Ahhhh..  I was kind of annoyed by the really weak opinions and loosely informed decisions, and then Kurtz comes in.  Perhaps if you've read a random selection of 15 strips, you would be bewildered, but there definitely are extremely accessible parts even when taken individually.  So in essence, there is an extreme paucity of effort here to actually read the strip before striking down judgment.

I do not know much about cars.  Would I set up a podcast to review cars?  No, I would not.  I do not understand why this mp3 exists.  If you just do not feel a strip, then just don't read it!  Ridiculous.

edit:  hahah, they are complaining that there are sometimes too many panels in a strip?  Wow.

This is the first time I've heard Achewood be discussed by human voices.  Unfortunately, listening to most these dudes' voices is like torture.

How about a short recap for those of us who are impatient.

They're basically saying that Achewood is incomprehensible and for people who like to make themselves look smart by saying they get it. One of the guys had read most of the archives and still didn't get it, Scott Kurtz hadn't read most of it and hated it, and one female cartoonist ranted against it for hours, really vitrolically - she was the one who used the "Kiss my ass, bitch, I'll be at Duane's!" example. One of the moderators was trying to defend it.

Scott Kurtz didn't piss me off. No one really did, except for the female cartoonist, who was really, really vitrolic and ill-informed. I thought they were valid criticisms - especially from the moderater who had read most of the archives. I mean, it's not a comic for everyone. It is kind of esoteric, and it is really bizarre, and it is just one of those "get it or you don't." And it also is literate, and something you have to work to read. And some people just don't want to work that hard to read comic strips. And maybe that's valid. They're just coming from a different perspective.

I actually kind of like PVP. Not love it but - he is like Jon Davis. You know how Garfield is funny, once every blue moon or something? PVP's kind of like that.

I have known that Scott Kurtz is a dick, ever since I read a message board discussion with him and Frank Cho, where they both claimed that every person making mini-comics is a pretense-laden douche just trying to crack into the mainstream by being falsely "intensely personal".

Uh, no. Some mini-comics might be like that?

But, man, it's like they had no fuckin' idea that some people might be making mini-comics at Kinkos KNOWING that what they were doing wasn't about trying to be the next writer on Iron Man or havin' a strip in the Palookaville Picayune. That most people who do small press understand it's not a business exercise, it's a form of shared personal expression that will at best break even.

We're not all... Frank Cho and Scott Kurtz, cynically trying to "break into the big bucks"... some of us are just people trying to tell the stories we've got inside us in a potentially very democratic medium. That goes double for internet comics, y'know?

It's not ABOUT trying to speak to everyone in the world and it's not ABOUT necessarily being the most polished artists... it's about saying something and maybe a couple of hundred people hearing ya.

PvP is so fuckin' by-the-numbers cynical in its attempts to pander to the cliche of an internet user and yet completely still being fuckin' Garfield. FUCK PVP. FUCK SCOTT KURTZ.

As for Frank Cho, dude is a great great artist who should not be allowed to write his own material or talk at conventions. Stick to the pretty ladies, Cho, we don't need to hear your reductivist theories on comics and/or your bad-Bloom-County-ripoff-by-way-of-a-soap-opera personal side project. FUCK FRANK CHO.

I kind of wanted to kill myself after listening to that.  I mean, for Christ's sake, I like Achewood.   I don't enjoy feeling superior to people.  I am not some dude in a black turtleneck who totally made out with Derrida.  I just enjoy things that are funny, you know?

I actually kind of like Liberty Meadows. They should go to one of Ray's parties. Truman and Philippe could have their own little imaginary party. Lyle and Dean could do things I'd rather not think about.

I quite liked early Liberty Meadows.

Over its development, it basically became a lame serial melodrama about the artist's fictional stand-in trying to fuck an impossibly attractive woman while being persued and tempted by other impossibly attractive women. Which interests me in no way.

Kurtz is projecting his own sense of superiority onto other people and hating them for it.

Also: I am now a huge supporter of a Fouc*ult Friday.

I tried to read Liberty Meadows, but it's like reading a really well drawn copy of Bloom County / Calvin and Hobbes / Some Other Strip's Art That I Don't Recognize Yet POGO.

Sorry, I just can't stand strips that crib like that. I'll just go put on my black turtleneck and pick out an ipod, last one to the coffeehouse is a pretentious fuck.

Worse yet, Frank Cho can't even be original in his fetish for giant women.  Crumb's been doing that forever.  Is there an original molecule in that man's body?

I'm surprised he hasn't rolled in his own version of Garfield / Cathy machine-generated strips or some B.C.-style right wing evangelizing just to cover all the bases.
