Wombat, as the daughter of a gun nut who made his own bullets (there's an area of my life I don't think I've touched up on here much!), I can clear this up for you.  The bullets you see in jewelry are empty - they don't have powder in them, so there is no element in them that could cause explosion.  My dad thought he was being pretty cool with his hollow bullet casing necklaces and key chains and such, but... um, no.

When it comes to an actual, full of powder bullet, rather than an empty bullet casings used for "decorative purposes," yes, if you drop a bullet, point down, onto something hard enough like a concrete floor, it could explode on impact.  I've seen it happen once, but this occurred when the bullet was intentionally basically thrown at the floor, point down.  Likewise, I've seen way more bullets roll off a table and bounce around on the floor without anything bad happening, but apparently it was super dangerous anyway, and lead to one parent yelling at the other, and me closing my bedroom door for the 100th time that week.

I remember someone telling me when I was much younger that if you stuffed a .22 into the end of a straw (with the base of the bullet sticking out of the straw) and threw it up in the air it would fire on impact when it landed. I was always, luckily I imagine, much too terrified to try this, though I bet it would have been pretty fuck*ng awesome. I think this is because only the rim of a .22 needs to be hit to ignite it, as opposed to the center of most other bullets. I bet Asherdan can correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks, I think, for that information that had been previously been missing from the inventory of the Home for Scared People.

...think about walking down to the corner to get some donuts and a paper.  I haven't read a Saturday paper in... months.  It is a thing I do that feels like leisure.  I've never taken my dog to a store and left him tied up out front.  Am I the kind of person that would do such a thing?  Is he the sort of dog that would tolerate such a thing?

im not sure where this would go, and i wasnt sure if it warranted a whole new thread, but its hell of inspirational, even if you dont care about sports:

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

yesterday, I drank a cocktail of vodka, orange juice, and sriracha hot sauce. I could tell that if you get the balance just right, this drink is amazing... sweet and spicy.
But no, I just ended up with a drink that made my lips and tongue hurt.

today: setting up for radio station event, cleaning apartment, buying some new #####.

sriracha is the world's most amazing condiment. I could add it everything and anything, but i had never heard of someone mixing it in a drink.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Gertrude Baines, the world's oldest known person who once quipped she had won the genetic lottery, died Friday at a nursing home. She was 115.

yeah, I would not have thought of putting it in a drink either.

the tip I have, that I guess is the tip for mixing anything with alcohol, is to start out by putting in just a little bit, and then add to taste.

i am really bad at cooking/mixing things because I always think "just a little bit more..."

That's a textbook example of taking a thing too far.  Vodka and oj have been great together since basically vodka and orange juice were invented.  It's never needed anything else save possibly some ice cubes.

yeah, vodka and orange juice are pretty great together.
but the hot sauce... it just adds this little extra.

also, and more importantly: yesterday I found out that the guy who sits out on his front porch all the time, who I wave to and say "hi," sits out there so that people will come up and give him money.
they will drive up, and give him money, and he will give them crack cocaine.
