Making money from art is not vulgar. Art is a commodity. It makes people feel something. It raises the greater sum of human happiness. It increases the gaiety of the nation. It has a value. -John Allison

That is terrible. I can't take my eyes off of it; I know, in an academic sense, that that is a human, but GOD DAMN HOW DOES AN IMAGE LIKE THAT EVEN HAPPEN

I still haven't been to the new Wegman's in Sterling. My parents swear by it always seems to damned crowded. Plus it's like a half-hour away from my new place.

Sterling is one of those suburban places thats' too far out to be hip, but tries very hard to increase its hip value and attracts people like Pat. No offense to your parents, unless they habitually shoot people, befriend serial killers and are pretentious bigots in pork pie hats.

I love how half this thread is a discussion of the nature of racism as it relates to ethicity and nationality and the other half is about grocery stores. Shine on, you crazy diamonds! To hit both halves:

* Honestly, do we have any evidence that Pat doesn't think that things like "opening car doors slowly" is genetic? Pat seems like the sort of guy who assumes that all negative traits are hardwired in the genes; it's an excellent excuse to oppose rehabilitation programs and cultural understanding. (And by "the sort of guy who assumes that all negative traits are hardwired in the genes," I of course mean "dickwad.")

* I grew up on and still have a soft spot for Safeway, although I also miss the Fred Meyer of my youth. Nowadays, well, Brookshire's is very nice when I'm home, and Hy-Vee, while stupidly named, was relatively reliable back in Nebraska (as opposed to flaky-ass IGA and the worst Albertsons in the free world). At college, all we have is Stop and Shop and Price Chopper, chains I resolutely do not understand. I've been to Trader Joe's a few times and was thoroughly underwhelmed, although the SO swore on it for a while when they still carried vile aloe-based beverages.

EDIT: Images cut out of thread because of random moderator fiat.

They still do! And it was during this time period that I bought aloe, thinking, well gee, aloe in my shaving cream smells so nice, i wonder how it tastes! Then, I buy a gallon of aloe juice. .Then, chug-a-lug. Then I find out it is a laxative.

Grr.

They do? Is this a west-coast thing? All the Boston ones appear to have discontinued it. Also, can you order it online? If so, I may have found the SO's Christmas present*, as well as a festive treat for the college January Parties once I get back. ("See, I told you this stuff exists. I TOLD YOU     NOW FEEL MY PAIN")

* No, I'm not attempting to make him break up with me. He actually likes this stuff.

I saw that once, only with a drum set photoshopped in so the kid was going gonzo like Bonzo.  If I can find it again, I'll make it my new avatar for a day.

Oh.  Also, Pat is a dick.

and now the coup de grace:

http://mike.13th-floor.org/apache.mov

it may load slowly, but if someone can make avatars out of this I will be happy.

Specifically when the lead singer's eyes bug out and he laughs maniacally with his mouth wide open while hissing "APACHE!"

Also, I doubt racism developed because people felt bad about themselves.  There are lots of theories of what racism is and how it developed.  One interesting one is an economic theory, that it developed to justify slavery.  But today it generally means putting a race/ethnicity down by using stereotypes.

i don't know how racism developed, but i have first hand experience in how it is enacted/utilized.

I don't think anything as complicated as economics is involved. Everyone I've ever met who was racist was ignorant and scared and generally incapable of recognizing that their opinion was hateful and wrong. usually due to social support for the opinion.

Racism sucks.

Aren't we all being a bit harsh on Pat for being a racist? I'm not defending him - anything Pat Reynolds says or does is, by definition, wrong, evil and just fucked up. But by reading this thread, one might get the impression that Pat and Pat alone is a bigot. Need I remind you that Ray has said some pretty insulting things about Scottish Folds? I mean, if it's wrong for a cat to be racist against certain human ethnic groups, isn't it also wrong for a cat to be racist against other breeds of cats?

Ray's also referred to dogs as sub-sentient. But at least he buys his cars for his friends and such.

Except that dogs actually appear to be sub-sentient in the Achewood universe -- unless you count Scrambles, I don't think we've ever seen a dog capable of speech, and other evidence indicates that they may in fact not be capable of it. Many questions.
