I'm all for mature music made by people who are good at it. There are certainly bands who have "matured" and gotten way better.

Yesterday I went to watch the US vs Jamaica. After that was Panama vs El Salvador. Several times the El Salvadoran fans were chanting USA louder than we were. It was kind of weird but cool. We chanted El Salvador back at them. Their fans had a brass section. They are serious. Sucks that they lost due to a dubious goal

Me too and I agree with you.  Generally speaking though, most bands put out their best music early in their careers.

I think about this a lot:
your first album, as a band, is the fruit of all those years playing guitar in your bedroom, all those shitty shows you played that no one came to, all the experiences you had in your life up until that point, and all of the songs you wrote up until that point.
Your second album is just the 12 months or so since the last album, plus the baggage of reviewers expecting your sound to progress somehow.

We've all thought that at various times.

Today I am going to find out that the hammer throw record was set on my 18th birthday and has stood since then. Also, mom's not doing so hot. Hopefully she will hang out until I can get my wife up here in a month.

Y'know, I've heard that thing Inev said all about but it always made me wonder...what kind of sissy-fuck life are you living if it can be distilled down to just one album?

This is what separates the men/women from the boys/girls artistically, right? It's whether you've only got one album/book/whatever in you, or you can sustain a career for your whole life.

I am a big proponent of experience, but really, what it comes down to is what you can make of it. Some people seem to have a lot of material happen to them (Smells is one who comes to mind). But on the other hand, Emily Dickinson basically never left the house, right?

On the other hand, there are also bands that make several mediocre albums before finding their voice and start making really great music.  Radiohead is an example.  First album, Pablo Honey, pretty good.  Second Album, The Bends, fuck*ng great.  Third Album, Ok Computer, best album of the 90s.

It's just like a lot of people say to comic book creators or novelists or screenwriters when they're afraid to submit their work on spec because they're afraid their "genius" idea might be stolen...

If all you got is one good idea, the creative field is probably not for you. Ain't no new ideas anyway, there's probably fifty people developing more or less the same idea. Your ability to generate compelling commercial art should be a continous talent that you've developed over years of practice and learning, you know? If one of your ideas are stolen but it gets your foot in the door to ply your talents, that puts you ahead of 99.999% of people who wanna be commercial artists and/or craftspeople.

If you're any good, you should be able to pull fifty songs outta your hat, not just have twelve that it took you twenty-five years to come up with. Everyone has ideas. People without the ability to execute ideas sometimes have great ones that go fallow. What one is judged upon is the ability to follow through on the execution of any number of ideas, good or bad, with your personal style and skills and talents and whatnot.

I think. I ain't been paid shit for nothing because I am afraid I am completely untalented. About all I can say for myself that it isn't because I belong to the false cult of the muse.

Hm. Enough had happened to Mick and Keith, for example, for them to write "Paint it, Black", "Satisfaction", "Play With Fire", "Mother's Little Helper", "19th Nervous Breakdown", "The Last Time" and "Get Off My Cloud" amongst other snappy tunes. Of course, they were born during WWII, which was pretty significant - but you've got the Gulf Wars to draw from . . . maybe you shouldn't limit yourself to just things that happened in the last year.

What LFM said. But I don't care if someone only has one good album/book/whatever in them. Please, put it out there, and if that's all you got, get a better day job or something. Or go to law school.

also relevant: in the case of Jeff the Brotherhood, they are very very good at what they do. I'm sure they could make 10000 albums of really catchy rock riffs with silly lyrics over them. The problem is that on this new album they try to get "deeper," a thing they do not seem to have practice doing. I'm sure I wouldn't want to hear Jimmy Page's rock lyrics, but that doesn't mean he isn't an incredible musician.
