One tiny can for being perhaps the only respondent to "get it".

Eh... I don't know. Especially in a group such as this, if one of six "get it," the problem may not be the audience's.

I wasn't around back then, but this must have been what it was like when Onstad used to post on dumbrella.

While it wasn't for me (not the biggest fan of Diesel Sweeties or the destruction of boobs), I think you're fine for posting something which you hoped others would like; I honestly didn't think this would be so far out of the taste range of people here.

Some of the reactions here are a bit strong, accusing Death Ray of misogyny? For reasons posted above I think that's a bit... well I hate to say it, as I'm going to be left open for accusations of being something unpalatable, a bit over-sensitive. 'Violence against women' isn't funny, I agree, I cannot think of an example where it is. But I don't think this is intended to induce laughter at the acided lady, just a dark-humour grimace. Achewood's done that plenty of times to me. It's parody anyway, nearly every web-comic parody of a light-hearted comic is turning it offensive, funny or not.

Death Ray and Side_show, sorry if I am conveying an intention you didn't intend or if I'm putting words in your collective mouth.

I wasn't around back then, but this must have been what it was like when Onstad used to post on dumbrella.

I don't understand the vitriol of criticism on the internet sometimes, surely it's only fair to extend the same courtesy as if you were talking to face-to-face to the author? I'm sure most people here, lovely as they all are, would be a bit less harsh in that circumstance.

I liked it.

I used to read DS daily.

I thought this was smirk-funny, and not offensive.

But what the hell do I know?

I hardly think this should be interpreted as a "violence against women" joke. More like "beware the kinky side of bastard #####s, because their poop is caustic" joke. If anything, it is a slam against exploitive men.

Quote from: side_show
Maybe it would mean something more to someone who reads your strip or DS, but for me this was "talking set of tits meets extremely violent end due to... aging?" and that sort of thing doesn't fly with me.  Violence against women is so far away from funny for me.

I didn't say it was a "violence against women joke."  The strip depicts violence against a women.  I don't care if it was a humanoid *****, a sock puppet, or a stick figure that did it.  It came out of your brain and hands, and you put it out there in the world.  I am not okay with that, and any chance that any other aspect of the strip could have been funny was destroyed by that for me.  I will never find something where the end result is a woman having her flesh eaten away to her bare bones during a sex act she was coerced into within the context of a light parody valid or anything but offensive to my sensibilities.  In the arts, and especially in comics,  I'm sick of the casual use of this sort of imagery without any introspection, and I'm especially sick of the weak defense that it's all in the interpretation.  As artists we are cultural leaders who effect how our audience sees the world. We have a responsibility, like it or not, to be aware of our audience and what we are saying to them.  The depiction of a woman being sexually coerced, and then meeting a horrible end because of it has been replicated over and over and over again in our culture, to the point where it can be said we live in a rape culture.  if we continue to thoughtlessly regurgitate these same images over and over we are complaisant partici##### in that culture.  It disturbs and horrifies me whenever images of sexual violence are dismissed, normalized, and or excused.  It's been reported that 1 in 3 women have been raped or sexually assaulted world wide.  It has beenestimated that in the US a woman is raped every 80 seconds.  We're talking about a serious epidemic, one that is detrimental to everyone's sense of wellness, safety and right to be safe and secure.  Think about the time it takes to read this strip - in that time a women in the United States has been raped.   Think about the women reading this strip, many of them have been raped or sexually assaulted.  Think about the men reading this strip, some of whom have previously sexually assaulted or raped a women, and there you are making a nice light parody, apparently, in your mind, only a poop joke.  Nice to know you put some thought into this.  Maybe next time use slave owner/slave relationship to deliver a fart joke.

I swear I had no intention of remotely triggering a rape when I read that strip. Shame on Death Ray (the father of modern rape?) for setting us up - and I think there's a strong case for indicting Onstad as an accessory here (obviously a mentor/pupil relationship).

Side_show, I think it's fair to assume we all share your concerns, but not your logic. If there's a nice way to say this I'm doing it now: Take a chill pill, sister.

Death Ray, your strip is not funny but then again so isn't Diesel Sweeties. I see you have a version of Charlie Brown, also, with muscles drawn in a style reminiscent of Jim Lee. Is your soul dead, Death Ray? Aristotle said that parodies bespeak for a lack of original creativity, and a bent for showing things "worse than they are" that cannot be healthy in the long run. And Mitch Hedberg, a sage from our age, used to get mad at turkeys because they keep trying to emulate other animals ("turkey pastrami, turkey baloney, turkey 'ham'") I will say this: The world is not made better by a version of Charlie Brown with Jim Lee muscles. "We already like you little brother. Quit trying to emulate the other animals. You got your own thing going".

I have always contended that parody is the sincerest form of parasitism, so you aren't going to catch me up there. As for Aristotle and Mitch Hedberg, well, let them post here if they want.

Meanwhile, plenty of people have told me that Weapon Brown makes them laugh their exhaust ports off, so I'm gonna have to side with them in this instance.

As for Madam Side__Show, I think you are reading a WHOLE LOT into my strip. Obviously rape is repulsive, but this is a joke about a) the compromises people make in a sexual relationship and b) the silliness of scat (especially robot scat).

Perhaps you see your own life as similar to the woman's in the strip, to which I say: Leave the jerk before he dumps anything else on your chest.

One tiny can for being perhaps the only respondent to "get it".

Because if someone doesn't like your work, the problem is clearly with them?

I get what you're going for, I just don't think you succeeded. There's a difference between not getting a joke and not thinking the joke is good or well-told.

Now Ben, Littlefalls can of Dr. Pepper does not diminish your accomplishments in any way. Can't you just be happy for him?

Sorry for pointing out the delightful self-deception that has comforted hundreds of hopefuls who go before the brick wall, microphone in hand, and are booed off the stage.

I'm sorry, honey, you were really very funny and they just didn't get it. I liked the one about how vitamins make your pee orange, you're still special to me.
