My... my team traded one of the best outfield prospects in the game for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider.

I am sorry for your Mariners but... here, look at me, Milledge-less. This is true woe.

That was definitely a shitty move. But (please don't take this the wrong way) Lastings was never the prospect Adam Jones is. The main difference between the two is Jones being capable of playing a Gold Glove centerfield. Lastings has a great bat, but the dude is a corner 4 lyfe.

Also, you have David Wright. David Wright!

Holy fuck. Looks like the Twins saw LFM's post, felt bad for him, and decided to send Johan Santana to the Mets for a pretty underwhelming crop of prospects.

Way to go, LFM.

I'm happy. Johan's out of the AL. Works for me.

I bet Johan likes the deal, too. He gets to go to a team with deep pockets (big time extension!), that plays in the NL (JV batters!), and plays half their games in a pitcher's park (shinier ERA!).

I put $30 to win 20 on the over 1m42s national anthem bet. Sing your heart out, bitch.

Maybe he had some money on the prop bet and had to make sure he was under.

Yes, Milledge isn't a centrefielder... but Beltran'll admit that maybe he would be less injury-prone if he played a corner basically when Dane Cook is funny... so no centrefielder is needed anytime soon. He'll be an above-average corner infielder and he'll develop one hell of a bat.

And the Nationals needn't cry too much... they are totally climbing the ladder on catchers and rightfielders.

They moved up from the one-dimensional Ryan Church to the dynamic Lastings Milledge.

They moved up from the ridiculously bad Brian Schneider to the broken-down Paul LoDuca to the probably-an-asshole-but-he-can-hit Estrada.

...the Mets, Santana or not, moved right down that ladder in both cases.

Fuck, man, we could'a had Estrada and Milledge with Santana and instead we got... Church and Scheinder, eight-hole-hitters both, alike in lack of dignity.

BLAH.

It would be one thing to have given up Milledge FOR Santana, that I could at least GET but... blah.

fuck*ng blah.

Your team just had Johan Santana for a song and you're complaining about losing a former top prospect who's taken some massive steps back since first making a name for himself? You realize he generated that buzz when the jury was still out on his defense and people assumed he would become a center-fielder, right? His bat, though good, isn't terribly special for a left-fielder.

I mean, geez, you still have your best prospect with Fernando Martinez -- who will likely turn into the better player than Milledge!

Be happy. The Mariners are trying to acquire Erik Bedard with a substantially better package and the Orioles still want more.

This team just has no offense!

You pitch around Beltran Wright and Reyes (if Beltran is healthy and Reyes isn't being streaky at the moment) and you are left with...

Moises Alou, who can still hit when he's healthy but he's never healthy. Lucky to get 80 games.

The ghost of Luis Castillo, who is trying to set some kind of record by having an AVG of .280, an OBP of .280 and a SLG of .280 all at the same time... the emptiest kind of singles hitter along with his deteriorating defense and deteriorated speed because of his shot knees.

The ghost of Carlos Delgado, who will be lucky to hit .250 with 20 homeruns he's so spent.

Ryan Church, who could be struck out by your gramma provided she's a southpaw.

Brian Schneider, who could be struck out by your gramma provided she is conscious.

The Mets have a superb lead-off hitter in Reyes, three-hitter in Beltran and clean-up hitter in Wright... Alou will be a solid five hitter until he goes out for the season in May and then...

Nothing. A bunch of number eight hitters.

If they had kept Milledge and Estrada, they would've at least had two legitimate complimentary hitters to plug in at the two and the six (or five once Moises is down) to hit .280-.290 with a decent amount of extra bases on top of that.

Hide the shambling husks of Castillo and Delgado down by the pitcher and hope for the best.

Great pitching is wonderful but if you can't score any runs, it doesn't mean a thing.

The woe of losing Milledge is less that he could be an All-Star in three years and more that he could've been a decent support bat in 2008 but no.

No, Minaya likes his "good clubhouse guys" and his fuck*ng Expos.

Getting Santana is three steps forward, definitely.

But pretending that Schneider and Church as major-league starters and locking in Castillo long term, they set themselves back two steps earlier in the off-season.

So it is... y'know... it negates some of that Santana bounce.

This is all I'm saying.

The Mets spent the off-season wrecking themselves offensively and so the huge upgrade in starting pitching is somewhat cancelled out.

Yeah, let's intentionally walk three guys every time through the order!  Great idea!  That lineup sucks!

Ryan Church is not as bad as you're making him out to be.  There's been much speculation in Nats land over the past three years that he just wasn't getting a fair shake.  In 2005 he ended a game by catching a fly ball while crashing into a wall in Pittsburgh, and hurt himself on the play.  But cranky octogenarian Frank Robinson didn't believe he was hurt, and questioned Church's "toughness" when Church said he couldn't play.  That put him in Frank's doghouse, and Church didn't get enough at-bats in 2005 or 2006.  Last year he got more PT and had stretches where he played really well.  Not saying he's the next coming of Ty Cobb or anything, but he's a solid ballplayer.

Now, Brian Schneider... seems like a great guy, and he's a great defensive catcher who handles the pitching staff really well.  But yeah, he hits like .220 with little power.

In 2007, Church hit less than .230 against left-handed pitching.

In 2007, Schneider hit .235 against all pitchers, .212 against lefties.

If those guys are bench pieces, that's fine.

Schneider would be a fine back-up defensive catcher, he's above-average-if-overrated defensively, no doubt about it. Church off the bench as a fourth outfielder/pinch-hitter/defensive-replacement would be a nice little chip to have.

Delgado's a .250 hitter now and I can't imagine anyone signing him for anything other than a flyer in '09... Castillo had 25 XBH in 550 ABs and his leg is deteriorating... Alou can still swing but, man, he can't keep his health together at all anymore.

The Mets are going to look great in the brief stretches when everybody's healthy, no dizzle-bizzle, but...

Once they're a little dinged up, man, just stick a southpaw up there and it doesn't matter if Santana throws a one-run complete game... they still lose 1-0.
