Introducing..
« on: August 29, 2007, 10:21:32 am »

Hi. I'm Matt. I just registered after a few days of generally browsing around. You seem like generally okay people so I figured I should try conversing with you all. I'll try not being too much of a newbie. Speaking of which, why aren't there any? Mostly everyone here seems to have been here for ages. Do you eat the ones you don't like or something?

So about me: I'm 18 years old, Welsh, though I'm currently living (wasting away, more like) in Qatar, out in the Middle East. It's a very shite place to live, but I've got a job that pays me a lot for doing very little, so I shouldn't really complain. But I do. A lot. It sucks here.

Also, I want to delete my account. I signed up as emmdee, then realised it's actually quite a crappy moniker. Sorry for messing you around, internet, but I want to be mavies! Should I be a man and suck it up, or is there any way i can switch to my new, slightly girly name without using a different email address?

So, yes. hello!

Edit: Oh, sorry. There is another (almost) newcomer. Sorry for trying to steal your thunder, goomba! and any others I've missed.

Hi emmdee/mavies. I've never been to Qatar, so it would be pretty cool to see photos, if you have any. Also, you read some of the archives as evidenced by your chip butty posts, which puts you leagues ahead of most of the newbs that have joined in the past.

Welcome.

So the, "cutter"? "Gutter"? "That country, the Q one. No Quebec's a province, not a country. In the Middle East"?

Welcome.

PM Jough about the name change.  He will probably be more amenable to it if you hit up the tip jar.  Failing that, however, we'll just call you mavies even though your official name is different.  It's what we did for Bozack all those years ago, since his username was a decidedly un-memorable series of mostly numbers.

Honestly, around here we recognize each other by avatar.

And yes, we eat newbies.  For breakfast.

Newbies cereal is an important part of this complete breakfast.

That's quite all right.  Now they can stop eating me and focus on you instead.

Word of advice: Don't talk about linguistics.

P.S. It's actually "gloomba," as in a goomba that is sad.

no, no, talk about linguistics all you want!

*pronounces the Q in Qatar very loudly and very deep in his throat*

Welcome! A lot of newbies leave because we are pretty strange, and tend to not put up with jerks. When we were younger, maybe, but not so much now-- maybe they change, maybe we change!

Kwuttar, kattar, I aint really sure how to say it myself. I usually just refer to it as "the desert".

Linnea, here you go: http://picasaweb.google.com/mattdavies/. Some pictures, complete with insanely witty title. They're all out of the city though. I've been meaning to get some of it, but at the moment it's painfully hot outside. Considering I hate the heat I'm living in just the place for it, it's pushing 50 degrees here some days. You're lucky not having been here, it's appallingly crap. At least for any length of time longer than, say, half a day. But if mind-numbing tediousness, horrible climate and mostly awful people is your idea of a good time, you'll love it.

Gloomba, that is awesome. Gloomba! Colour me impressed. I couldn't really talk about linguistics even if I wanted to though, as I'm fairly clueless about it. I could try, but i'd just offend you intellectual types with my ignorance. Linguinorance?

I'll just stick to plain Matt, then.. Mavies is all fine and dandy 'til I forget thats what I've called myself and stop answering to it. I get confused enough when people call me Matthew. I'd still tip if I had a paypal account. Or even a credit card at all.

You wouldn't want to eat me, there's practically nothing there to eat. Be lucky to get a mouthful before you were chewing bone. Plus, all them chip butties've probably made me all bland and starchy. Milk'd be no good, try some gravy maybe?

I shall not be a jerk! At least, not intentionally. And not unless you're also a jerk. I think i can put up with a little strange if you can put up with a little jerk?

(And Doc, no worries. My (other) bone is my own business. I'd charge you for pictures, or at least make you take me out for dinner first)

I like this one.

Agreed.

Matt, is that you cuddling that giraffe?  Also, what about they lack of eyebrows?  I imagine cruel joke, drunken bet or illness?  I hope it's one of the first two.

Hey since you're from Wales, and Beef's girl Molly is from Wales, what is your take on how Onstad writes her?

I think that's the first time anyone's ever referred to the giant line of fur above my eyes as a lack of eyebrows. They're actually quite massive, bordering on a unibrow. Maybe you're looking at the bald guy in the other album? That's steve, and it's illness. alopecia. Poor guy used to have flowing locks back in the day. It still grows, but very patchily so he shaves it. I'm the hairy giraffe-cuddler. I found that thing in a shop out here and was physically unable to not buy it. A giant stuffed giraffe. I think, deep down, it's every mans dream to own such a thing.

Molly is lovely. I think that's pretty separate to her being Welsh though. I haven't noticed much.. Welshness(?) to her, really. I wish the girls I know back home were half as nice as her. But I don't have a crush on a cartoon cat, no siree..

I thank the Lord I'm not actually in Wales, if that counts. Lovely place, shame about the people. It aint that bad, really, I suppose. It's just I went back there for a holiday a few weeks ago, and left badly disillusioned. Being welsh is quite neat, though. Rich cultural heritage and all that. Also being able to pronounce the awesome place names. Llanelli? Caerdydd? Rhydycar? Hells yeah. Only problem is the constant nagging feeling that you're somehow getting shafted by the english.

I like this one too! This many?

Hey ass hole, look, Wales is a glorious nation so step down. If you can't pronounce the names or breathe the mother tongue, then leave. Plaid Cymru for life, MF.
