Maybe I'm just hungry, but that sounds super delicious.

Don't you have a garage where she could work on it?

She has to earn the garage.

Glad to see you're keeping her in her proper place.

Nightmare on Catalan Street:

My friends have been planning a Roller Disco event for several months. As far as I can tell it is the premier event going on in the city this weekend. Like, everywhere I go I hear people talking about it. Everyone is super excited. The Facebook event has 300 confirmed guests, they went on a popular radio show to talk about it, they put up posters all over town...

The venue just called and said: forget what we said before about the capacity, the fire marshall came around. We can't admit more than 250 people. The event starts in like 2 hours.

Dang.

Roller Disco Riot!  Girls pulling each other's hair on skates.  Sluts, jocks, dweebs, nerds, geeks, wastoids...all donking each other over the head with lead pipes and 2x4's to the sound of Donna Summer.

So awesome.

that ruled. Super oversold, they ran out of roller skates to rent out. Everyone went out and danced in normal shoes at the center while the skaters skated around them. I think they made a TON of money. The guy who owns the rink said they had never run out of skates before. My friend who was staying with me fell and sprained her ankle, so the end of the night was kind of shitty as I had to drive her around looking for someplace that was open to buy an ankle wrap.

But yeah, huge success. There are certain elements of 70s clothing that are extremely flattering on certain body types. Cute hipster disco babes were in full effect.

I think I mentioned once before that once a hipster-looking guy with brown hair and black rimmed glasses came into the board game store with a copy of Agricola and it reminded me of Inev. He came back on Thursday with his wife, who is equally hipster and adorable, and we played Ticket to Ride. His name, of all things, is Dan.

We might double-game-date with them soon.

I'm going to finish a motorcycle basic riders' course tomorrow. Having never rode before, it was a bit scary, but I think I'll like it. Now I just have to find a bike that isn't ridiculously overpriced...

Remember how I have complained before about not being able to find clothes that fit my 70 lb 4 year old at any price? Today I got a call from the social worker at her school saying that her ##### were too small today and offering to find some resources for getting used clothes in a bigger size.

She was wearing a size 8 with the bottoms rolled. I should have just said, go ahead and try, bitch. I've been looking for two years, you think you can solve my problems in a weekend you just give it your best shot.

I'm not sure JL, from what you described the social worker is doing her job.  Maybe there are some details about her tone or attitude that you left out though.  When it comes to the job of a social worker, I can tell you that by definition social workers are employed by the agency or organization they're hired by to notice challenges people are having, educate them on them and empower them with solutions and resources.  I know unsolicited advice isn't necessarily appreciated, but it's her job to notice people's problems and source out ways of helping. If you take offense to the fact your school has hired someone to do this sort of work, it's the school you should be pissed about.

That said, I work with social empowering familes to make significant positive changes.  The terrible ones... well you can imagine how bad it gets.  One thing to know though is that the majority of social workers are connected to extensive resources that the average person has no idea exists or wouldn't be able to access without the referral of a worker.

It's not about having the social worker, smells, it's about general ass advice without digging into the work part of social and getting to know what you're talking about.

The child on topic has some challenges that make sizing clothes difficult.

HELPFUL: advice about where to find/get help making non standard sized clothing for the child.

NOT HELPFUL: Offering up a list of used clothes stores.

Right now the school social worker is on the NOT HELPFUL side of things.

This is why I advocate drilling your particulars into them right up front. Then they can either help or toss the flip off.

Lighten up, Francis.

She was trying to help.  There's a school full of families this social worker is assigned to.  She can't possibly know the history and details of each one.  Sounds like she made an exploratory comment/question to find out if this was an area where a family needed some help.  It hit a particularly sore spot with dear JL.

I highly doubt the social worker was trying to be insensitive or insulting.  A few seconds conversation could clear the whole thing up.  And it's just possible that she may know of some additional resources that could be helpful.

Would you rather she had ignored the situation and not given a shit at all?

She called and offered to help.  Why should she expend the time and effort doing the digging until she knows it's necessary?

Smells, I am sure she thought that the issue was not being able to afford clothes, I was not bitchy to her on the phone and I realize she was just doing her job. She was very nice. But when I explained the issue, she didn't get it. And why should she? This is not a thing most people have to deal with. Clothes are too small? Buy bigger. Problem solved. Except, in Hero's case, not so much.

I explained that I have been trying to find her ##### that fit since she was 2 and even if I buy bigger and hem them, there's only so much you can do. She kept going back to wanting to find financial resources and saying, "I just don't want her to get made fun of."

Seriously? She's going to be 80 lbs by kindergarten and you think some new ##### are going to keep her from getting picked on?

I'm sure she means well, but she really has no idea how impossible finding clothes has been. I was sincere when I said I should have invited her to try (without the expletives). Because then she might get that there is not a simple solution here.

What hurts is that people look at my kid and draw conclusions about what kind of parent I am because of her size, and it's seldom flattering. But there's nothing more I can do.

The part that cut deep was when she asked if maybe girlface dressed herself and I didn't see her before she got on the bus. Ouch.
