LOST: Am I the only one who watches?
« on: October 05, 2006, 03:06:08 pm »

We're now into the third season of Lost and I'll be dipped if I can remember a discussion thread about it.

So is anyone else watching?  Is anyone else addicted?  Does anyone else lose sleep on Wednesday nights because you're wondering what little details and clues you missed the first time through?

I'm downloading the new ep, as I refuse to wait for the UK to get a hold of the shows I watch, and fill them with the worst adverts and even worse, sponsor adverts...
I went off Lost halfway through the last series. Then watched a couple of episode and got seriously into it. I don't know how I'm going to feel about it this year, but with the questionable news of what the numbers mean having come out, I am certainly deeply curious, and will probably get entirely too addicted to it again.
That said, at the moment, I would probably give it up just to ensure we get a decent run of Studio 60... Think I might get round to making a thread about that in fact, on the offchance.

Oh man I actually forgot that last night was the premier, but thankfully The Internet helped me out on that tip and I was able to download it this morning before heading out.

I thought the third season opener was pretty good.  I'm never a big fan of watching people getting tortured, but otherwise it was interesting to see The Others in their semi-suburbia.

I was way more jazzed about the Veronica Mars premier, though, even though I think this season's overall mystery can't hold a candle to the first two.

I'm saving the new South Park for later.

I'm most looking forward to the new season of Battlestar Galactica.  It's easily the best show on television.

At the risk of being shunned, I'm not too keen on Lost. I do admire it in the sense that everyone I know is completely caught up in the story and every week something worthy of hour long discussions comes up, but I watched a few episodes (the first few of the first series) and thought it nothing special. No doubt that if I had continued watching, I'd be lost in Lost like many others.

Oh, out of interest, and while we're on the subject of TV:
1. Is the US version of The Office any good?
2. Is Doctor Who shown much across the pond?

I watched the first season of Lost (because I was an Alias fan) but couldn't get into it. Mainly because I was tremendously bored by the flashbacks.

The US Office is good. The first ep was basically line-for-line the same as the UK one but after that it started going its own way. Although I don't actually care much for the parts with Steve Carrell's character. They're more painful than funny.

Old Who is shown only on PBS. Around here I think it's on at like midnight Sunday or something. The new ones are on the Sci-Fi channel. I've heard it's good but I was never into Dr. Who so I haven't seen it. I've heard it's taking SG-1's timeslot after the finale.

The new ones are heavily promoted here on the Sci-Fi channel, which is exactly the right place for the show.  I liked the Dr. of last season, and the new guy isn't so great, but it is not something I watched every week.  I only caught a few of them and haven't been watching the new season.

The U.S. version of the office is every bit as good as the original.  Yes, the Steve Carrell character is annoying much of the time, but the others are great.  I'd actually like to see Steve leave the show to do movies and get some fresher blood in there.  Sometimes they push the dipshit line a little too far for him.  It would be funnier if the character were dialed-down some and less of a buffoon.  It would make the show a little edgier and more Office Space-y.

I have never gotten around to watching Lost but apparently one of the characters looks a lot like me. This bothers me.

There are new episodes of Dr Who?

Two seasons. I watched some of the first new series, with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor, but didn't even finish it. I just got a bit bored of it by about halfway through, partly because as always I got disillusioned with the BBC FX department. And while I like David Tenant, I haven't seen any of the new series.

As for the US Office, I keep meaning to get round to watching some of that. I didn't watch the UK version for the longest time, not until getting into Extras and going back and listening to Gervais's old radio show and things, and then watched it, and saw how truly brilliant it was. I'm now quite intrigued by the prospect of the US version.

This evening's one was fantastic. I cringed so hard I curled up into a little ball and hit the floor repeatedly. That is a very good thing. I'd say how wonderful the rest was, but no spoilers, eh?

Jude-- when I saw The Squid and the Whale, I cringed so hard that I slid out of my chair (in the movie theater) and curled into a ball on the floor. Also, covered my eyes.

I was pretty proud of this, and no one understood why. I am glad that you do.

Doctor who is Frikkin' Awesome! I was born just in time for that show to be cancelled and have pined for it ever since, I worship it's return, second series finale tonight and I'm looking forward to it. Ok ok, so the overall plot of the first series ended up being fairly weak but the eps taken individually are a lot of fun for me.

Lost I've seen the first two series of and will be waiting a while for the third I'd wager (which is why I'm posting in here now before major spoilers set in, I'll have to be careful of this thread) I'm kind of interested where they are going with it but I think they need to wrap it up within the next series or maybe two to avoid x-files syndrome. I'm still a true believer but I waned a little during last series, not as gripping as the first. The noises I made the first time Locke and Echo were on screen together though, catgirls would need surgery to squee that loud.

Extras I've only seen a couple of episodes of but the ones I saw were hilarious, but it's the kind of cringing humour I can't take a lot of in one go. Loved the patrick stewart ep though, he saw everything.

We had the first series of battlestar galactica here but we seem to be lacking the second and I don't know if it's coming anytime soon which is horribly unfair because I NEEDS it. Tasty hard sci fi fun. Might have to look into importing dvds if they make me wait much longer.

On Lost: Man the pacing of that show gets to me.  We've spent the first hour of 22 this season doing, what I feel is, nothing.  So many questions left unanswered from last season, and they appear to have no interest in them at all.

Also: giraffe Bisquit

On Doctor Who: I am so SERIOUSLY, ticked at Billie Piper.

The last episode of last season also had the best sassy Daleks ever.  "Your. Mother. Is. So. Fat. WHEN. YOUR. MOTHER. SWEATS. SHE SWEATS. GRAY-VEEEEE!"

Judy: What's the story with Torchwood?   Every thing I read says that it should be airing there in October.  Like, Now?  My special ladyfriend wants more John Barrowman.  She's been watching "How do you solve a problem like Maria?"  Also, I saw an interview of him on, I guess, the English version of "The View".   One of the ladies mentioned his bag pipes.   He in return, invited her to play his "bag pipes", and then extended the offer to the other presenters, stating that his hose was long enough for all of them to play.  Their response was a resounding: "Hooray!"

Golly!

On Veronica Mars: I watched the season opener last night.   It's looking pretty awesome, but the dialog seemed kind of forced.   It was over the top bantery, and the characters kind of lost their voice.  They all ended up sounding like the same sarcastic person.

What's up with the new theme song?  Also: Everyone here in Portland is just as retarded as that character.  It's good to be home.

It does seem to have dropped off a little, but I'm hoping that's just it being such a change of feel, and reintroducing so much for the, hopefully new viewers. If not, I'll not be as bothered as I thought I might at the end of last season, as there's quite a lot on worth watching at the moment and while I do enjoy Veronica Mars, I am coming to kind of consider it a guilty pleasure more than great TV.
And as far as BSG goes, I really must get round to season two. I held off watching it for so long as I hated the original, but after watching the mini series, and it getting better and better through season one, I too 'loved the toes off it'.
