Paul Simon Dream
« on: August 23, 2005, 10:00:47 am »

What a strange dream I just awoke from.

I'm watching Paul Simon perform.  It's not in a concert hall though, rather in the parking lot of a gas station near my house.  That's strange enough, but why this gas station I can't figure because it's not one I frequent often.  Paul Simon and his band were in the parking lot of the station among the gas pumps and the audience were across the street on the embankment of the freeway overpass.  This too is odd because they rebuilt that freeway maybe 20 years ago, making it wider.  Before the edge of the overpass made a hill down to the access street.  Now it's wider and it's a sheer wall between the upper road and the access road below.  So apparently this dream takes place many years in the past or something.  I don't know.  Paul Simon is performing a breakdown in the music where he is trying to interact with the crowd in his typically stiff way.  Behind him the guitar player (an annonymous blond young guy, not one of his usuals) is playing some jazz licks.  Simon (who had been approaching the crowd) breaks that off and goes over to the guitar player and begins to berate him for playing a mistake.  He does it in a way that might suggest he is only joking, but he never gives us a wink to let us know that it's just part of the act.  For his part the guitar player just meekly takes his criticism.  Next Simon and all the rest of the band and crew are leading dogs.  They are all in a line, maybe 20 of them, sort of a dog walking conga line I guess.  And they are all the same type of dog.  I don't know the breed name, but they are tall skinny dogs with long legs and lots of hair.  They are leading the dogs away from the crowd down the street and other dogs, local dogs I suppose, tough rotweillers and pit bulls start to approach and sniff around the tall dogs.  And that's where it ended.

Have you ever heard of such a strange dream?

I had a dream about paraplegics playing some sort of baseball thing in a corn field the other week. That was pretty damned weird.

I've had stranger. This shit doesn't even touch the "serial killer in the glass skyscraper" dream I had once.

I and other people I know have had this recurring dream where we are cleaning or inserting contact lenses and they get bigger and bigger until they are the size of dinner plates.

I am so relieved that other people have that contact lens dream.

I love the specific detail of the Afghan hounds in Paul's dream.  I wonder what Afghan hounds should symbolize.

The contact lens dream sounds freaky. My only recurring dream is variations on the old "finals week is coming up and I realize I never attended / never bought the textbooks for / otherwise totally dropped the ball on one class" saw, sometimes combined with an inexplicable "I am attending a previous level of school despite moving on to another" theme. (The first time was a dream about going back to sixth grade, dreamed the summer before I went to seventh; the other was a dream about still technically attending high school despite being in college, except I never went to my math class. My teachers were really understanding, though, because they knew I was juggling high school and college. WTF?)

I'm speculating here, but Paul Simon is a very short guy (5'-2") and he's married to a very tall woman (6'-0") with lot's of hair.   I don't think this shit means anything.

Paul, according to my "Interpretation of Dreams" book, originally published in 1900:

Dogs, large:
Quote
to feel much fright upon seeing a large mastiff, denotes that you will experience inconvenince because of efforts to rise above mediocrity.  If a woman dreams this, she will marry a wise and humane man.

Hounds:
Quote
To dream of hounds on a hung, denotes coming delights and pleasant changes.  For a woman to dream of hounds, she will love a man below her station.  To dream that hounds are following her, she will have many admirers, but there will be no real love felt for her.

Music:
Quote
To dream of hearing harmonious music, omens pleasure and prosperity.  Discordant music foretells troubles with unruly children, and unhappiness in the household.

So apparently you'll have a hard time rising above mediocrity, perhaps because of some unruly children, but, if you are not a lady, pleasent changes will come, (but if you are a lady, well, it's raining shit on you, isn't it?).

I used to go to a really great dream analysis site where you type in your dream discription and get a read out of what some of the symbols mean, and it worked really well, but now I can't find it.

OK, I get a variation of the growing contact lens thing with teeth. My molars suddenly swell and become porous and frangible and drop out of my mouth into my hand. By this point they're are so large there was no way they came out of my head. They break really easily with only slight pressure from my thumb and crumble into fine dust.

I used to have a dream like that, except rather than my molars it was all my teeth, and there was no strange swelling.  I'd be eating a sandwich or something, and all of a sudden all my teeth would come out, like a set of dentures.  It was extremely gross, and when I was a kid (~12-14?), it freaked me out.  I chalk this dream up to the fact that as a child, I had  poor dental hygiene and was always being yelled at about it - I guess all my teeth suddenly falling out of my head was a secret fear.

As for you, well, brush them molars, or quit eating the Italian Special pizza just before bedtime.

I've had that one - the "My college education isn't complete until I go back and finish high school... AGAIN?" one. My recurring dream scene involves being able to jump (usually off a hill) and suspend in air much longer than expected - typically 10-15 seconds per jump, which manage to achieve heights of well over 8-10 feet. Interestingly, I'm never able to plant the landing, and up falling over and rolling down said hill. I never bothered to look up what it meant.

Oh, man, I've had the "tooth damage" dreams, too. Usually in my case it's something violent -- one notable one recently involved a piano sliding down a ramp and hitting me in the face, which strangely enough just knocked out teeth. I've also had "teeth spontaneously crack" dreams. A friend of mine had a theory on this, actually: dreams about tooth damage result from probing with your tongue while asleep and while your mouth is open enough that you don't actually hit your teeth. Because you're asleep, you interpret that as "damaged teeth, oh no!" and not as "maybe my mouth was open."

I had one of those tooth dreams too, many years ago. I'm at a party, following my boyfriend around an unfamiliar house, and my teeth start to fall out, painlessly.  I collect them in my hands as the fall out, but I keep dropping them on the floor and picking them up again.  I drop them once again and when I pick them up this time, I see that they are not my teeth but some vaguely tooth-like stones.

I've had many, many tooth dreams.  Usually it's that I'm looking at my mouth in a mirror, I notice that I have a tooth loose, I start to wiggle it, then I notice all my teeth are loose, and I either pull them out or they fall out (either whole or in chunks). It's very grewsome both in the dream and when I wake up, usually slightly worried that it wasn't a dream... I figure that in my case at least, that because tooth brushing is a night time ritual, and one that I'm not as consistant with as I should be, that my subconscious mind sometimes gets caught in a worrying about dental health loop...

The site I found the dream analyzer on (http://www.bored.com) no longer lists it as a link, and I don't know what the name of the site itself is...

I'll search onward!
