wombat asks for career advice
« on: March 09, 2007, 06:59:33 pm »

OK, so, hopefully soon some shit will make its way through the fan in a way so that this decision makes itself, but I can't stand sitting here waiting anymore so at least I am going to type about it.

I have a part time job that I started in the fall. I work every Saturday and Sunday.  This job has always been fairly lame but recently took a nosedive into Complete Suckitude. I have decided that I am going to stay no longer than the end of this month.

So, I would like to give notice, but...

1. I just asked for next weekend off. I have never yet asked for a weekend off except when I had surgery I had to call out sick when it took longer to recover than I expected.  I assumed they would just give it to me - but the boss's response was that he had to get someone to cover for me.  This is unreasonable because:
a. There isn't enough work for the two people who are there on the weekends so it won't matter if I am not there
b. This job went unfilled for months so there was only one person working every weekend then
c. He's told me I'll need to cover a couple of weekdays for anyone who volunteers, but one of the reasons I am quitting is that they have never actually trained me to do enough that I could cover the very different responsibilities on weekdays.

I am still actually waiting to hear whether anyone volunteers or whether they are going to make me come in.

So, they are being jerks and this is definitely the last straw.

SO, if I give notice now, it will look like I am quitting because they are not giving me the weekend off, which is not good in case I ever need a reference.

And then there is the other factor:

2. It's possible I am about to be offered a full time job elsewhere. So if I wait, I have a better excuse to quit that won't have bad future ramifications.  But it's unclear when and if this will happen because the boss wants to hire me but the hire ups don't want him to fill the job, to make a very long story short.

I know that anyone with half a brain would NOT sit down right now and write an email of resignation.  I should at least wait till I know about the other job, and if that doesn't work out, wait till the weekend off thing blows over before I quit.

BUT I CAN'T STAND IT ANYMORE.

Go to work that weekend.

Take a pad of post-its and a sharpie.

Whenever you do some work those shifts, mark a post-it with:

WOMBAT WAS HERE DOING THIS WHEN FUN COULD HAVE BEEN HAD INSTEAD

Put the post it on whatever you did. Animals, food and bags of poo included.

Get big post-its. Vary the message as the mood strikes you.

Seriously, ride it out a little bit and then drop 'em like a hot potato

That would at least solve the problem of there not being enough work to do - I think it will be a challenge to figure out how to get a Post-it to stick to a giraffe.

Does the giraffe have to be under water? Because if not I think it will become a lot easier.

I have just escaped my sucky job which I've been working at 3 to 4 days a week ever since I finished uni. I wanted to quit so much over the last few months but didn't because the money wasn't too bad and I had no idea when I'd find something else.

This doesn't actually help you a whole bunch except that I can say from personal experience quitting a sucky job knowing you are going to an awesome job feels so much better than quitting without knowing what you are doing (including being worried you might have to come crawling back if something else doesn't turn up).

I advise you to keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars. Also, do not get a job that keeps you thousands of miles away from your loved ones every other two weeks and requires you to work 16 to 18 hours a day in an industry that most people respect only slightly more than child pornography.

You work for an oil company?  Or the government?

You'd like me to answer that, wouldn't you - so you can come by my house and throw cancer on me.

Yeah, unfortunately it does. Unless I want to get fired, and the idea was pretty much to quit before that happened.

I'm thinking actually staples in a fin would work the best, but that idea has the same pitfall.

Well if you are quick (or if the giraffe can survive an unusual amount of time out of water) how about waterproof glue! (linked purely for 'easyfunschool').

an industry that most people respect only slightly more than child pornography.

That's how I used to feel when I did market research surveys over the phone. My mum was a manager at one of those companies for ages, eventually it broke her, now she works at a place that the elderly call when they are scared, she feels a lot better about herself.

My first guesses were oil and logging, based on the Alaska Factor.

It could be worse, nabu...You could live someplace where a ride to Anchorage is $900 if you can get a ticket out, and to where you have to be away from your family for 11.5 months out of the year...even though you get 30 days paid leave per year, your boss freaks out whenever you even mention taking some time off, and extracts a quart of blood from you with a fork every time you put in a leave request.

omba, my gut instinct is to let my id roam free, and to say, "FUCK Y'ALL!" and just leave, giving no notice.

Of course... I have like fifty dollars in savings, so that would be a Very Bad Thing.

Yep. Depends the levels of dickitude you're having to put up with really. And what you had planned for the weekend. If it's going to fuck up some really awesome plans, tell the bosstard where to stick it, and that really, it had nothing to do with him being a petty-minded jerk. And feel free to point that fact out to him. You could hold over and have an... I Shit On You Saturday.
On the other hand, I'd probably go in and wait for something really annoying and let that be the post-it that breaks the giraffe's back, cartilage, thing. I tend to wait until I snap in those kinds of circumstances, and then pull some fucked up Jerry Maguire crossed with Tyler Durden shit, all shouting and ranting before boobytrapping the bosstard's office with gasoline filled light bulbs.
OK, only so far, but that might give you some ideas too...
