I'm still getting used to the fact that I have more than three radio stations at my disposal. Where I lived before, there was the Christian radio station, the local low-power AM station, and then the FM NPR station that we piped in somehow from Anchorage.

Basically, the commercials really, REALLY piss me off so I don't even bother listening to the radio anymore. I want to get satellite radio.

WARNING: Satellite radio has commercials too. At least, the kind we get at work does.  It's like cable TV - you actually get to pay for the privilege of listening to commercials. What will they think of next?

golfhaus--

90.3-- sometimes you can pick it up, they play old motown and stuff. it's a really weak signal, though. I first heard it because 90.3 is the frequency for KWUR, and I wanted to hear if there was anything on that frequency here.
88.9-- jazz
89.9--classical
95.7--the best classic rock station
99.7--um, they play metallica and stuff, but say that they are classic rock. I play a game with my brother where we try to guess what the stations will sound like-- 95.7 is typically "The Doors!" or "The Rolling Stones!" 99.7 is "Boston!" or "Kansas!" or somesuch. 90.3 is "some cute 60's song with low fidelity that we haven't heard!"
106.5-- horrible alternative rock station that I listen to when I hear something good scanning through (once a month or so)
107.9-- my parents like this station? too many talk shows.
90.7-- WFAE, NPR affiliate.
103.1-- my iPod-- you probably won't be able to pick it up unless you are in my car. I listen to this one the most, except for maybe 90.7. Sometimes there is some real station playing here and I get, like *jangly indie pop for 5 seconds* *BOOM, BOOM PSH, BABY I LOVE YOU SO! BOOM, BOOM PSH* *jangly indie pop again* *static* *BOOM, BOOM PSH* etc.

106.5 is what we listen to... from your list, it seems that if you want modern rock, that's the best we've got going. Shame. The radio and the traffic are the only things I've found about CLT that I don't care for.

What the fuuuuuuuck! Oh god. That's just terrible. Thanks for the heads-up.

I miss my little town with no stoplights and no advertising. Sigh.

Do you mean those annoying "informational plugs" from the "DJs"? I have XM and I find these interruptions even more annoying than regular commercials. But they only happen on a few channels.

I don't know if I could tell the difference between 'informational plugs' and 'commercials'....  You know, I don't listen to the music channels, so that might be different. I tried some things like comedy stations and other talk stations and they seemed to have commercials. So now I stick to the XM NPR station.  Which is kind of stupid, since I could get the same thing for free on air, but I don't pay for it so I don't care.

As far as the FCC is concerned (and I'm not sure how concerned they are about satellite radio), there are a couple of key differences between a commercial message and a non-commercial announcement.

This is an outline that is meant to draw distinctions between the two.  It's possible for a creative non-comm station to still say a lot about their underwriters and donors without crossing the line.

A local non-comm station has recently started playing 30-minute infomercial type things for a pain reliever, only it's presented like an interview and I'm not sure if it makes any call to action, gives value statements, etc (I stopped listening after a minute or two).  I'm sure it's legal or the management wouldn't risk their license by running it, but it definitely takes a gray area and murks it up even more.

The talk station here has a guy who is supposedly talking about current events and economics and investments, but really, all he does is sell gold and precious metals. I notice that when things are bad: Buy GOLD! When things are good: BUY GOLD! When things are uncertain: Buy GOLD!

It's almost funny.

Also, on the weekends there are these "Health" "talk shows" that appear to be selling bee pollen and other natural health products.
