Well, I guess we could write them all off as a bunch of Jesus-sterno addled hypocrites...

Or we could just suppose they were humans having a bad day...

But I'll take middle route and say that for some what they believe and want to become was overwhelmed for a bit by the mundane annoyances of modern life and some poor grocery clerk got the bile of their slippage. But hey, they're working on it, even if their application is uneven.

And I'll guarantee that just as much as I'll certify that it's a lead pipe cinch that some of them were big old wallowing hippo-crites that get a good feeling from associating themselves with something "good" but don't really care to practice it.

Bunch of humans, a mixed bag of nuts.

But funny in retrospect from the clerks perspective.

It's almost like your channeling David Foster Wallace.

Well, I guess you do write like him.

Interesting piece on DFW from The New Yorker.

Full disclosure: I haven't read the entire thing, though I enjoyed reading most of it. Most of my online reading is done at work, and lately we've been busy. I've actually had to work!

Fuller disclosure: I haven't read more than one page of his fiction.

Fullest disclosure: I haven't even really started a single page of his fiction. He's such a fantastic essayist, why bother with it?

But you can't take your frustration out on the frantic lady working the register, who is overworked at a job whose daily tedium and meaninglessness surpasses the imagination of any of us here at a prestigious college.

On the one hand, I think that it has taught me a lot to work a pretty meaningless, stupid job. It has given me a lot of perspective on how the "other half" (or other 98%) lives.

On the other hand, there is a certain arrogance in thinking "this person has a miniumum wage job that seems boring, therefore their life must be endless tedium that makes them want to die, because having never done that job, it seems horrible, and my life as an educated person must be so much better than theirs is, they must envy me."
I don't think low-wage workers have a monopoly on tedious, meaningless work. Most of my co-workers do not seem like their souls have been crushed.

At this point my main problem with my job is that it makes me bored. And that I have to work random hours instead of the same hours every day/week.

I do spend a lot of time thinking about liberal arts stuff, though. the protestant work ethic, consumer capitalism, etc. that makes me less bored.

The reason those rude evangelical ladies stood out to me is that I have been really impressed with how polite and friendly most of my customers have been.

I'm terrified, looking forward, for the week or so after Thanksgiving when the Christmas music starts playing. One customer, after we joked about the bad muzak they play in my store, said "I actually complained to the manager about the Christmas music last year. I think making you guys listen to the chipmunks Christmas song all day is cruel and unusual."

I've only read DFW's fiction. I feel like this is saying I've only seen the SW prequels or the odd-numbered Star Trek movies.

In this traffic, all these vehicles stopped and idling in my way, it's not impossible that some of these people in SUV's have been in horrible auto accidents in the past, and now find driving so terrifying that their therapist has all but ordered them to get a huge, heavy SUV so they can feel safe enough to drive. Or that the Hummer that just cut me off is maybe being driven by a father whose little child is hurt or sick in the seat next to him, and he's trying to get this kid to the hospital, and he's in a bigger, more legitimate hurry than I am: it is actually I who am in HIS way.

I think I have a disease where I do this too much sometimes. It is not always the best thing to make excuses for other people.

I'm terrified, looking forward, for the week or so after Thanksgiving when the Christmas music starts playing.

Oh, this is the worst, and our Christmas music isn't even too bad, I don't think we usually had the Chipmunks. I wish you hadn't reminded me, now I am going to waste a lot of time wondering if I should nag my agent to read the other manuscript and sent her and daydreaming about her selling it for an insane amount of money that would justify my quitting my already extremely minimal day job, just so I don't have to hear the Christmas music.

Seriously, I do not understand the whole concept of background music in stores. The outdoor shopping plaza sort of place that we are in - they play music  - I mean, OUTDOORS. And it's really LOUD.  I can't even drown it out with my own player with earphones in my ears. I don't understand, when everyone has a device to play their own music, why anyone thinks it is a good idea to subject customers to some corporation's taste in music. OUTDOORS. I just don't get it.

And sometimes, they don't even turn it off when there is a live musician playing at a street event. Don't get me started.

Oh my  God.

That is the one Christmas song I like. I have a soft spot for "songs that tell a basic story and I only listen to like once a year." See also: Poe - Hey Pretty and King Missal - Detachable c*ck.

Actually, to be fair, the first time I hear "Christmas Wrapping" it is totally fine. I don't care for it but it is fine.

The 500th time, however.

Perhaps it will be different in exile.

Thinking back, it wasn't nearly as overplayed on the Utica and Albany stations as it was in LA.

This.  I'm a pretty easygoing guy, and this actually gets me steamed when it happens.  I'm half-deaf as it is, so the efforts of the musician are swamped in a sea of irritating white noise.  I'll usually drop more than the average into their guitar/sax/hurdy-gurdy case and shout, "I bet you'd sound great without the Muzak chorus."

There are a number of Christmas songs that make me want to smash the skull of baby Jesus with a dewey wooden plank.  Jingle Bell Rock, The Waitresses Christmas Carol, Grandma GROBAR, to name the three biggest offenders.
