As a dabbler in many things, I appreciate that there are people who are the right kind of nerdy and obsessed to keep antiquated technologies (and musical styles) alive. For people who devote entire web sites to wristwatches that have appeared in movies. For people who spend their free time making mashups of Transformers with Thomas the Tank Engine. For trainspotters. For Renaissance Fairers.

I don't have the time or interest to study all these things firsthand myself, but as someone who truly enjoys learning new things just for the sake of knowing them, I enjoy reading the fruits of others' labor. I like knowing that, if I ever want to get interested in out-of-print music that is only available on vinyl, I can go to my local record shop and find someone who can show me how to set up a turntable. I like that, when I walk into a comic book shop looking for the latest "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" book, the guy behind the counter will give me a once-over and suggest that I might also enjoy "Fables." No supercomputer will ever approach the wealth of knowledge and experience that the human race collectively represents.

So thank heaven for all the people in the world with a touch of Asperger's, because their single-minded obsessions with obscure topics makes the internet -- and indeed, life -- that much more interesting and useful.

Back in '87 I worked with a guy who was also both a cab driver and a DJ. He invited me to drop by his shitty little am oldies station. He showed me a room there that contained an fm station. It was about the size of a closet and just had a tower that handled the music. No employees - at least none on site. I was disappointed.

Yesterday I visited a friend who lives maybe twenty blocks away - first time at his house - and he told me instead of wiring his house for sound he's got a little broadcast setup in his basement, so he can just turn the radio on wherever and listen to his music. That never occurred to me, even though I have the little radio doohickey in my car. He says his will reach my house. Of course, he says that about his Marshall stack, too.

Hey, my name's on this thing. I guess it isn't a resume-booster until it is actually published somewhere.

Also, I hope no one reads it and realizes it is pretty boring and silly.

Today I'm going to run a 10km fun run that's raising money for youth suicide.

Can you afford 200 dollar nikes youth suicide, can you?

How much is that in real dollars?

We are on opposite sides of that tilt. I don't need any Boston fans ever celebrating a championship again.

Can'd. So hard.

in other news, I might be fired from my job.

I mean, probably not? I thought today was my day off, and it wasn't. The official rule is that if you skip a day of work with no explanation, you are fired.

Hmm.

That would be US 210 bucks and 35 cents at the moment.

Well that backfired. In my defense, I had a fair amount to drink last night. I got the reference but forgot Ray actually said $200 and was thinking there's no way you spent that much on a pair of running shoes. Also forgot that the US and Australian dollar are pretty close in value anyway.

. . . make my first blog post, riffing on something I wrote about here. Eh, read it - would it kill you? It's only like 140 words.

Yeah, but we had to listen to all those videos.

I've never liked Nine Inch Nails and those videos didn't change my opinion.

Isn't "I thought it was my day off" an explanation?

This is not about you, it's about me: Apparently I am never satisfied. All my life I've skimmed music criticism in places like the New Yorker and thought to myself "this is so pointless when I can't hear the actual music." But it turns out that I don't want to watch videos in the middle of reading an article either.

I'll have to think about this.
