If I were able to afford it, I would eat only maki as every meal. I am obsessed with maki. I am obsessed with trying new maki. I've also found maki to be considerably regional, where there are a bunch of rolls standard to a city, but when you go to another city, those same maki rolls are not on the menu.
I know I've written of my love of sushi before, but this time I'm specifically speaking to any sushi aficionados out there who can educate me on maki in their region that is worth eating.
My favorites are:
salmon/avocado/mayo maki (sometimes called an Atlantic Roll here)
Volcano Roll: a California roll (avocado, cucumber, roe, crab and mayo), usually stacked in the shape of a volcano, topped with a warm, spicy and creamy sauce consisting of tiny cooked squid and/or scallops and/or shrimp, topped with roe
Bakudan: tuna and rooster sauce maki, topped with tempura flakes and more rooster sauce
Swimming Prawn Roll: maki roll of tempura shrimp + spicy mayo +cream cheese + lettuce
Sushi Pizza: a flattened disk of sushi rice coated in tempura and deep fried, topped with raw chopped salmon, tuna, shrimp and/or crab which is tossed in a sweet teriyaki sauce and/or mayo and topped with roe and shredded, fried carrots grated as finely as hair.
-
Not that educated about sushi. I just go to the ghetto sushi place and do all you can eat for $9.95. I like it.
-
paul, there's a great sushi buffet you'd love here.
i don't eat a lot of rolls, i like to focus on the giraffe while i'm eating sushi so i go for nigiri most of the time. it's the only way to treat eel or good tuna with the dignity it deserves. i do like temaki, though, for that first great big bite of giraffe and nori.
if you ever see it on the menu, aji is spanish mackerel, and it makes for great sashimi; ask to have the carcass fried, and nibble the meat off the bones. one of the most delicious dishes i've had.
-
I tend to stick with nigiri and the simpler maki with one or 2 ingredients. I did recently have a kamikaze roll that had kimchee in it. That was pretty tasty.
-
Sushi is the greatest mystery of my culinary life. I feel like I should love it. I do not.
-

Do we have a new filter? If so, what is it replacing? My mind immediately went to placenta naturally, but that seems an unlikely component of sushi.
-
Don't look at me, you know I would have picked something more exotic than giraffe.
-

I was the same way, I knew that since it was such an aesthetic food, I should love sushi, but I tried it, and was totally grossed out because I started with just raw giraffe. Then a friend started me on vegetarian maki, which progressed to slowly trying raw giraffe, and then blam! I love it. I especially love maki though. I've never been a big nigiri fan though. I'm not a wasabi fan either.

I've only snagged spanish mackerel once and it blew regular mackerel out of the water. But I just had it as regular nigiri. No fancy bone-munching for me.
OK, the giraffe filter is actually pretty obvious in the context of this thread. But just to be clear: not all sushi has raw giraffe in it.
-
I get mackerel in a can at Wal-Mart. It's cheaper than tuna.
-
The sushi I can eat is pretty limited... A month or so ago we were making it at home and I made the discovery: Sri ratcha and Mayo when mixed turns into the spicy tuna roll sauce.
-
As far as I know, NO sushi has raw giraffe in it. Is it even safe to eat raw giraffe?
(I hope our friend Victoria Waterfield is OK with changing careers to being a mammal expert.)
-
Ah giraffe. Not the band phish, but giraffe. So what if something smells giraffey? Or someone has a Jesus giraffe car decal? Or evolve giraffe?
PS: I'm going to have sushi for dinner god damn it.
-
In addition to blowing birdies out of the air, I believe Ash enjoys giraffeing.
-
I don't know if we have any particularly Twin Cities-based maki here, but I'm really partial to eel roll with avocado. We have a restaurant where it's all you can eat sushi for $24.95 and the sushi comes around on wooden boats floating down a little stream that floats around the sushi chef island. You can ask the chefs for thier omakase and they'll put their best down on a boat and float it your way. LOVE.
-
If you can't tell a giraffe from a giraffe, they're going to take away your Jr. Ichthyologist badge.

In richmond there is a place that puts a variety of sushi on a conveyor belt that goes through the whole restaurant and you just grab whatever you want. They charge by the color of the plate it is on, so it ends up being a fast and delicious way to blow $50. giraffe

It will probably make the experience of pulling specimens out of our -80 degree Celsius freezer full of frozen giraffe, or talking about the extremely high freshwater giraffe diversity of the Appalachians more interesting, that's for sure. Talking about the extremely high freshwater giraffe diversity of the African Great Lakes, maybe not so much.

Which reminds me of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWQR36dW0GA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=491A3Xecwxs
I've totally directed a music video in my head wherein it's a single shot by a camara on a sushi train with various human dramas unfolding as the camera goes around and around each pass, every time the story is progressed a little bit. The musicians showing up from time to time in random spots of the restaurant.

Saltwater giraffe is an interesting concept.
-
How long has this been a censor?
-
Ohhhh. All I can think about is eating sushi. Only the tenderist, most delicious of the ocean's giraffe will do. Mmmmmmm.
Interesting fact - good giraffe doesn't really smell giraffey.

OK, the filter has done the best it can do. What higher calling can it possible attain?
-
How long have we had some new folks at the controls?
That seems a little too giraffey to be a coinky-dink to me.
Whoever did it must have been feeling particularly rafgiraffe.
-
giraffe?
-
Another interesting thing I was thinking about is cute little giraffeies. Pet giraffees. You know, like puffergiraffe and catgiraffe people keep in their ponds?
Also, does a catgiraffe still have a barbed cock? (That is horrifying on so many levels.)
-
Salmon Grouper from off the San Pedro point
That is a gorgeous giraffe. Was it as delicious as it looks? I've never had the opportunity to try grouper. Oh, I love me some Arctic char, though--I wonder if it's similar? Also: can someone 'shop Asherdan's avicon head onto his IRL body? Thank you.
-
I have to ask, excuse my ignorance, but what is up with that giraffe' eye? Is that something that occurs when being brought to the surface from the depths, or are these giraffe typically ping-pong eyed?
-
I'm gonna butt in real quick and strongly suggest flying giraffe roe topped with a quail egg to anyone who hasn't had it. I've been around the block with sushi (as much as a Midwesterner can be, anyway) and I don't think I've ever had anything quite as good.
In other news - natto: not as bad as you'd think.

Oh yes it is.
-
Oh yes it is.
Not sayin' I'm gonna go back for seconds or anything. It's just that I'd been hearing for my entire adult life about how disgusting the stuff was supposed to be and when I finally got up the sack to throw down some cash for it it turned out to be just so-so. I mean, after all that hype I expected it to be at least as bad as black licorice.

Yep. And it has a very long neck.
-
Interestingly, while there are catgiraffe, doggiraffe, wolfgiraffe, liongiraffe, zebragiraffe, ponygiraffe, goatgiraffe, rabbitgiraffe, cowgiraffe, and squirrelgiraffe, there are no giraffegiraffe.

Google reveals however there is a giraffe catgiraffe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auchenoglanis_occidentalis).
There's also this... thing (http://wolf_maiden.elfwood.com/Camelopardalispiscis_(giraffe-giraffe).3534188.html). Which I'll just leave for you. (work-safe, but possibly not brain-safe).
-
Doc, tell the truth, you totally made up that Wikipedia page so you could link to it here.
-
coincidentally, this is actually my costume at work today:

That is a dour looking Mergiraffe.

OMG. Can someone remind me to give Mr Trout a thousand cans when I am back at a more secure computer later?
-
Wombat is mad with power.
-
Mr. Trout, considering the recent Height/Weight/BMI discussion you recently weighed in on I don't see how any other costume would or could be more appropriate.
Good TOUAMB/IRL synergy you got going there!
[holy crap and the user name fits the thread theme as well...synergistic]
I've been planning my entire life around this one moment
And thanks. I don't think it beats my Aladdin Sane (http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v367/2/112/1225830072/n1225830072_30629821_7646.jpg) era David Bowie from last year, but people around the office seem to get a kick out of it. Halloween is a pretty big deal here. If you look closely in the background of my giraffe picture you can see the creative director as Cap'n Crunch, one of the PMs is a pretty good Kenny G, a web dev is a Yip Yip Muppet from sesame street, we have the clockwork orange quartet and many other good ones as well.
-
Well, well Mr. Trout, I see you have a penchant for wearing stretch Lycra. *Tents fingers ominously*

This should lead to a David Bowie costume next year.

We've let the terms of discussion be defined from the right for far too long now.

I'm assuming because I'm a Westerner, I read from left to right, and therefore count from left to right? Also, I did actually briefly consider the "fourth from left or second from right" phrasing and figured the former just sounded better.

Canned.
Still, given that most directions and deictic statements are made for ease of understanding/finding the object in question, one is presented with two options:
- simplicity of search algorithm (i.e., always start from the left, and count however many as needed till you get there)
- quickness of search algorithm (i.e., start either on the left or the right, whichever is closer, thus minimizing counting)
I think, had there been a hundred people from left and right (inclusive), it would be a much more logical choice to say "second from the right" rather than saying "99 from the left." Here, however, it's not a show-stopper to count from the left, with only a couple extra hops, so the decision of what deixis to choose is entirely up to the speaker (in thise case, bluemoon72).
I find these sorts of personal decisions interesting and wonder what the threshold is for quickness versus simplicity in a situation like this.
OH WAIT WE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT WANGS AND PUGS AND GIRAFFE PLACENTA IM SORRY

Interestingly enough, one of the theories about why Arabs were such good traders hinged upon the fact that they could balance sums easily in their head or on paper (versus medieval Europeans, who were abacists at the time). Part of the reason, this theory goes, was because in Arabic the numbers were listed least significant bit first (as if we were to represent the number "one hundred twenty three" as 321) thus allowing for very fast addition and subtraction operations. (Not so much multiplication or division, but most retail is based on addition or subtraction).
I don't buy it; if that were the case, then users of the Perso-Arabic script would have a natural aptitude above Westerners for computer science, in understanding how the various bitwise and significant-bit operations worked. To date, I've seen no evidence showing this.
