I guess he could always change the spelling of his name later to make it suit him better.

I've um, heard that people do that.

Given that this is, in fact, a nickname, which doesn't require a trip to the courthouse to change, I'm not too stressed about it.  If the boy's father and I choose to spell it different ways, it will probably confuse people, but c'est la vie.  I figure he's likely to switch over to his first name (which is also Pedro's Real Name, hence the middle-name appelation) eventually, because it's a beautiful, beautiful name, but I'm really trying my best to avoid having people call him "Junior."

We are, however, encouraging friends and family to bypass the given names altogether and stick with nicknames like "Hawkeye," "Deuce," and "The Sequel."  "Version 2.0" is also acceptable.

Mostly, I like "Pearce" over "Pierce" because it's internally consistent.  That, and if you get halfway through writing the nickname and realize you're supposed to be writing his full name, like on a medical form or something, you can finish it out as his complete middle name and cram his first name in front of it without crossing anything out.  And also I don't want to encourage him to put holes in his body when he reaches the age of fifteen and decides he needs to rebel by dyeing his hair pink and wearing his underwear on the outside, or whatever the style happens to be in 2020.

All things considered, I think it's high time this thread were split and a poll added.

Good idea, the only time that's any good is when you ain't a Junior.  Then it's way cool.

I've only known 3 juniors and 2 of them went by JR (that is, Jay Ar). Which isn't much of an improvement.

I know one JR who doesn't need an ass-whupping, but that's because those are his initials and not, you know, short for "Junior."

Also, could someone here please please please explain "Trey" to me? I understand that it's a variation on "junior" for those who are in fact Something the Third, but... I don't know, it rubs me wrong.

Every JR I've ever dealt with needed a prescrption for ass whuppings 'cause of a problem.

JRs can be awesome:

That said, my vote is still for Pierce. Sorry, Jamie.

On preview: "Trey" is sort of a spin off of triple or, I guess, the Spanish "tres". I think card players call threes "treys", too. Treys are, in my experience, far worse than JRs.

Yeah, I get the etymology, I just... don't get the need for a specific "I am the third of my name" nickname. Is the idea that, by the third, you've already worn through both the legitimate first name and the appropriate nickname? (i.e., say, Thomas the First is "Thomas," his son is "Tom" or "Tommy," and then that son's son has to be "Trey" because any other alternative is just too odious?)

I guess it just weirds me out because I've known a couple of Treys with very nice first names whom I felt actually deserved the dignity of that first name instead of something that gets cafeteria jokes constantly.

I've known some Treys and heard of some others, and I never really thought that it meant the third. Never ocurred to me. Hmm.

Isn't "Trip" another nickname for the third person with the same name?

I'd rather be "Trip" than "Trey".  Unless I was a butler.

The only III I knew went by Chip which is debatable badness-wise compared to Trey. His real name was Gerard which is just out of the question.

Zartan, you did not just list Jim Ross as a good JR. You used to be cool.

It is?  Damn, you learn something new here every day.

I know of some juniors who are called 'Sonny,' speaking of bad ideas along this line.

Dang - I'm just posting all over the dang place.

From the instant I saw the question, I had to go with Pierce. Just for the Hawkeye connotations, really. I'm pretty sure I've had a crush on that character since the womb.

Bill Gates went by Trey in his younger years.

My dad was a third.  His mom called him "Jack Three" which sounds less ridiculous than it looks written out.  He was called that because his dad went by Jack, and neither of them were willing to switch to their first name "Claude".  As much as dad hated Claude, he wanted to pass his name along (like his father and grandfather).  Thus my eldest brother is Christopher Jackson.

Clifford Pearson is my father's mother's father's name.  Grandma was the tomboy of her family, and because her dad wanted a son and had all girls, she got to fill that role.  When she grew up, she really wanted to pass her daddy's name along like she could do if she were born with a wang.  So  my uncle was named Cliff after her dad.

I'm the third of five kids.  Chris got 'Jackson' from my dad, Danny got 'Sigfried' from mom's dad, and I got 'Pearson' from dad's mom's dad.  You still with me?  Who's that sleeping in the back?

Anyway, the point is that family names play a big role in my family.  JL and I hope to have tons of younguns.  We hope that they have traits reflective of our best traits and the best traits of those family members who came before us.  In that spirit, we want to name our kids with family names.  It's a symbollic way to acknowledge the achievements and mistakes of those who came before us.

My name is Adrian Pearson Dunston.  It's really served me well.  Sure kids called me gay-drian, or did Rocky impressions, but no one ever called out my name when they were trying to get someone else's attention.  Few people forgot my name after hearing it a couple of times.  I hope that it will serve my son as well as it did me.  I'm not hoping he grows up to be me, or that he grows up to achieve everything I couldn't.  I just want to give him everything I can.  That'll start with the name.  He can have it now.  He'll be Pierce the newer more authentic Adrian Pearson, with all new strengths and all new challenges.  I'll be Pedro, the dodgy old rough draft Adrian.

And together with JL, the little mama, and a cadre of other Dunstons mini, we'll form a whole more powerful even than Devastator.
