worst radio station ever

The FCC granted the call letters KUNT to a new radio station in Hawaii.
Also granted to the same company:  KWTF for a station in Arizona.

Funny how the FCC gets all jacked up whenever someone says "Fuck" on the air, but they were apparently OK with a station saying "K-U-N-T" over and over again all day.  Back in high school we joked that we were going to start a radio station "WFUK, Fuck 105"; wonder if those letters are actually out there somewhere.

I'm pretty sure an NPR affiliate somewhere in NC is called "WFAG."

Here in Massamachussettettettss, we have WROR.

Seems, innocent enough, right?

Well, the infamous New England accent makes "R" sound like "AHHH" (amount of h's on the ah appears to be a regional dialect sort of thing). A few of their DJs have the accent, some don't.

WROR in the NE accent sounds like double-u-ahhhhh-oh-ahhhhh. Some of the really bad accents make it sound like they're just saying "wahhhhhhhh-oh-ahhhhhhhh" like some sort of bizzare crying/sobbing sound.

Obviously the person who owns and named this radio station must have been aware of this, so I wonder why they chose those call letters to this day. The DJs with the accent sound ridiculous saying them (to me, who has no such accent).

It's not quite KUNT, but it came to mind.

apparently the name of our radio station ("K-W-U-R Clayton, 90.3-- that's K-WUR, St Louis Underground Radio") is a slangish way to write "queer."

so, there's that.

We used to have a WGAY.  The building was a few blocks from me.  Alas, no more.

I remember that. It was like super easy listening. The kind of stuff that the DJs was WASH would hear and go, "no, that's too mellow and boring." Their ads were a great source of amusement back in 7th grade.

Growing up, we had WIOT, the classic rock station.  (Except I guess it wasn't classic then?)  I suppose the call numbers were supposed to invoke an image of a rock 'n' roll riot, but always made me think of Elmer Fudd.  The mascot was some Wile E. Coyote looking cartoon character, which didn't help the Looney Tunes association.

We also had WVKS, KISS 92.5.  It was the pop station, which provided me with my first tastes of your GnRs, your Bon Jovis, and assorted other big hair type bands.  I had a 92.5 sticker on my hot pink boom box.  They actually picked up the phone when you called to make a request.  The sweet sounds of Madonna and Fleetwood Mac lulled me to sleep at night.  High school girls would dedicate Bangles songs to their boyfriends on Love Notes, weeknights at nine.  Where did you go, non-syndicated commercial radio?

Now, in another time and place, we just have boring station names.  WRDU, for instance.  Really? RDU?  The best you can do is to name your station after the airport?

I'm just bitter because WRDU switched from classic rock to country when Clearchannel bought their competitor.  Now I'm stuck with WBBB, which is such a ridiculous callsign they don't even use it on the air.  It's just 96 rawk!  The music is good but the DJs are all idiots.

We had awesome radio stations in Hampton Roads - a rock station, a classic rock station, an alternative rock station, a Jack FM style station (called Bob), and two easier-listening stations that were still decent enough that you could put them on at work and not want to rip your eardrums out.

Charlotte doesn't seem to do so well. Inev, maybe you can suggest something, but we've found one rock station and one work-listening station. And the rock station is owned by Clear Channel, which apparently means "we play what we've decided are the 12 best songs out there right now, over and over and over again." I can't wait to afford XM or Sirius.
