I don't know why he changed the alt text to tell us the dumb date it first ran. I had to click the old date to read what the alt text was that day (it was great).
I just subscribed to serializer to read those old things and complete my Achewood education. I just got to the new year's resolution 2003 one.
Is there any reason to stay subscribed to this thing once I've read all the Achewoods on it? I don't care about their other comics and somehow I don't get the feeling they're sending my three bucks right to Onstad every month. Because there didn't seem to be any place where you specify which comic you were subscribing to. I'm definitely loving the serializer Achewood strips, tho.

I know when I signed up there was a drop down box that asked if one particular comic caused you to sign up but that was like a year and a half ago so it might have changed by now.

Upon reading this thread I decided to get Serializer, as I desired some Achewood in these dry times leading up to The Book.

I am very underwhelmed.

There was great potential in some of it - I like the maps of the neighborhood, proto-young Beef and Ray, etc. Nate Small was somewhat amusing, and 'stad certainly put some effort into it.

I think the high point is Beef's 4am breakfast. Genius, no doubt... but overall I was left going "where's the comics?" It started with a sunday-format style Achewood installment and ended up with a bunch of Ray's dirty adventure rehashes.

Boo to that. I guess I was expecting more.

I can understand that, much like Sunday strips in the paper, it's difficult to integrate a Serializer feature with the free daily. However, there's plenty of story to riff with, and plenty of background to draw upon, and instead it's... flat.

Addendum: No alt text!!!!!!!11!!!1!!!1ONE!!!!

Also, Serializer hasn't been updated in six weeks.

Oh, followup: can anyone recommend any of the other Serializer offerings?

I've really enjoyed the serializer Achewood stuff, formica. I thought it was well worth it. I read up till the Nate Small story finally got to "the end" and stopped, I'll probably read the rest tonight. Some of those Ray's Places were a leetle stale but overall it was such Achewoody goodness.
My favorite thing so far, besides Nate Small, was Cornelius Bear's art collection. And Beef's breakfast, yeah. That was great.
Chads and Trixies. I thought that was a Chicago thing but apparently they've infested California too.

I then doth checked the serializer table of contents.
[obscenity deleted] there's only five more serializers left for me to read? OK, no wonder formica felt underwhelmed. I just started with the first one and kept hitting next at the bottom, thinking "one a week, that's 50 or so a year starting from 2002...I am flush with fresh Achewood!"
I forgot we were dealing with Onstad. If I'd realized there were so few I'd have taken my time a little more instead of devouring nearly all of them in one sitting.
Still, well worth the three bucks.

Of course, tastes vary, but I'd say you can't go wrong with Pup.  Red Eye, Black Eye is the other one that I read all the time.  There are a few others that update less frequently (Alternator, Half Empty,...) that I like too.  Basically, there's enough stuff that you're likely to find something you'll enjoy.

there are some pretty damn good serializer strips, if you read through them. I like a dog and his elephant a whole lot, louis red letter day, red eye black eye, true loves, magic whistle, lunar cadaver, monster parade...
there were some others that I liked, but I decided it wasnt worth three bucks a month, when there are enough free comics out there to keep me occupied. I now subscribe once a year, catch up on all the ones I like during that month, and then read something else until next year. I like to do this during december.

Pup is the only other reason, really, that I will get a sub to serializer.
Drew Weing is probably my other favourite comic artists, he is just too goddamned good. I sorely miss the Journal Comic, but it looks like he has some nice stuff coming up soon.

I desperately wanted a Pup or Journal Comic print which he was selling off at one point.
