I'm down to 190 (that's -10). I'm finding that it doesn't matter too much what I eat (assuming I'm not pounding in the processed sugars and starches) as long as I consume fewer calories than I burn off. I've been bike riding, paddling, and moving house (and softball once a week) so It's working out well right now. 5 lbs to my first goal weight and I was expecting that to take until September.

Now I gotta do something about the gray hair I'm finding more and more of.

Don't worry about the grey, man.  Chicks dig the "distinguished" look.

Eating better for me mostly means feeling better and having my blood pressure lower to the point where I can see better.

(speaking of seeing better - went to the opthamologist today and had an exam - I'm just about at the point where I will no longer be able to have my vision corrected with glasses - but hopefully the new specs will get me much closer to 20/20 vision - the doctor already told me not to hold out much hope for ever seeing 20/20, even after the surgery, should I get it).

Anyway, I'm not weighing in again until tomorrow, but I'm trying not even to think about weight right now.  I mean, I need to lose SO MUCH that a pound or two isn't even noticeable, and to focus on weight when I'm so ridiculously overweight just seems counter-productive.  When I've lost 50 pounds maybe I can start setting goals or something.  Right now I don't want to push to get to ____ lbs by a certain date.  Mostly because I really have no idea how long it will take me to lose the weight.  I'm just using the weigh-in as another data point so I can adjust my diet.  Exercise, right now, I'm just getting as much as I can handle, maybe a little more than that (I tend to need a day or three to recover from exercise - like my right ankle is still hurting from all of the walking on Friday, and now it's three days later).

Buying an exercise bike isn't really an option just because of space. But I maybe could join a gym if I can find one that isn't filled with really fit people.  I'm not going to join an expensive health club and be the only fat guy in the place.  Or the only *guy* in the place, as is the case with most of the local gyms.

But isn't being filled with really fit people a good advertisement for a gym?  They didn't get that way by magic.

It's also hell of such as intimidating if you're already self-conscious.

Even skinny people can be self-conscious.  Ask me about my crippling fear of falling gloriously upon my face whilst running on a treadmill!  Every time I use the gym at school I wonder, "Will this be The Day?"

Yeah, dammit. The only way I can get my freak on around a Curves is to sniff around the a/c exhaust vent.

For working out in a non-meat market environment, I like the YMCA. It's a values oriented wellness organization that is very nonjudgmental and the staff at the ones I've belonged too really want to help you . I know this because they work there even though they are really really underpaid. Also, the Y's with pools often have different water fitness classes which may be easier on your ankles.

Oh I wasn't implying anything otherwise.  I'm just saying from a certain viewpoint a room full of fit people all blowing kisses at themselves in the mirror and flexing ridiculously, while providing a sense of merit to a place, may also present immense fearsome uncomfort.

Like the queen came by, and not only did you break wind rather loudly, but you also were right in the middle of a bawdy joke to your best friend, the punchline of which you would not tell your mother, and the aforementioned Queen walked up behind you RIGHT THEN.  Then she strapped you to a chair and carted you around while the House of Lords has a good chuckle at your uselessly urbane nature.  That's the level of uncomfort I am trying to get across.

Super duper skinny people have their own issues, which, I am clearly not knowledgable enough to expound on in such a manner.

So yeah.. don't fall off the treadmill, that would probably hurt.

I have heard from several female friends that Curves has a whole creepy culty vibe going on as well, but this is clearly hearsay on my part.

I think I recommended swimming or other pool-type exercise earlier in the thread.  Much easier on the joints and it's highly effective.  Dude, hit the water!

I loved going to the gym near my house - 90% of its patrons are gay men. I could come in there looking like a hot mess and it never mattered.

In Houston I worked out in a gym full of very fit people and they all treated me like everyone else, that is they ignored me and went about their business.  Nobody at the gym gives a shit that you are fat.
