The chick cares about the dude when the dude does not care about the dude.

Aw, how sweet.  Kind of anticlimactic, though.

Dude, the climax will be the wedding!  Unless in Acheworld accepting a ring is all it takes...?

It's a good thing that Molly happened to put the ring on her left hand.

The look of terror on Beef's face in panel 1 is great. He's frozen in mid-solder.

I believe the "soon thereafter" part of the strip may just be in Beef's mind. He's considering the consequences of letting her wear the ring. Panel 8 is the present and he still has the ring (and the slit-eyes).

Or Molly is recalling panel 2, where Beef whips around to look at her with dazed and nervous confusion in his eyes, and she puts that together with the ring symbolism to realize what he was intending...

man.
This makes me think of my dad popping the question to my mom.
her parents were over for dinner... and everyone thought he was joking.
His mom said "sweetie, I'm sorry, but Bobby is pulling your leg. He would never get married."

Perhaps, but aren't imaginary/thought sequences usually done with the grey tint? For example:
