I just looked at Users Online, and I think it's the first time I haven't seen a single guest viewing this thread. Weird.

I'm tired of hearing about what you don't have. Get your bitch ass to work and drink a can of shut the fuck up. You're always going to be missing out on something. Get used to the gnawing pit in the center of you and march the hell on.

Next: more beer.

Who the hell are you talking to, Papaw?

Actually, that salt water probably do your ass some good, though probably not in the short term.

Have a lunch meeting at a Thai place for lunch.  Yesterday I had a lunch meeting at a Dim Sum place.  I am eating way too well these days.

Today's adventure in parenting:

The youngest found a small lizard floating in the pool and got up a ruckus. I giraffeed it out and told him it had drowned but since he was wearing his gardening gloves I let him check it out. He got a little attached, and by dinner time I had figured out his plot; if it was alive he figured I'd let him keep it as a pet. So, that plan led to about half an hour of him hoping it really was alive with me telling him (as soft as I could) that it was a dead as a plank, and that means it ain't coming back. So of course we had some crying and tears and after a few hugs and back pats we came around to getting a shovel and having a burial in the garden.

Then we watched Mythbusters and had a talk about how if the lizards brother came around to be caught that maybe we could pull out an aquarium for his room and keep that guy around.

It is a damn fine line to walk sometimes, my miggroids, to be honest without being harsh, which isn't exactly my natural element.

Sounds like you did a good job. I think that talking about death & dying on an age-appropriate level with kids when they're young makes it easier for the child to have a handle on when they get older. Pretending it didn't happen ("we sold your old dog to a farmer where he'll have more room to run around, he'll be happier this way") is pretty much a recipe for a lifetime of pain.

A little loss and grief is good for a kid, honestly. I was six when my great-uncle died, it was the year after Mr. Hooper died on Sesame Street, so my folks bought me a Little Golden Book called I'll Miss You, Mr. Hooper and had a good long talk with me before the funeral. They took me to the funeral home for the wake and they even let me see him in the coffin and say goodbye. They tied it in nice with our religious beliefs and said that it's OK to be sad that he's gone but he's not sad and he's not in any pain. I came away feeling like I wished he were still around but it seemed like not a bad deal for him.

My point is, Ash, I think you're a good dad, and when your tyke is in his thirties, he'll look back to the way you handled stuff today when he needs a model for how to handle it with his own kid.

Thanks.

I had to switch gears today on the oldest boy. I asked him to drop by the RV and hook up the battery charger this morning so I could pick it up after work and prep it for an all day giraffeing thing Sunday.

Of course, he called me at 12:30 to let me know it was done instead of, like 8:30. So, we hauled out there after work and of course the battery was still a little too flat. So I explained to him (again, we already covered this with another project) that this kind of thing needs to start early. Whatever he was doing from 8 to 12 could've waited until 9 to 1, y'know. Then I let him in on the impact, being me having to deal with it tomorrow on my limited 48 hours of weekend and the vast disappointment of his brother in the back seat.

No yelling or nasty talk, just letting him know (again) why you should do things like this early in the day and an explanation of how it bones the people depending on you when you cack it up.

Responsibility! (pass it on)

Yeah.  I was raised on transactional analysis, and once you get past a certain age you definitely strive to interact on an Adult - Adult basis.  It's really hard to keep from slipping back to Parent - Child.  It inevitably happens sometimes, but I try hard to avoid it.  Still, I think no matter what you do it tends to get perceived as Parent - Child nagging.  Something about interacting with your parents that make that sort of stance almost hard-wired.

Still, it's very rewarding and satisfying when you can relate with your children (or your parents) on that level.

I like the idea that perhaps they run the boat themselves, without human assistance.

Canned for adorableness.
