Growing up, we had WIOT, the classic rock station. (Except I guess it wasn't classic then?) I suppose the call numbers were supposed to invoke an image of a rock 'n' roll riot, but always made me think of Elmer Fudd. The mascot was some Wile E. Coyote looking cartoon character, which didn't help the Looney Tunes association.
We also had WVKS, KISS 92.5. It was the pop station, which provided me with my first tastes of your GnRs, your Bon Jovis, and assorted other big hair type bands. I had a 92.5 sticker on my hot pink boom box. They actually picked up the phone when you called to make a request. The sweet sounds of Madonna and Fleetwood Mac lulled me to sleep at night. High school girls would dedicate Bangles songs to their boyfriends on Love Notes, weeknights at nine. Where did you go, non-syndicated commercial radio?
Now, in another time and place, we just have boring station names. WRDU, for instance. Really? RDU? The best you can do is to name your station after the airport?
I'm just bitter because WRDU switched from classic rock to country when Clearchannel bought their competitor. Now I'm stuck with WBBB, which is such a ridiculous callsign they don't even use it on the air. It's just 96 rawk! The music is good but the DJs are all idiots.
