best wishes to the new little one and to you, JL!

Today I found out that the font I use on instant messenger is replaced by a hideous and tiny font on Macs. What the fuck, Steve Jobs.
My friends had all been telling me it was obnoxious and ugly, and I did not understand until now.

I also moved many hundreds of CDs over about a foot each, so that each shelf would have 1.5 inches of empty space at the end. We also went through all the hundreds of CDs in piles around the radio station and did Triage, except it was really just Duage. "This CD is 3 years old, there are 400 other unreviewed CDs here too.... have any of us heard of this band?" There were two piles, and the Heard Of pile was definitely the small one. People who weren't there (and haven't been any of the other times we've had work-days like this) will complain "who are you to decide what's good?"
I guess the answer will be "the people who showed up and went through the 10 mail bins full of CDs. (fuck you)"

Later, I traded songs with these two rad people, which was fun. We all brought our CDs and laptops to this guy's room and swapped. They were into all this insane experimental stuff and assuming I knew about it, which I did not. There was also a weird moment where a Gang of Four song came on, and the girl asked "don't you guys cover this in your band?"
and I said "yes!" at the same time as the other guy said "I mean, we aren't really in a band." I thought we kind of were, so, weird.

now I am unable to sleep, reading some short stories, and agonizing about things I know are silly.

You are in Schrodinger's Band. Also? You are not in Schrodinger's Band.

Also also?

The biggest secret in technology history is that, for many purposes, Macs actually kinda suck.

It was really just wishful thinking on my part. Playing 2 songs together half a dozen times and having a name is not really being a band, I guess.
Also, if I was really in a band with anyone, I guess he would be kind of on the fringe. It was really me and these two other guys, and then he came a few times.

We went through some really horrible names, rapidly shifting from "ROCK AND ROLL! YEAHHH!" type names to "wait, everyone else in this band is taking Jazz Composition classes and stuff, holy shit they know all the chords that notes can make" ones. Maybe I should take guitar lessons, or force myself to follow some kind of structured practice regime.

We did play "Love Fool" though. Have I mentioned how much I love that song? So good. At that point, and I guess theoretically now, we are called "Pajama Holiday" because the vibe of that song made us think of lounging around on a day off. Also, how beautiful and classy Scandinavian women are-- wouldn't a woman like that wear pajamas?

My real dream is that I will be in a band called "Restless Leg Syndrome," but I am not going to suggest "hey guys, let's have the same name as my radio show." Maybe if I write songs and sing them.

Today I'm gonna receive the most bizarre telephone call of my life.

I am gonna, apparently, get a call from the hospital telling me they don't have any beds, so they can't do my induction at 6 AM as scheduled, and I will have to wait 'til this afternoon.

I'm gonna get this call at 5 AM, after a near-sleepless night due to the pain in my lower back and hips being so intense that I had to take a hot bath at 2:30 just to be able to lie in bed long enough to doze off for an hour before the phone started ringing.  And after making meticulous arrangements to have my parents watch my son and get him off to school this morning even though changes to his routine basically have "meltdown" written all over them.  And then I had to call my sister-in-law and my mother-in-law and my dad at 5:05 AM, and tell them that even though everybody took the day off work today, they were only "pretty sure" they would be able to get me a bed this afternoon.

It's not the hospital's fault, and I'm sure that if I went into labor in the middle of the night last night I'd be glad that they were putting off inductions to accommodate me.  But if I happen to go into labor before they call to tell me they have a room ready, they had better make alternate arrangements quick, because my first labor only lasted three hours from start to finish and the second one is likely to go even faster.

I really wanted to tell the nurse that called, "Can I just come in now?  I'll go fast and you can send me right home."  I mean, there is a distinct possibility that some of the women who there right now will still be in labor when I'm done, even if they don't call me in 'til this afternoon.  (Average labor for a first-time mom is 14 hours.)  I just...I have been incredibly more uncomfortable than I was at this point in my first pregnancy, and it is incredibly frustrating to hear that that light I saw at the end of this here tunnel is basically a glowing neon sign that says "ONLY TWELVE MORE HOURS HANG IN THERE."

So.  I can't go back to sleep at this point, I've got at least six hours before I can expect a phone call, and I'm too uncomfortable to get off the couch.  I'm gonna get myself a box of cheerios, hang around here, get some knitting done, maybe fire up the Wii.

I'll keep you posted.

I cant imagine the excitement, or the discomfort, that JL will experience today. Congratulations to you and the canal miner.

Today I will watch to see if the US and global markets continue this spectacular free fall and try to catch naps between classes.

Damn.  That's got to be the most frustrating thing ever.  Sorry you've got to wait.  I can't remember if you had to be induced for your boy or not... Three hours is already sort of scary-short if you started outside a hospital.  I mean, in my limited experience on the sidelines of friends having babies, I know the staff doesn't really take the first couple hours of labour "seriously" even if the baby really is coming.  It's like they don't want to invest their energy on you until the baby is basically crowning.

I hope you have your girl soon, but not too soon.  More like, at exactly the right time, under the proper care and such.

Today I am going to watch my retirement plans go up in smoke, I guess. Also maybe do some work.

Not smoke, nabu, a blazing inferno of recession.
Cheap homes and investments for upcoming college grads, Lost equity and longer work lives for old people. Everythings coming together.

Everything's coming together... in what sense?

The final reveal of the collapse of the middle class... the curtain getting dropped on the fact that all of these people who were convinced that stock market and real estate gambles were the best way to protect their hard earned money and... wuh-oa!... it turns out that, yet again, it was all a con for rich people to make themselves even richer off of the brainwashed consumer class's naive-rube-upward-mobility?

Just like every other speculation-driven economic crash in, uhm, history?

I hope you have your girl soon, but not too soon.  More like, at exactly the right time, under the proper care and such.

Yeah, see.  I was induced with my son, and supposedly, labor by induction progresses slower than normal.  At one point, after two and a half hours of active labor, a nurse convinced me that I should have an epidural because "you've got six or eight more hours of this."  She based this on the fact that I had only been dilated to 4 cm when she had checked my cervix half an hour previously.  I said to go ahead and call the anesthesiologist, and he showed up 45 minutes later, just as I was starting to push.  I went from 4 to 10 in under an hour.  (Doctors expect one cm every hour or so.)  This is one of the reasons I'm supposed to have an induction this time around.

At this point, having had contractions 15 minutes apart for 2 1/2 hours yesterday (which stopped on their own, frustratingly enough) I am afraid that if I do go into labor at home, I'll get to the hospital and they *still* won't have a bed for me.  I mean, seriously.  We called them (to see if I could eat something, they said "soup and toast," do they know how ravenous pregnant women get?) and they said they have women coming in taking beds as fast as they can empty them, and they don't know if they'll be able to get me in any time today.  If I show up in labor and it takes them an hour to find me a room, I'm going to be having this kid in the lobby.

Ignoring the rest of the nonsense you blurted out, I meant everything is coming together for me, my generation. Riding the wave out of a recession is easier than retiring into one.

man, 14 hours? how did I not know that that was normal.

best wishes, JL. It sucks that you are in this situation, but, way to be reasonable and understand that you are not the only person in the world.
i'm sure plenty of people would be there basically saying "KICK SOMEONE ELSE OUT, DAMNIT!"

your little girl already has a great mom, is what I am saying. here's hoping everything goes as it is supposed to and all.
