I own a slurpee machine but lack non-diet soda (needed for the slurpee machine). Sure I could go buy non-diet soda, but then I'm already in 7-11 where slurpees require no labor.

I think if you have one of these in your home you are required to add alcohol to the mix.

I'm about to go to a party where a Margaritaville machine is hard at work.  Sadly I should not imbibe.

Is this precautionary "shouldn't," or "shouldn't-with-some-certainty?"

I guess my boss heard me saying "working at 6am wouldn't be so bad if it were more consistent" and decided to make me work at 6 am all the time. OOPS.

A precautionary "shouldn't" when it comes to baby making or a definite "shouldn't" in that I will be driving on the highway for a couple hours in the dark after we set off the fireworks.

Today I'm gonna find out that I can't post to this board from my phone.

I called the power company and they gave a restoration time of 12 PM today, but I am sure they are lying. Someone on line told a story of getting a restoration time and when it passed without power, she called and was told "oh we never said that."

We never said that.  What do you know?  You have no power.

Today I'm going to eat Korean ribs and a bowl of cherries.  Sometimes there is something hard and inedible in the middle of something delicious.  But it is so worth the effort.

Continuing saga: A couple hours later they said restoration and noon on July 4th. That afternoon, they started putting calls right through to humans instead of a computer and the human said they had NO restoration times and he had no idea why the automated system had told me otherwise. I reamed him out for a while till a customer came and I had to hang up on him. Then a couple hours later I called and another human told me 11 pm Friday and made up a story that maybe someone had come out to look and it was worse than they thought, which I know is bullshit, because 11 pm Friday was the time they orginally uploaded as the restoration for all the outages on the map. She also claimed she had no idea why the previous guy said there were no times. I reamed her out for a while as well.

I decided that the first guy is actually secretly being subversive and admitting that the company doesn't have a fuck*ng clue what they are doing.

...be outraged about my kid's bus routes. They have cut five busses from his school alone and doubled the number of stops on his route (while the other half of the stops from the other four busses that were cut were distributed fairly evenly across the other eight routes). Not only that, the stops they added are all the way across town, and -- this is the kicker -- they're going to be picking up the kids who live closest to the school FIRST, driving them all the way to the north end and then back to the school.

We live literally as close to the school as it is possible to live -- there are no other residential neighborhoods between us and the school. (The school is in the middle of a commercial district and adjacent to a mall). It takes us five to seven minutes to drive him. With the new bus schedule, he will be on the bus for well over an hour each way. No problem, we just switch to carpool, right? NO. They ALSO changed the bell schedule for this school by 45 minutes, so his departure time is exactly the same as my daughter's departure time at her (public elementary) school, which is across town, at least 15 minutes away from my son's school (and my house).

I can't be at both schools at the same time, and since my daughter (as a special ed preschool student) has special transportation services, her commute home is only 15-20 minutes by bus. It can easily take fifteen minutes just to get to the front of the carpool line at my son's school, and that's if you're there WELL before the bell rings. (It's a very large school and literally hundreds of children go home through carpool every afternoon.) So if I want to pick up my son so that he doesn't have to ride the bus for over an hour (which would put his arrival time around QUARTER TO FIVE, and would require us to reschedule almost all his after-school therapy sessions), I would run a definite risk of not being there when my daughter's bus arrives.

If they had left the bell schedule alone, I could have picked up my son first, then driven over and picked up my daughter. If they had left the bus routes alone, I could have let them both ride the bus home. But since I can't be in two places at once, I have no idea how I'm going to manage to make sure both my kids are home at a reasonable time after school.

And this doesn't even include the morning bus routes -- we've already decided that I'll be dropping him off in the morning. He would have to get on the bus at 7:40 to arrive at school by 9:00. If he then has to ride the bus home, he'd be out of the house from 7:40am - 4:45pm. My husband, on the other hand, leaves for work at 8 and gets home at 5:15.

I'm outraged. They sprung the bell schedule change on us and now they're springing the bus routes at the last minute. (The changes take effect on Monday.) Fortunately I have about six weeks between the time my son starts back and my daughter's first day in the fall (since he is on year-round and she is on a traditional calendar, which can't be helped until she starts Kindergarten in 2013).

But unfortunately, I can probably yell until I'm blue in the face and nothing will be done. The only other option I can see is to talk to my daughter's teacher about picking her up fifteen minutes early every day so that I can make it to my son's school before the dismissal bell rings. But that's not great, either.

Just one more year, and then -- the good Lord willing & the creek don't rise -- they will be at the same school & on the same year-round schedule. Kids who have older siblings at a "choice" school like my son's are supposed to have priority assignment for that school.

And if the assignment office fucks that up for me, I swear up to heaven and down to hell that I will have somebody's testicles on a silver fuck*ng platter.

Recently I told someone I was going to boil their testicles and then force-feed them the resultant tea. I was pretty proud of that one, even though it was a joke.

JL, I'm sorry that you have to deal with this junk. It shouldn't be so hard to get your kids to school. How do families where both parents work full-time deal with this shit? Yours are lucky they have a bad-ass mom.

Lately I am a Bad Liberal (TM) because I am wondering how much better our city's bus service would be if the bus drivers were not unionized and they could afford more drivers and therefore more routes.

JL, that is some bullshit scheduling garbage.  It's the most mundane sort of stuff that really throws a wrench in things when it comes to life.  The only suggestion  you didn't cover - it sounds like the school has some sort of weird school-organized car pool thing, but is there any chance you can sniff out a couple rogue parents who are in a similar bind to do a private car pool with?

Urrgh, yeah, re: the "carpool" terminology -- that is what schools around here call the line to pick up your kid, whether you are picking up more than one or not. It is not really "carpool," in the traditional sense, but that's the terminology they use 'round here so I've gotten in the habit of using it that way too.

There is a small chance that I could coordinate with another mom in the neighborhood on *actual* carpooling, but it would basically mean that I would have to do all the mornings and she would have to do all the afternoons -- and on top of it, she would have to probably take Danger Boy to her house until I could pick him up after getting Chaos Girl. Which seems like a lot to ask for on a daily basis. But I'm looking into it.

Going camping in 100 degree heat sounds a lot less appealing than sleeping all day tomorrow. This better be pretty damn fun and involve a lot of beer.
