Country Music.
« on: October 30, 2007, 06:06:59 am »

So. I am realizing lately that I listen to entirely too much rock music. I am getting really into John Fahey. He is so great. So now I want to get into the stuff which he came out of-- old country, old folk blues, gospel, folk stuff... I am really enjoying it. I don't really have any way to get new music for free here at school, so could people maybe suggest some CDs or artists I could purchase? There are several used CD stores near enough to walk to, so.

So far, I have some Hank Williams, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, Carter Family, Son House, the Uncle Tupelo album "No Depression," and a comp of old folk blues my friend gave me a few years ago. I want to find some more stuff from one guy on there, Hayes McMullen, but I can't find any information about him at all. I have tried to get the Anthology of American Folk Music, but it is hell of expensive and not available at our library. I have a big list of artists that John Fahey mentioned in an essay about Bluegrass, but that is about it.
Any suggestions?

I don't think it matters.  I have a four disc set that covers his entire career from the beginning up to the early 80's and there's not a weak cut on it.

Also, Merle Haggard.

Maybe some Woodie Guthrie? Oh, also some Blind Willie Johnson and Skip James, can't forget those two.

Less country, more folksy: Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez (her cover of "Boots of Spanish Leather" is amazing)

It doesn't really matter, as long as the subject matter remains loves lost, alcohol drank, nd self-loathing. Country does self-loathing so much better than any kid who wears eyeliner. Seriously.

Great instrumentalists like Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Roy Clark or Ricky Skaggs.

Also, Marty Robbins is cool.

Re: Anthology of American Folk Music

There's a Folkways podcast that you can get on iTunes or here:
http://www.folkways.si.edu/learn_discover/folkways_collection.html
It's not like listening to albums because they're explaining the history as well as playing some songs. It's pretty cool, though.

Woody Guthrie's Library of Congress comp. is awesome.

I could put some stuff for you on like one of those share sites on the internet that aren't torrent sites if that is cool with your school.

Few people understand the beauty of old time folk and country. Its the sort of thing where i have to turn my headphones down when in an elevator around here.
'Ramblin Jack Elliot, Tex Williams, The Kingston Trio
Cant go wrong with Merle haggard (hes the only one here whos made a music video)

On of the biggest anti-USAish (it is hard to describe this guy, and that isn't really right, but he is definitely anti-Haggard's views) comes from Muscogee, or however you spell that shit hole.

More recommendations:  The Flatlanders.  This is a must.  Get "More a Legend than a Band."  Amazing Musical Saw.  Joe Ely- member of the Flatlanders, they are better than him, but he is still good alone.

John Prine- I don't know if this is exactly Country but I think it is.  Sings "Illegal Smile" but his career is so much better than this.  Other songs include a great one about a Vietnam vet who is a heroin addict, with lyrics Spiritualized stole ("Sam Stone") and "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore."  These are all on his self-titled.

Jerry Jeff Walker-  Don't know what the album I have is called, but it is live and amazing.  Sings "London Homesick Blues," the intro song to Austin City Limits.

Terry Allen- "Lubbock (On Everything)"-  He, like the rest of these recommendations (maybe not Prine, I don't know too much about him), represents the best parts of the plains, were I have spent my whole life.  See, there is a lot of empty space out here, and a lot of people that conform, but those who don't are usually the coolest people you can meet.  Good example of this would be the guy who made the Cadillac Ranch ( http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/TXAMAcadillac.html ).  My hippie looking friends(again, not a good description) and I were in a random wedding there on our way back from Santa Fe once.

Anybody wants any of this tell me and I will post it somewhere.

Edit: Also, anything Gram Parsons has ever done- especially The Byrds album he is on and solo stuff.  And The Band.

See, this really confuses me. In Charlotte, all of my friends hated this music, except a few kids who were into Rockabilly and Country as an extension of that.
Here... out of the 5 on-campus bands I know that aren't my band, 5 of them are acoustic-instrument based. Bluegrass, solo acoustic guitar, country/blues duo, weird primitive acoustic guitar/banjo thing... most of the student body probably hates it, though. Most of the student body in Charlotte loved (bad) country. So I guess that's the difference.

I will check out the things which y'all have recommended.
Except Chet Atkins. The first two tracks on his CD made me want to vomit from over-sweetened guitar. Mr Sandman? Oh man, no thanks.

AWESOME thread. I'm going to be checking out a lot more music. My suggestions are more alt-country, but here you go:

Lucinda Williams
Chris Knight
Every single Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt album ever made, plus any of Jay Farrar's side projects. In case you party people can't tell, I am a HUGE fan of Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt, also Jay Farrar. I love Jeff Tweedy too, but Jay Farrar has a special place in my heart.
Ryan Adams and the Cardinals (also just Ryan Adams solo).

David Allen Coe. I'm not sure why but I do like me some David Allen Coe. Second Dwight Yoakum, you can't go wrong.

Marty Stuart's good, too. He's as contemporary as I know of Country Music these days.
