I completely agree. Socks are right out. Fellas, have the decency to take off your socks. It just looks incongruous. I ain't care if they let athletes wear leg warmers. After all, Pat and Rod wear their cop workboots with white socks and nothing else save the police hat. I should probably just Google this, but how on earth did "cop" become slang for a police officer?

C.O.P. could very well be some nifty government acronym for your friend's job title, but I think it's pretty well established that "cop" is not an acronym.

Almost every story that derives a normal English word from an acronym is a legend. There might be exceptions I am not thinking of but it should be your first assumption in the absence of very reliable evidence to the contrary.
