Rose hips
« on: February 18, 2007, 12:14:43 am »

So I've been pruning back the bushes in front, and have collected a nice pile of orange & red rose hips.  Obviously I could dry them and make tea, but I wonder if any of you party people have done something tasty with them before?.

I always used to eat them straight. Delicious!

I wonder if you could dry them such as to make rose-raisins? That would be dangerously delightful.

I thought rose hips only went into vitamin supplements.

What does a rose hip look like?

Use them to flavor hookah tobacco.

If you took a valentine heart and rotated it until it made a solid shape - that what the shape is.  Or like a tiny, tapered pumpkin about the size of a grape.  The petals of the rose come out of one side (the top of the heart) and the stem from the other.  Technically, they are the ripe ovary of the flower.  They're known as a rich source of vitamin C - hence their appearance in supplements.

No, but seriously... I smoked a hookah with hookah tobacco a while back at my brothers (he picked one up after spending a couple of weeks in Jordan) and it's really rather pleasant. Nothing like any of the 'conventional' methods of smoking tobacco. And who really needs any more methods of smoking, as you put it "tobacco".

I have never used rose hips in cooking. However I would like to point out that there are several hookah bars in my city, and while I've never actually tried smoking anything using a hookah (I limit my smoking experiences to the occasional--i.e. once a year--fine cigar, and that's it), the atmosphere at the hookah bars is always very pleasant and relaxing. It's quite unlike the raucous atmosphere found at other bars where the smoking is more "Western," you could say.

An acquaintance of mine just opened a hookah bar here; I missed the grand opening party because I had rehearsal, but it seemed like a pleasant enough affair. I would imagine that adding rose hips to hookah tabacco would add to the experience.

To return to topic, I just did a little search for you. If you can (as in, if you engage in the preservation of foods via canning, versus if you are able to), here is a jelly recipe using rose hips. Perhaps you'll find it useful. If you try it, let us know; I'm curious to know how it is.

Hookah tobacco, at least through a hookah, is fortunately so much smoother and less of a nicotine rush than even a cigar. It was at one of the points where I'd just quit smoking (again...) so I was concerned that smoking tobacco would just make me feel ill, but it was only restful, and flavourful and really very nice. I keep thinking I shall get around to picking one up at some point, but never can quite bring myself to get round to it, especially not with it catching on!

I'd been meaning to mention rose hip jelly, and was surprised no one else had. I also have never tried it, but I have had a number of jellys of the subtler flavourings and they tend to work very well, that said I'm someone who by and large doesn't do sweet things at all. I'd be interested to try it but I don't live anywhere near a good source of them anymore.

I have had some hookah tobacco that was unbelievably delicious. The flavor was almost like fresh fruit, but of course there's the rich tobacco smoke and the meditative practice of sitting around after dinner and leisurely smoking. Is SO good.

What flavour was it, out of interest? My brother had the double apple which is great, and I think he had a cola flavoured one which we were just scared of. Well, not so much scared of, just sure we'd hate. We kind of decided we'd only dig the apple flavour and thus haven't considered any others, but if something else comes recommended I'd gladly give it a go, and we're bound to end up smoking some at Womad if not before.

I'll stop sidetracking now. Mmmm, rose hip tea. Oh, in fact, I have an infusion tea which is blood orange, rose hips and some other things. I'll find out what the other bits and pieces were, for it is hella tasty!

All of the fruit flavored tobacco tastes the same, if you ask me.  The most pleasing tobacco flavors are usually the flower-flavored ones, namely jasmine.  And any coffee flavored ones are worth trying.  Not that great though.

But they're all pretty much the same.  If you got tobacco, it's tobacco and it's good.  Unless it's jasmine flavored.  Also, go with the mint tea.

I'd been meaning to mention rose hip jelly, and was surprised no one else had. I also have never tried it...

I've poked through the internet myself and found no shortage of recipes - I'm looking for more "I tried this and it was good" sorts of opinions.

Following V's exhortation to eat them, I trimmed the ends off a likely-looking one and cut it in half.  I scooped the hairy-looking seeds out - the fruit itself looked sort of quince like.  I cut it into quarters, each one massing about as much as a pea, I think.  Bright orange flesh, about as dense as a radish.

The flavour was unspeakably sour, and the texture was about as woody as an artichoke petal.  After the sourness subsided there was a not-unpleasant character that leads me to think there might be more edible varieties (or that mine somehow isn't ripe yet).  I'll try one that's more red in colour.

ooh! Fascinating! Please keep us posted on how the taste-testing goes. I must admit it's never occurred to me to eat a rosehip just plain before.

You definitely want them as red as you can get them. I always just used to eat them straight; this was a trick I learned in Girl Scouts during hikes and such, where quartering them wasn't really possible.
