Calling all breakfasts.
« on: December 01, 2004, 04:38:07 pm »

Good morning.

I'm curious to know the details of your most recent breakfast. Food, brands, ingredients, weather, accompanying side dishes, reading material, personal company, &c. For sociological purposes, I'd also love a barebones idea of who you are: where you're from, your approximate age, line of work/situation (college student, former US President, professional welder, &c) and the like. Any comments on the general concept of morning food will also be greeted with great interest.

Sadly, "great interest" is the closest thing to a financial reward we can offer for your participation in this study.

I ask this with a vague sociological interest and also with a desire to broaden my repertoire of breakfasts that occur to me in the morning before I have eaten breakfast.

My recent breakfast: a simple homemade jalapeņo-cheddar frittata, inconsistently spicy and slightly overcooked, accompanied by grocery store brand sour cream, tomato-based salsa of a medium spice level from a jar, French pressed Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Breakfast Blend*, and two hot homemade buttered corn muffins, along with a side of the extremely crappy Portland Press Herald and a gorgeous rainy day. I'm a graphic designer/almost-grad-student born, bred, raised, and living in Portland, Maine, the beautiful city with the most restaurants and gay people per capita of any place on the east coast.

Yours in breakfast,

[ Franz. ]

If you can ever call lunch breakfast...
I'm not up 'til after breakfast, and if I am, I can't actually persuade myself to feel not ill for long enough that lunch is easier.

If I ever do... Toast.
Oh, and, I'm not as old as I feel. I'm just a grouch. And I spend all my time working towards a career most people my parent's (or my for that matter) age would consider 'not a fuck*ng career'.

I'm at work. I didn't work out this morning, (I couldn't get to sleep last night and I don't like to work out on little sleep), so I only had coffee for breakfast. Yesterday was two eggs scrambled with crap salsa, one piece wheat toast with butter, some parmesan home fry-type things, a cup of pineapple and a pint of non-fat milk.

I'm a computer programmer, and one of the types who waits until the absolute last second before I get out of bed.  Luckily, the little lady has been keeping portable oatmeal in the cabinet, so I can grab one on the way to work and eat it there in the morning.  Today it was Fantastic® Banana Nut Barley Oatmeal.  It was not very Fantastic, and I'll be avoiding this type in the future.

I really only eat real breakfasts on weekends.

Canadian, about to turn 18, currently pursuing higher education, and I love pancakes more than life itself.
However, my most recent breakfast was a bowl of red lentils and several cups of black coffee (French-pressed Nabob, medium roast).  My wallet was stolen on the weekend and I just got a new debit card and haven't been grocery-shopping, so my food options are severely limited.  I wholeheartedly believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it is my favourite as well...
I take all my meals in front of the computer, so reading material is generally this very board, Metafilter, or any number of internet comics.

Also, when I woke up this first of December morning, it was snowing big puffy flakes of snow, the second snowfall and the first to stay on the ground.  However, I didn't pick up my advent calendar until later this morning, so the experience was not entirely complete.

American of no fixed abode, 21, college student, and hot damn I cannot remember the last time I had breakfast.

That said, my breakfast tastes are quite plebeian -- mmmmmm, cereal. I've been doing a sort of brunch thing on the days I have time for it, if by "brunch" you accept that I mean "a thing of some Odwalla juice with a stupid name* and a cookie, eaten during an 11:00 class." This is getting fairly wretched, though.

I like omelettes and cinnamon toast when I have the time, though.

* I am seriously about this close to boycotting Odwalla just because they sell nothing that I can order with a straight face. No grown human being should ever have to request a "Tropical Calci-Yum Monster" from another in any context that does not involve a seven-year-old.

There's lemonade. Of course I liked Fresh Samatha better, simply because they weren't a front for Coca-cola.

Fresh Sawha? Odwha?
I generally drink squeezed OJ of some sort (pure, Sanguinello or a mix) though always watered down somewhat. Though I have just discovered the Apple and Mango I think it is that the chain that took over Safeway here do, and it's rather good. Peach and Mandarin makes a nice change.
It's either that or the 'dilutey OJ' as transparent as I can get it without it just being water.

But then, that's what I drink all day now I can't drink coffee so much.

This is by no means an average breakfast for me, as I usually have coffee with either cereal or a bagel.

Today I made a cranberry and sausage breakfast risotto, which was delicious.  I know cranberries and sausages don't generally go together, but this particular recipe worked wonders.  The sausage in question was a mild northern italian pork sausage that had a light nutty and smokey flavour.  The cranberries were really only used to flavour the rice - no actual cranberries appeared in the dish, although the cran-tastic flavour was evident but not overpowering.

As for the other parts of your question, I don't really do anything for a living.  I'm *cough* *cough* years old, from the Philly area, and have four degrees, split between English Literature and Philosophy, but no PhD YET.

As far as breakfast thoughts go - it is my favourite meal of the day.  I generally eat it when most other people have already finished lunch, but I only eat one big meal a day, and two meals total - so since I had a big breakfast today (mmm... sleepy...) I will have a lighter dinner.

I really like breakfast dates, or meeting someone for breakfast rather than lunch.  There's something about getting together with someone when you've both recently woken up that is special.  Breakfast just feels more intimate and I'm not sure you can really get to know someone until you've had breakfast with them.

Also, I am of the old-fashioned opinion (being an old-fashioned kinda guy) that if a woman is good enough to sleep with you that it is your duty to take her out to breakfast the next day, or perhaps cook her breakfast if you're in a relationship with her.  It's not a matter of quid pro quo - it's just the right thing to do, and a tasty way to do it.

I love all breakfast foods and will happily eat them at any time of the day given the opportunity.

On weekdays, I always have the same thing for breakfast, and I always eat it at my desk at work--a scrambled egg sandwich on wheat toast with cheese, onions, lettuce and tomato.  I often read this board while I'm eating.

On the weekends, I usually have coffee first thing in the morning, which generally kills my appetite until noon or so, but hubby and I often fix ourselves a fancy breakfast on the weekends, even if we don't eat until 2 or so.  French toast made with Hawaian bread topped with peanut butter is a favorite at our house, as is bagels with cream cheese, capers, tomatos and smoked salmon.  We also sometimes go out for breakfast at our favorite neighborhood eatery and have "Crabby Eggs" which is crab cakes topped with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce.  You cannot begin to imagine how delicious it is.

Fresh Sawha? Odwha?

Fresh Samantha was a family owned juice company who made bottled juices and smoothies. The kind of stuff where the ingredients list is only 3 or 4 items. Which of course meant it cost 3 times as much as the fake chemical "juice-drinks" that Tropicana &c make and had a shelf-life of 9 minutes.

Odwalla is a sub-brand of Coke that does exactly the same thing. About 2 years ago they bought Fresh Samantha. It's usually sold at places like Whole Foods although the Safeway will usually carry 3 or 4 of the more popular varieties as well.

37 YO male ; low-ranking government apparatchnik;

Too busy getting a five year old dressed and fed. 7-11 coffee and a donut. Some days, a nice onion bagel with cream cheese.

When I have time, it's french toast, a nice mushroom omelette, OJ and coffee.

I tried to drop off dry cleaning on the way to work this morning (and failed; the cleaner had gone out of business), and so I stopped at the neighboring Manhattan Bagel.  Got a "Philly Steak & Egg" bagel, even though I should be adamantly opposed to such things.  Plus coffee. Ate it in the car on the way from the shopping center to the office; drank the coffee at my desk. The bagel-meat thing tasted OK, but then made me feel awful the rest of the morning.
