me, there's practically nothing there to eat. Be lucky to get a mouthful before you were chewing bone. Plus, all them chip butties've probably made me all bland and starchy. Milk'd be no good, try some gravy maybe?

I shall not be a jerk! At least, not intentionally. And not unless you're also a jerk. I think i can put up with a little strange if you can put up with a little jerk?

(And Doc, no worries. My (other) bone is my own business. I'd charge you for pictures, or at least make you take me out for dinner first)

I like this one.

Agreed.

Matt, is that you cuddling that giraffe?  Also, what about they lack of eyebrows?  I imagine cruel joke, drunken bet or illness?  I hope it's one of the first two.

Hey since you're from Wales, and Beef's girl Molly is from Wales, what is your take on how Onstad writes her?
Title: Re: Introducing..
Post by: mavies on August 29, 2007, 03:57:49 pm
I think that's the first time anyone's ever referred to the giant line of fur above my eyes as a lack of eyebrows. They're actually quite massive, bordering on a unibrow. Maybe you're looking at the bald guy in the other album? That's steve, and it's illness. alopecia. Poor guy used to have flowing locks back in the day. It still grows, but very patchily so he shaves it. I'm the hairy giraffe-cuddler. I found that thing in a shop out here and was physically unable to not buy it. A giant stuffed giraffe. I think, deep down, it's every mans dream to own such a thing.

Molly is lovely. I think that's pretty separate to her being Welsh though. I haven't noticed much.. Welshness(?) to her, really. I wish the girls I know back home were half as nice as her. But I don't have a crush on a cartoon cat, no siree..

I thank the Lord I'm not actually in Wales, if that counts. Lovely place, shame about the people. It aint that bad, really, I suppose. It's just I went back there for a holiday a few weeks ago, and left badly disillusioned. Being welsh is quite neat, though. Rich cultural heritage and all that. Also being able to pronounce the awesome place names. Llanelli? Caerdydd? Rhydycar? Hells yeah. Only problem is the constant nagging feeling that you're somehow getting shafted by the english.

I like this one too! This many?

Tom Jones? Anthony Hopkins? (Not busting your balls.)

I decided to see who else (some obvious, I guess):

Terry Jones, Christian Bale, TE Lawrence, Spencer Davis, Andy Fairweather-Low, Roger Glover, John Cale, Lem-fuck*ng-my, Skip James, William Williams Pantycelyn (OK, I just liked the name), Bertrand Russell, Ken Follett, Dick Francis, Roald Dahl, Martin Amis, Ivor Novello (like this name too, but I've heard of him).

That's solid, I'd say. How did I not know Lemmy is Welsh?

My Welsh knowledge is that it is the West Virginia of England. A lot of coal, a lot of booze and drug use. Small villages of hardworking people who speak a dialect completely alien to the surrounding area. Curious facts: I do believe that Wales is the top heroine heroin using country in the world, and I once read a BBC article that said the police in some cities carry mops and buckets that are handed to drunk people who vomit on the streets.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. Except the vomit bit, it never stops raining long enough to need to be washed away. Lots of sheep, too. And male voice choirs. Just don't think too much into the last two.

Hardly any one down south can actually speak the language though - bloody English saw to that. Bastards. Mind you, it's probably for the best. We named a place Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll llantysiliogogogochuchaf, for christ's sake. We had to be stopped. From what I gather we might as well be speaking another language, the accent is fairly unintelligible if spoken right. That is, ear-scorchingly fast and thick as a cyntaff swede.

Lemmy is welsh? Fuck yeah, I did not know that. Ah, wait. He was just raised there, according to wikipedia. But still, that makes the country an order of mangnitude more badass.

The Super Furry Animals, for lack of a better phrase, fuck*ng RULE. Welsh music is pretty damn good, it must be said. Mclusky, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and (mmm) Cerys Matthews. But then, we did spawn the likes of funeral for a friend, lostprophets and bullet for my valentine and that guy from steps, so I guess we do have a lot to make up for. Tom Jones has my vote for ultimate lord of all creation.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci are okay, but SFA is fuck*ng amazing.  I thing being able to understand Mwng would ruin it.  Smoking is a song I wish I had written.  When I am drunk I like to keep it short.

I don't think I'm physically able to keep it short. I start writing then the next thing I know I've got 5 paragraphs sitting there looking at me all puppy-dog eyed so I can't delete them.

You heard any of Gruff Rhys's solo stuff? Or Acid Casuals, Cian Ciaran's (the keyboardist) band? Both highly recommended. Not as good as the Super Furries, but we both know that aint possible.

How difficult would it be for a non-native speaker to learn Welsh?  I know Rosetta Stone offers courses and I've seen other tapes/books/etc.  Anyone?  I'm sure it wouldn't last long because there'd be no one to converse with (at least probably not in Ohio), but I'd like to learn a little.

Why what the hell is wrong with you? Have you heard welsh? its a concoction of throat noises and streams of consonants. I taught myself basic welsh over a summer. The hardest part is learning the non-intuitive pronunciations of various letter combinations.

I'm.. I'm not a native speaker. I can't even speak it at all, really.. I get the grammar and pronounciation, it's the actual words I don't know. Six years of welsh lessons in school only taught me that my welsh teacher was very boring to try listening to, and that she hated being called a "gog". She looked like an iguana, too.

<Edited to actually answer the damn question>No! It shouldn't be too hard, providing you can get your tongue around all the crazy sounds and actually find someone to talk to it in. There's some pretty strange nuances to it though, words affecting each other in ways they shouldn't in any language which people speak to actually communicate in and other assorted linguistical illogicalities.

Ah... jeeze.. costumes.  Maybe cause I work in theatre, but sex costumes are a total turn off to me.  I mean, come on... did you even listen to the accent tapes I gave you?  What's your character's underlying objective - "fuck*ng" is such a surface motivation.  Look, this just won't happen until you learn your lines.  And where's the costume designer?  I mean, this vinyl doesn't even sort of look like leather.

Awp!

Masterbation is seriously underrated.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing it yourself.  When I think of all the unpleasant men and womenfolk I could have slept with in university, I'm extremely, extremely glad I didn't do it with them.  Random throw-away sex is not worth the amount of work and potential risk as far as I'm concerned.  Especially when you could be investing that time in really, really mastering your own body.

Well, I am relieved that even if you aren't getting laid you are developing a drinking problem. Good on you, man.

Meaningless throwaway sex (IMHO) can still be pretty fun if you are safe.

Ah... jeeze..

OK, see, I love being married to an actor.  "Can you be Antonio tonight, sweetie?"  "But of course, mi amor.  Como estas?  Me gusta el sexo."  It's like that scene from A giraffe Called Wanda.  I'm a sucker for accents.  I got excited watching Good Will Hunting.  And Pedro is a man of a million voices.

I'm usually the one in costume, though.

That would be for the win, folks.

I'm quite proud, if a little scared, at how my introductory thread has turned out. I'd be a lot happier with my life it contained anywhere near as much sex as there is talk about it going on here. Masturbation is fine, providing there is even the remotest possibly of anything else. Which.. there aint.

see, that would require me to...

to have a... to be doing...

ok basically that would require me to get laid is what I am saying.

This is reminding me about that one discussion in that one Kevin Smith movie (dammit which one was it?) where one character is talking about how Superman can't have sex with Lois Lane because it would kill her. Way to go, inev, for taking the high road. That being said, having a little random sex in the college years isn't bad. It's when that's all you do that it becomes something that lands you in the doctor's office getting the bad news.

He'd have to wear a kryptonite condom. But that would kill him.

How old are you, where do you live, and what are you comfortable with?

Wait, this should probably have been a PM.

Larry Niven wrote a whole big essay about possible problems with Superman having sex with his leading lady.

including: he uses one variety of kryptonite to temporarily turn off his powers, and then the super-sperm bust out of her uterus, after every single one of them penetrates the membrane of the egg, killing it.

speaking of Super-Sperm, Sugarhill Gang are coming to my school. It is going to be... Delightful.

I had a thought in my head that Jason Lee said it, but of course he was in 90% of Smith's movies, so...

I really liked him as an actor until I found out he was a Scientologist.

If it makes ya feel any better, he doesn't seem to be one of the pushy ones, from what I've dealt with him and what I've heard second-hand.

lfm bringing the INSIDE INFORMATION! <adds two points>

That does make me feel better. I stopped listening to Beck for a while for the same reason, but got over it. Still won't watch a Tom Cruise movie, and Travolta gives me the creeps too. But Beck was born into it, and if he's trying to convert people, none of us seem to have figured it out. At first I thought it was just Scientology bias, but then I realized I wouldn't watch a movie that Kirk Cameron was in, either.
