Current baby status, 4/24: The baby did not eat anything that she could not scream at first. The baby forgot that it is the job of enzymes, not screams, to break down the food.

I won't lie, I didn't learn this until 10th grade.  It was explained to me by a goodnatured chemistry teacher.  Man was that embarrassing.

Current baby status, 4/30: The baby was going to get to play with her great-grandfather's ukulele, but it turns out it's made from really valuable extinct koa wood, so now we all just feel really bad about what man has done to the planet in the name of ukuleles.

Koa trees grow in the old hardwood forests on the Big Island and maybe others. We have a humungous Koa log sitting in a warehouse waiting to be turned into a canoe. It's definitely not extinct. It's expensive, and on the rare side, but it's not extinct.l
