Internet Obituaries
« on: February 15, 2006, 06:00:00 pm »

How do you know if one of your internet friends has died?  Do your real world friends and family know the places you frequent on the internet?  Maybe, but even if they are aware, would they even know how to find it if you didn't show them?  Even if they knew exactly where you go, would it cross their mind to inform the people you chat with of your passing?  They might e-mail people in your address book, but would they come here?  Would you want to know if one of your internet friends had passed away, or would you rather believe that they just stopped being your friend?

I had an idea several years ago that we need internet obituaries to let a persons internet friends know when they have passed on.  My idea is very similar to the ICE your cell phone thing that's going around.  Basically just put a folder on your desktop entitled "OPEN IN CASE OF DEATH" which contains instructions on who on the internet you want to be notified and how to reach them.

I hate to be so morbid, but this idea revived itself in my mind when I heard that Side Show was sick.  God forbid anything should happen to any one of us, but people die everyday.  For all we know St. Zartan is dead. If one of you were to meet an untimely end I think I would want to know so I could grieve for you.

In the even of my untimely death a small box within the Earth will open.  Inside are a team of trained mice.  Immediately a chip implanted in their brains will alert them to the time/nature/general demeanour/and overall importance of my demise.  Each of the 9 mice will travel in a different direction using preplaced homing beacons I have set in the world.

When they reach one of the beacons a light will go off and a scent not unlike the ladyparts of a particularly hot female owl will fill the wind.  9 Owls will then be attracted to the 9 beacons and as they perch awaiting some mad rutting they will surreptitiously acquire a voice recording around their ankles that will frighten them.  They will take off with the box trailing behind them, traversing the globe several times over as the speakers cry out "The Q is dead, Long Live the Q" and an heir to my moniker shall be named as he is the first to shoot down one of the owls.

This is how you shall come to know of my passing, and lo it is written thusly.

Now me, on the other hand, I expect weeping and rending of garments.

Actually, every time I fly on an airplane I remind my husband that he should post it here if I die.  This is stupid of course since I am more likely to die driving around town every day.

Given that I'm imaginary, I'll only die when/if the board collectively decides it to be so.  Thus notifying y'all seems redundant.

I know you used to be able to get a Dead Man's Switch for this kind of thing but I have no idea how well they work(ed).

Back when I was on OpenDiary one of the writers really did die unexpectedly. Her b/f posted in her diary about it but this wasn't long after the infamous EverQuest hoax so people were doubtful. But it just so happened that in college she had lived across the hall from on of my old high school friends who was able to verify the story.

On one of the other boards I frequented in my past, one of the members committed suicide.  It took local paper links for it to be verifiable.

All in all it was an odd feeling.  Like there was a loss of something that wasn't there to begin with in a way.

I dunno...

The Internet is a strange and wonderful thing.

But you have to know people's real names to verify it.  I guess we have to hope that everyone's confessed their name to at least one other board member.

This is something I have (sadly) thought about before, not that I really post enough on any communities to make it worthwhile anymore.
But it occured that I wipe my hard drive and similar so often (not to mention not being able to rely on my family to actually be able to turn on my computer) that something actually online somewhere on a reasonably reliable server that would, say, send me an e-mail once a month and if I replied I was ok, would be more reliable.

Of course something that would unleash the ultimate virus and destroy the internet on my death would be cooler but that would be a pain in the ass to keep up to date.

Easy for you to say, you'll be partying your ass off in heaven.  Meanwhile we will be stuck down here missing you.
