Dallas TX
« on: July 14, 2006, 01:00:29 am »

I need help.  I'm a sad little man, whom what is moderately afraid of the world.

I have been cooped up in my hotel room since monday night.   I have maps and GPS.  I can get myself wherever I need to go.   Anyone want to suggest a heading?

The situation is dire.

Ugh.. I was in Dallas once... hated every minute of it.  I slept in the hotel room window though after getting way too plastered with the workmates that I was on the business trip with.

So... I guess that's my suggestion.  Get really plastered and sleep in a window.

I don't have any suggestions for anyone that is afraid of the world, but there are tons of things to do in Dallas if you have an adventurous spirit.  I would suggest you get down to The Mecca for Lunch.  Be sure to keep your eye peeled for the streetwalkers that work in that area.  After lunch head on over to Dealy Plaza, see where the President was shot, stand in the Grassy Knoll, Tour the Book Depository.  After that, well you right there by the  West End area and Deep Ellum.  Should be no problem to find some good food, good drink, some decent music and maybe some interesting company.

Enjoy.

I spent a week there and hated every moment.

The 'monument' for JFK (experiment in concrete slabs) is easily the worst piece of public memorial I have ever seen.

But, Paul being from and of Texas may at least have good suggestions for places to eat.

Is the airport as huge a clusterfuck as it was about 8 years ago?

Over the course of years i've spent many weeks in Dallas and generally had a great time.  I've got friends there which helps, but still.  I've gone to concerts, seen The Mavericks play basketball, watched the Rangers (Nolan Ryan) play baseball.   Hung out at the Lake (Ray Hubbard, I believe), got drunk, got stoned, got laid. Dealy Plaza has been pretty much left as it was when the President was shot.  Maybe the monument isn't impressive (so what), but you can stand there and really get a sense of what it was like on that day all those years ago.  As for food, it's got all manner of restaurants, but the only ones I would definitely reccomend are the previously mentioned Mecca and Carshon's Deli in Ft. Worth.  My favorite there is the Ruthie.  I assume you are referring to DFW airport.  I've worked there, but never flown in there.  However, if you fly Southwest, they'll take you to Love field which is easy peasy and right in the middle of town.  Basically every airport is a clusterfuck though.

I would say though about Dallasites, they are not as friendly as the rest of us Texans.  They tend to be a bit snobby, think they are better than the rest of us.  I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the Cowboys.

But warning, Paul would have a great time in the middle of a desert.  Or in....Utah.  Your mileage may vary extremely.

Is there anyplace Paul could NOT have a great time?  It could be a competition.

See, I could make Winnipeg be a "not fun" place for Paul (or anyone).  It would be counter to everything I would want to do if Paul showed up on my door step, but I could most certainly do it if proper renumeration was made available. I have made grown men cry through the use of well chosen words and tone of voice.  It's not as hard as you think to ruin someone's day.  It's not something I want to do, but it is, as I said, something I am capable of.

Do you know where Paul would have fun?

Well I was going to say something like if you can't have a good time in Dallas, it's a failing on your part not the city, but I think you've said it better.

Captain Funtime (aka Paul) could not have a good time in Krampsville, IL.  I know this from experience.

This looks like fun, as does this, this, this, this, and this.  But Swindon is just a hop, skip and a jump from London, so I would guess that it's pretty easy to just get to down to London if your bored with Swindon.

And Swindon is the home to Thursday Next in the ridiculously over-precious Lost in a Good Book series. So maybe you can visit Jasper Ffffforde's house or something
