It is so cold...
« on: February 17, 2006, 04:25:22 pm »

Hi all,

Today when I woke up it was - 36 degrees Celsius (-32.8 degrees Fahrenheit), but with windchill it was -47 degrees Celsius (-52.6 degree Fahrenheit), now it has "warmed up" to -33 degrees Celsius (-27.4 degree Fahrenheit).  No these are not typos.  I went out in this weather, caught a bus and went to work.

It was basically just as cold yesterday, and I started the day yesterday stuck in the house because both my front and back doors had frozen shut.  Then when I got them opened I discovered that both the locks were so frozen and seized up with frost that the lock would not even accept the key into the key hole.  I used a blow dryer to warm up the door and then locked up.  I knew I was coming home to siezed up locks, so I called our builder's locksmith and met him at my door, and got into my house no problem.  It was wild.  This morning my SO's car wouldn't start, and when I got to work I discovered that out of the 350 students we were expecting only 11 of them were able to make it to the theatre.  It's that cold

NOOOOOOoooo... NOT TURTLE MOUNTAIN!!!  WHY???!   WHYYY?!!

Enough of that.  Actually this is a fine opportunity for me to ask a question about perspective I've always wondered.  Is there a point where you stop sensing something is colder relative to another temp.

For example, would you actually "feel" any colder at -79 windchill than you would at -49 windchill or do you just reach some sort of subjective max and it's cold capital C?

I suppose my thinking on this comes from touching a hot pan.  It could be 200 degrees or 250 degrees F and I couldn't tell a damn difference either way if I accidentally grabbed it; it's just Hot capital H.

Blimey, that is incomprehensibly cold; by comparison, the coldest weather I've had this winter has been a weedy -3 degrees Celsius. Is that the normal sort of climate in Portage? I normally associate those kind of temperatures with Siberia.

I bet thousands of kids are having the time of their lives today, if there is snow. Maybe it is too cold for snow. Who knows.

It's actually quite abnormal for it to be this cold in February, but usually we have a week or two in January where it's around -30 for days on end, and we didn't get a cold snap in January, so it's just late I guess.  It's supposed to stay this way for over a week, which just sucks so hard.  We have serious weather extremes here and it's not uncommon to have a summer day where it's +30 degrees C.  It's just insane.

And yes, Mr.Q once it gets to a certain point, it's just cold, and a little variation is basically unnoticeable.  I think of the cold as existing in three categories:  1) cold, but bearable, 2) uncomfortably cold, and 3) so cold that I will die if I stand still.  Right now it is so cold that I will die of I stand still.  The warnings on the radio today are that "expose skin will freeze in under 2 minutes," which I imagine sounds terrifying, but is a common part of the local winter weather forcast here.

Calm down, she said Turtle Mountain not Turtle Rock.

Also: sweet merciful crap! It was 64 here yesterday. I think our record low so far this winter was only like 22. I don't think I've ever experience anything colder than -10 or so.

The news here is talking about this Canadian cold front hitting us over the weekend like it's a shark and we're all in the water.

"Then this CANADIAN COLD FRONT is going to come crushing down on us, obliterating all in its path, feeding on our corpses just to slake its own lust for Yankee blood..."

And then they predict it'll be really cold and we'll get another four inches of snow on Monday.  Whoop-de-do.

I guess this explains that video that's been floating around of the guy in Canada throwing a bucket of boiling water into the air which freezes before it hits the ground.

Cort: that video is a hoax.  For that to happen someone figured out that it would be so cold as to instantly kill all life on earth, too.

Oh clearly. If boiling water was freezing mid-air then wouldn't the guy's breath have frozen first? And wouldn't he be wearing a lot more clothes and/or on fire?

Wow, I should light myself on fire.  That's about the only way I'll be warm.

One little detail I forgot to mention is that in the bus shelter this morning there were the remenants of a fire someone had made, obviously to keep warm - a nice pile of burnt news papers and trash.  That's how it is folks.  Thats how it is.

This thread does not make me feel good at all.  I'm what you might call a sun lover.  The coldest temperature i've ever endured is 3 deg. F.  I've been following the temperature forcast for Utah.  It's been in the 20's every night for the past week, until Thursday when it plunged to 0.  That's no degrees.  This time next week i'll be just about pulling into beautiful Huntington.  My version of the three stages of Cold as explained by Side Show.  <60 deg F  Cold but tolerable, <50 deg F Uncomfotably cold, <40 deg F fuck that shit.  I gotta get me one of these.

100 degrees F i'm fine with.

It's supposed to be 15F here with the wind chill.  I'm going on a 6 mile hike.  I bought new thermal underwear yesterday just for this.

Tomorrow I'm hiking 9 miles.

I am insane.
