« on: December 23, 2007, 07:20:07 pm »

Whats everyones plans for Christmas?

Tomorrow Im going over to my girlfriend's town to sing Christmas carols outside the town chapel around a Christmas tree. (Yea apparently that stuff still goes on in some places). Ill be giving her this diamond on a platinum band and hopefully receiving a toy helicopter. Christmas will be the normal fare of gifts here and at my aunt's for a filling dinner.

my parents surprised and disappointed us by telling us that none of our extended family would be coming this christmas, for the first time since... I was a tiny kid.
Then they surprised us again, by having our grandparents show up (they live in Chile). They normally come, so... it was kind of a confusing surprise.
I am going to give presents, receive presents, etc. My brother and I plan to play video games until late on christmas eve, to compensate for the fact that we are not sleeping in the same room (normally my aunt and uncle sleep in his room, and he sleeps in a sleeping bag on my floor.) He is growing into a man of few words and fewer expressed emotions, so I tried not to act like it was a big deal when he said that it was going to be sad sleeping in his own room on xmas eve.
I still need to shop for almost everyone on my list... up until today I've been freaking out about getting my mom a birthday present (her birthday was yesterday) because I feel like she never likes/enjoys what I get her. There are an awful lot of unread books on our shelves that were christmas/birthday presents to her, but she's just such a busy lady.

I do not know at all what our plans are for the night of... our normal traditions all revolve around all my little cousins being here, and wanting to decorate cookies for santa, &c. While they did that, we would play video games with our two uncles, or else I would talk to the younger uncle about how he grew up in LA in the 80s and consistently failed to go see bands I love, "all my friends were into those bands, but I just didn't like going to concerts. I did see The Clash, though." I am sad that I won't get to see his two little kids, one of whom I have never met as he is just a few months old. The other one was just starting to walk when I saw him last, and now is apparently really into talking about everything and asking questions about the world. People keep saying he reminds them of me when I was that age, which is nice to hear.

A-CAP's post is too good to follow up with anything about my boring holiday season.  The seasonal atmosphere, the charming detail of the toy helicopter, leaving us wondering if the ring means that he is proposing marriage... It's poetry.

Ill be giving her this diamond on a platinum band and hopefully receiving a toy helicopter. Christmas will be the normal fare of gifts here and at my aunt's for a filling dinner.

Wait are you getting engaged?  If so congrats!

The SO and I will wake up tomorrow and open our gifts to each other.  My SO will drive us out to his parent's farm house which is about 2 1/2 hrs away just outside of Miami, Manitoba.  We'll hang out with the SO's family and wonderful friends.  Also cute dogs and cats.  We will eat, drink and be merry. Christmas eve is booze, hor d'oeuvres and possibly board games.  We'll get to see one of the SO's bestfriends who he only gets to see once a year.  I will sleep on a horrible, uncomfortable bed, the SO may stay up all night with his friend, but not I.  I will lie in bed and get all misty eyed because his family is so kind and loving, and life is good.  I'll fall asleep feeling content and grateful.  I'll wake up when a cat climbs into bed, fall back asleep, wake up when another cat gets into bed, fall asleep, wake up if the SO comes to be, fall asleep, wakeup when the 100 pound dog gets into bed, fall asleep, wake up because someone's paw/elbow/nose is in my face, fall back asleep, etc.  We will awake, eat breakfast and drink mimosas and open way too many presents.  I'll enjoy watching everyone open their gifts from me.  More eating, more drinking, more visiting with good people, more presents.  Another night on the horrible bed, More eating.  A drive home, a basking in the mountain of gifts we've received.  Time spent figuring out where the hell all the new stuff should go, napping... then a week off, time spent with friends.

This will be my first peaceful Christmas.  It's odd to not anticipate any fighting or soul crushing criticism.  It's good, but odd.  I'm trying to get my head around Christmas not being a time of melancholy!  Wine helps with this.

Yeah... if that's a proposal ring, congrats.

But I dunno with arancho-capitalists, a platinum ring might just mean "thanks for dinner" to them.

I am trying to wrap my head around the idea that one day, I might spend the holidays drinking with my parents.

they aren't that big on drinking, though, so maybe that won't happen. the extent of their drinking is a glass of wine with dinner, or maybe my dad will have a beer if people are over watching a football game. hmm.

yay for melanie having a happy christmas!
yay for giving the cute Ruf*les girl a ring!

Yeah, holy shit! Congrats and I hope she says yes. That is awesome.

I will be getting up at 5AM on Christmas eve to take my sister to the airport. Then I'll be doing a whole lotta nothing. Maybe watch some television with the cats. I really wish I had more friends who live nearby.

On Christmas day my mom is going to come over, she'll get to see the grandkittens, and then we'll go downtown to my younger sister's place. I'm pretty excited, I don't get to see my mom that often or hang out with my younger sister that much. It will be fun.

Today I will wake up with two dollars and no food.  I would go to my parents but I said I would take care of my roommates dog.

Last night I got drunk and apparently thought it was a good idea to make two 15 egg omeletes with some friends, one of which works at the university restaurant making omelletes.  Unfortunetely, the ten eggs I threw in were basically the end of my food.

Tomorrow, I will go home late at night so my roommates dog is taken care of, open presents which I hope are few, give nothing to nobody and then come back and forth on Christmas day taking care of the dog.

Also, maybe set up my roommates dog's cage in my parents garage so I can go home today, and or stay home more over the next two days.  After that I am moving to my parents house (dec 28-29), which is one of the reasons I don't really care about being there too much now.

I have also been drunk as shit the last couple days with friends all passing out on my couch and whatnot.  Today, I will try to avoid that happening.  This is probably the last time in at least a year I will have a house to myself, and I plan to do it up right (and by that I mean not put on clothes.)  I may be able to find some change for a big bag of chips or something and just smoke and play punch out on my wii.  Does it make you bad if you probably still have a couple friends in town but that is what you want to do?

Most of our Christmas was done today. Mrs. Haus's parents, sisters, and their families came down for the weekend - the first in our new home. It went pretty well. I was impressed yet again by our nephew, who is about eight or nine years old. Last year, he insisted on getting my wife a cross to hang on the wall "because the last time we were there, I noticed she didn't have one." I'm agnostic, but their family is Catholic, and that's a pretty astute observation for a kid, methinks. This year, he was told about the fact that I didn't really like opening presents in front of people, so elected to focus on a gift for my wife instead. He's the only boy among four kids, the third youngest (and the youngest is an infant). And he was the most helpful in the kitchen last night, volunteering to help move plates and silverware while his older sisters seemed to be more about watching TV - enough to the point that at one point my wife let him off the hook for further helpfulness and recruited enslaved the other two.

I go to work tomorrow, one of only three people in an office of about twenty who will be. I was given the chance to take a comp day, but declined, since the truth is, we're going to be let go at like 1:00 anyway. Then I'm off until Thursday.

Our big Xmas present this year was that the school system finally agreed to recognize my wife's previous teaching experience out of state for purposes of pay - pay that will go retroactive to August. The next check will help us become a 2-car family again, instead of the 1.2 car family we have been for the last few weeks.

My Christmas was a great deal more stressful than I would have liked.  It didn't help that I'm fighting a cold and hardly slept Christmas Eve.  My wife and my mom don't get on altogether well, and I felt like I was moderating all day.

But the kids had a good time and got a ton of loot.
