Juvenile-onset (type I) diabetics are very often preternaturally skinny. But, yeah, being significantly overweight over time can cause diabetes too. Most diabetics today are type-II, probably because of the general tendency toward overweight.

Oh, I'm pretty well acquainted with Type I Diabetes; I worked with an endocrinologist a few summers ago and all that.  But since patients are usually born with or acquire the Type I disease early in life, I figured theinevitable meant Type II, since it usually has a much later onset, and has a lot to do with poor diet and lack of exercise.

My initial misinterpretation of theinevitable's meaning and the resulting confusion about skinny diabetics is yet another example of my tendency to be stupid.

Stupid I doubt. You're too smart to be stupid. If that makes any sense.

The bright side of Type II diabetes is that if it's detected early and good interventions are in place and followed, some people actually reverse their diabetes and get back to normal. It's a good thing as Martha would say.

Take a silly little 2 credit gym class in something you're interested in, and you'll be fine. You'll find plenty of gym rats who'll be more than happy to show you around.

Inevitable and I were talking about this.

I would love to go to the gym and build up a real gun show for the ladies, but the sheer thought of walking in and not knowing what to do while all the strong guys (who I might know) look disdainfully is just too much to bear.

Another scenario: I have a go on something and lift a miniscule weight; they do the same activity but with twice as much heaviness on. The looks on their faces make me want to die and I go home, eat plenty of comfort food and get more unhealthy.

Nah Judy go for it, I joine the uni gym first year I was here and it was hell of good for me. Plus a lot of places will give you someone to show you around and suggest a program for you, and usually if you are just starting out this involves more machines than free-weights and since the gym rat types are usually on the free weights that means you avoid their stares and disdain (which they don't do anyway because they are into anyone being tere and pumping iron or whatever but paranoia doesn't listen to reason).

Yeah, Doc's right, the head cases are all grunting, lifting heavy free weights and sneaking furtive glances at each other's groins.

If you can get in on a circuit training class, you won't regret it. That's a good way to work out and have a little motivation to go with it.

As for the gun show for the ladies - just being healthy is probably better than being obsessive about your physique. It's not like you can make your dick bigger with weights anyhow.

the kind of ladies who like me all go for the skinny-helpless look at first.
and then a few months in, they're asking me to help lift things. they don't get it.
so I am going to work on that.

I might get a job where I will be mostly lifting furniture. That could help!

Also, Hometown boy!  We few and far between river boys have to stick together I guess.

Don't forget good ol' Bill Burroughs.  Grew up right over there on Pershing.

If it makes you feel better, their form is usually awful. They're all lifting their backs up on the bench press, all swinging back and forth with biceps curls - they'll be lucky if they can still bend at the waist at 35.

Oh i could never forget Bill!  I had a chance to meet him and I missed it and he died several months later.  I've kicked myself in the face for that so many times, which is really hard to do.

Also Tennessee Williams and Kate Chopin etc etc

Dude, Fugazi < William S, I am just saying.   I've seen TMBG like... 15 times or so and I'd trade at least 6 of those for a WSB meetup, even though he'd probably just show me his guns and creepy spider collection.

William S. Burroughs did not lead a healthy lifestyle.  He is not a suitable role model for this thread.

Aunt Flo' is in da house y'all!

MC Menses and da Heavy Flo' Posse representin'!  In da' house yo'!

(Thank you mite - I will used that in my monthly announcement to the SO that I am happily not pregnant again for another month - it will include a dance.)

Also, I'm pretty sure that MC Menses and the Posse leaving my crib last week is the reason why I lost four pounds last week.  (I'm not sure if this euphemism is disgusting or fun, but there it is.)

And jough, in regard to your weight loss being impossible... well, that is awesome?  I guess?  I'm glad to hear you're on track, but also hope you're not being to hard on your body.  And yeah, I hear you on the not feeling like you've changed at all thing.  I went to the diary section and held 7 pounds of butter just to show myself how much weight I'd lost.  It's confusing - holding it in my hands, it felt pretty heavy, but then why are my skinny jeans still sort of snug?  Then I started thinking that if I unwrapped the 7 pounds of butter and slathered it all over my body in an even layer that coated every inch of me, that it would probably feel like a lot less if equally distributed over my entire self.

And for Wombat, here's your boob sting update: to my absolute horror, the boob string, which touched end to end two weeks ago, no longer touches.  I have lost significant weight, but my boobs have expanded just slightly.  WTF?  I've been drinking a lot more milk, so I blame the growth hormones from the cows.   My SO says it's from the pills he's been sneaking into my food when I'm not looking.  I can only hope that he's joking.
