Free Mac Mini - Seriously
« on: March 04, 2005, 11:55:25 pm »

Generally I don't go for referral offers, but I know three people who just got a Free Mac Mini this week by using this site, so it's legit and each person only has to sign up for a single offer.  I used the Stamps.com offer which gives me $5 free internet postage - I was thinking of trying them anyway so no big deal.

Anyway, I figured if anyone here wanted to try it I'd post my referral link.  If you go through and don't see any offers you're genuinely interested in then by all means just walk away.  But if you can remember to cancel an offer within 30 days (your offer credit goes through in a little under a week on the free mac mini site, so any time after that is fair game to cancel) and you only have to get ten other people to join to get your Mini.

I've been dying to get a Mac to develop with, but I can't afford one, so this is a decent opportunity to get one to mess around with.  They're really tiny and surprisingly fast for the 1.47Ghz processor (the give-away is the 80Gb model with the fastest processor).

Here's my referral link:

http://www.FreeMiniMacs.com/?r=15810164

if you could help me out, I'd appreciate it.  And feel free to pop your referral ID here if you sign up using mine.  We could probably get a decent chain going.

Awesome.  I have TWO whole referrals now, so only 8 to go (and hopefully those two will complete an offer and be on their way to getting their own Mini, otherwise none of us get credit).

What I'm going to do is keep my referral link up on my sites until I get enough to get my Mini, and then I'll change the link to each referral in turn until we've all gotten our Mac Minis.  That way everyone on the board who wants in can help each other get free stuff.

If I don't get my free Mac Mini, then the terrorists have won.

The problem with pyramid schemes is that everyone is too wise/jaded about it. Why would my friends want to be my referrals when they could be my peers (and your referrals). Simple game theory dictates that everyone strives to be at the top of the pyramid, and so one never gets built.

Well, because this pyramid is only one deep at all times.  So it's not a pyramid at all - it's just a plateau.

I sign up for an offer, and ten people sign up under me.  I get credit for the ten that sign up under me, but I get NOTHING for the ten that sign up under them.

So everyone is a peer from the get-go, and the only way to sign up is to join through someone else's referral ID.  So it's win-win for anyone involved, and no matter where you come in you're always at the same plateau.

When I first saw this topic I thought Jough had coupons for mac & cheese to give away or something. I'm actually a little disappointed.

[edit: I always thought it was "shenanigans"]

First of all, congrats to CJ for his 3000th post.  That is impressive.

Also, I think this conga line thing has some merit.  I now "only" need six more signups (and of course those people need to complete one offer themselves, which so far none of my four have been credited for, but it's supposed to take a few days, and it's only been half a business day so far, so we'll see).

I always thought these offers were shenanigans too until two of my friends wrote to show me photos of their new free Mac Minis.  One of those friends got a free iPod last summer from the same Gratis Network company.

I may do the iPod shuffle thing too, since you only need three people to sign up.

I think that we can find a few people on this board, enough to start a Shuffle conga line and get us rolling, although of course the last person in the line will have to help get links from elsewhere.  Since you can only get one item, though, no matter how many referrals you get, I'm happy to change the link on my web sites to match the top of the conga link.

Yeah.  I loves me some free stuff, even if it isn't entirely free.

I clicked on your referral link, Jough and gave my information then clicked on the 'Next Step' button.  It took me to a page where I could download thousands of :)s.  There was no option to skip this page and get to the offers.  I don't want thousands of :)s so I quit the page.  I assume that they now have my e-mail address and tons of spam will ensue.  What's up with that?

Paul,

Once you give your info, it asks you yes or no questions.

Click "No" on all of them.

Then it asks you for "Optional Survey Questions" or something like that.

Click "no" to all of them.

Eventually it will ask you to select an offer below.  THAT is where you can select an offer from too-legit-to-quit companies like eBay, Columbia House, Blockbuster, Stamps.com, etc.  There were actually about four or five I'd be willing to try, so that shouldn't be a problem.  But I mail a lot of stuff and like the idea of being able to weigh my stuff and meter it at home.  And you get a free postage scale with a nice LCD readout even if you cancel later.  But the thing I signed up for was $15.95 a month for UNLIMITED postage which sounds too good to be true, but I guess most people don't spend $16.00 on postage a month - I do, so it's worth it for me.

Oh, also, it takes different amounts of time for your offer completion to show up in your account - most are 4-7 days - but I've heard that there's an Ancestry.com offer that posts immediately.

Anyway, I haven't gotten any spam yet - hopefully you won't either.

Hmm... I don't see yours, Max.

I'd read that you have to be using IE for the referral links to work - I'm not sure if that's true or not but I use Firefox exclusively, and the guy I signed up with said he saw my address in his list of people who he referred (don't worry, your e-mail addresses are safe with me - it's not like I don't have access to them through the board anyway).

Anyway, it would suck if people weren't getting properly credited.

Max, PM me with the e-mail address you used to sign up and I'll see if I can get credit for it through them.  I'm actually interested to see how responsive they are to customer service requests.

I tried again to see if I was overlooking something.  Nope, the only option I was given is download these :)s or die.  Fuck a bunch of :)s.

Okay, Asherday is next up in the Conga line.  I had to use their "Help" system, click through about a dozen questions, to finally get to the appropriate "I've completed an offer and have waited more than 15 days but haven't gotten credit for it yet".

Anyway, right now I have 23 signups but only TWO people who have completed offers - I don't know if that's par for the course or not or if people do not want a Mac Mini themselves, but anyway, if you HAVE completed an offer and have not been credited for it yet, by all means write to them.  I just received my credit today after having signed up on March 4th.

For those who haven't signed up yet, the free trial offer from Blockbuster Video (their version of Netflix) looks pretty decent, and you're supposed to get instant credit for it.

Anyway, once I get my ten signup credits I'm going to start sending referrals to each of the addresses on my list, starting with Asherdan and working my way to the rest of you.  Hopefully all of the signups from three weeks ago will start getting credited this week and then it's down the conga line from there.

Cha cha cha.
